    Hi Pierre, this was great and thanks for sharing the job. The timing chain on my dad's 300SEL broke while we were on a family vacation some years ago. Our mechanic Duane, at the time drove all the way up from Chantilly Virginia to bring the chain and change in at the local shop in PA where we had spent the night. I have been following your channel since last night (7/23). Truly enjoying becoming more educated about all of these cars because I am in the market for another vehicle; just don't know which one yet. Leaning far towards a 560SL, but I would miss having a diesel engine --I have a '85 123 Estate Wagon. Question on the timing chain: In another video you mention the 380SL having a single row timing chain, whereas on the 560SL, I have an image on a cracked valve cover from a forum where the discussion thread was about 560SLs, and the owner complained about "ticking or knocking" sounds. He says it wasn't the timing chain, as it was stretched at 6 degrees. It had two chains (double). What did the cracked valve result from? Bent valves, or a broken guide? How can you stretch metal configured into a chain? Others say to always have the single timing chain converted to a double. Is double better due to the weight of the V8 engine? Thanks

    W108 250S. Have you ever converted a timing chain tensioner to a manual tensioner/adjuster? It would appear to me to not too difficult. Care would be needed when "feeling" the initial tension. Your thoughts please. Tony. Australia.

    I'm going to look at a 86 560SEC today. Is rolling the new chain by connecting it to the old one the only way to install the timing chain on these cars? Is there not a timing cover than can be removed on the front of the engine that will reveal the whole chain? Nice video!

  • @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753

    there is a timing cover, but removing it requires taking off the oil pn and both cylinder heads....we usually only pull the cover when the engine is coming out for major service!

  • @frazierfrazierr
    @frazierfrazierr5 жыл бұрын

    I can understand taking out the plugs, but why the rocker arms? Did this on my 380sl and removed neither. Just had a friend hold the old chain to keep it from falling into the engine. It was a bit spooky when the cam for cylinders 1-4 jumped, but I just kept releasable zip ties on the chain/cam to keep it from jumping. Easy peasy!

    Great video!! I wonder how this works the change of a timing chain on a 300sd do you have to adjust the injector pump? Or just sync the pump with the new chain? Also please very important to me do you recommend the use of liqui moly mos2 anti friction oil additive and the engine oil flush from liqui moly on a 300sd?

    it's a good idea. we use a timing indicator light - colloquially known as an AB light- to check pump timing. But due to the design of the chain path, they can't actually jump timing during a chain replacement.

    oh dear, no need to use the disc grinder to cut the chain off. I just use a sharpened screw driver between the side plate and a link ,pop the sideplate off the chain by giving it a whack with a small hammer . . A rag or two stops the side plate or link dropping into the engine .No need for a fancy chain tool or grinder feeding grit into a customers engine. Cam wear is caused by not changing oil occasionally ,the feed is from the rear of the block and is quite small . If the engine is getting 'tappety' it's time to look at the cam oiling. I never change just the chain because it is the left hand inner tensioner rail which fails, gets fed around the cam wheel and bang... no more left bank. The rails are dirt cheap and take minutes to change once the ancillary's are out of the way.

    Ok seriously. I was joking a year ago and honestly I can handle this job without you, but it's something that you should redo with 35,000 subscribers. This edit is horrific and you don't go into any of the tricky stuff like a making or buying a pin puller and the guide installation, let alone removing the rockers without damaging stuff. I was looking around trying to see what brand guides his kit includes. And no the cam spins half the speed of the motor. You were correct first.
