TimesTalks | Ricky Gervais | Full Interview

Ойын-сауық

Join us for a riotous evening with Ricky Gervais - the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning comedian, actor, director and writer. Gervais will be in conversation with Philip Galanes, who writes The New York Times’ hilarious weekly column “Social Q’s,” which answers reader questions about the sticky situations they face in every corner of modern life. The duo will discuss Gervais’ prolific and diverse career as well as his upcoming film “David Brent: Life on the Road” premiering on Netflix February 10th. The film is a mockumentary that follows Brent, who hasn’t given up his dream of becoming a rock star 12 years after the final episode of “The Office.” As he assembles a group of mercenary session musicians, a talented sidekick for street cred and an overpriced yet underwhelmed tour manager, he embarks upon a self-financed UK tour coming to a venue near every major city near you. Don’t miss Galanes grilling Gervais on returning to his rock star roots.
Filmed live at TheTimesCenter.

    I'm sure the interviewer isn't a bad guy, but have to agree with the others here in that he should allow the subject of the interview to BE the SUBJECT of the interview, not his own ego.

    17:50 Ha ha! I love this story! 21:05 The 11 O'Clock show 34:15 The Golden Globe discussion. Love it! P.S. I take issue with the many harsh critiques of the host. I think he does a reasonably good job and I gain some new insights from watching it. It is always easier to criticize than to create.

    Wow, did Biff Tanned travel back in time and completely erase Stephen Merchant? "I had David Brent fully formed [before I met Merchant]" and "Then I wrote the Office [all me and Merchant had nothing to do with it]." I get they've obviously had a falling out, but credit where it's due -- The Office wouldn't exist without him. Why are so many of you focussed in the interviewer, and not this glaring absurdity? The interviewee was fine -- had a lot of good insights, actually. Got Ricky to reappraise Brent as sad rather than sweet, and linked the Globes into Ricky's overall body of work in a way even Gervais felt was interesting. So you don't like his voice, so what? He got good answers and material from Ricky, and that's his job. The real sin here, and what I expected to find overflowing in the comments, is Merchant's wholesale erasure in a very deliberate way

    about 27.00 "The interviewer says what he loves the way he never blinks", not sure what he means? Is this an American saying or something, I'm assuming that blinks doesn't mean actually blinking.

    You serious? Blinking means exactly that. Blinking. The interviewer is weird, I'll give you that. Weird thing to say. I think he just likes the awkwardness of not blinking. (I myself don't recall David Brent not blinking.)

  • @Matthew-ve7uv

    @Matthew-ve7uv

    Ignore Jake -- "not blinking" means not flinching, never giving the game away. He's saying that bad I call you he can't believe how well Ricky inhabited the character; there were never any tells, no matter how absurd Brent got. (Or, at least, that is one use of the term "never blinking").

  • @michaels4897

    The interview doesn't get any better even three years later. The pretentiousness, the little notebook he holds, his looking into the camera while Ricky is responding to a question, the harping and ridicule of Ricky's music video from 1982, the almost incessant interruptions - I could go on and on. I honestly hope this was his last interview, not just for the viewers' sakes but for his sake as well. Just by looking at the aggregate of the comments, it's so sad that the interviewer completely overshadows that great Ricky Gervais.

    The host actually made some good points, like about the deluded self-importance of people like Jolie, and seems to genuinely appreciate Gervais. He isn't the jokey type of host that people are used to, but is not without humor. He is an educated, sophisticated gentleman and doesn't deserve to be derided as in the comments below, which is an easy thing to do. This is one of the better, serious but not boring - as with the young but prematurely aged hosts at the Oxford Union - interviews with Gervais, where he talked more candidly about himself than he had before.

    No wonder no one has seen this. Worse interviewer ever! Talk about a disconnect! His response to Ricky’s self revelation is “It’s interesting. The way social mobility worked...” blah bitty blah blah blah. His research supersedes his ability to hear what Gervais is talking about. Hopefully, like Ricky and the monkeys, he learns from this experience. After all it’s free for us but those people paid $40! Glad to watch RG in anything.
