TimesTalks | Ricky Gervais | Full Interview
Ойын-сауық
Join us for a riotous evening with Ricky Gervais - the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning comedian, actor, director and writer. Gervais will be in conversation with Philip Galanes, who writes The New York Times’ hilarious weekly column “Social Q’s,” which answers reader questions about the sticky situations they face in every corner of modern life. The duo will discuss Gervais’ prolific and diverse career as well as his upcoming film “David Brent: Life on the Road” premiering on Netflix February 10th. The film is a mockumentary that follows Brent, who hasn’t given up his dream of becoming a rock star 12 years after the final episode of “The Office.” As he assembles a group of mercenary session musicians, a talented sidekick for street cred and an overpriced yet underwhelmed tour manager, he embarks upon a self-financed UK tour coming to a venue near every major city near you. Don’t miss Galanes grilling Gervais on returning to his rock star roots.
Filmed live at TheTimesCenter.

It's so annoying when the interviewer loves the sound of his own voice

memo heap and he is sweating since Minute one
I love how the thumbnail has the host and not ricky. They are preparing us before we click it
Horrible interviewer, can't even get a proper sentence out, please just let him write articles and never speak publicly.
The host is shocking. cannot believe he's a journalist
Gervais is genius with a heart of compassionate gold. May he live long and create loads more to keep the world on its toes and belly ache laughing!🇿🇦🌹👌🏽

I'm sure the interviewer isn't a bad guy, but have to agree with the others here in that he should allow the subject of the interview to BE the SUBJECT of the interview, not his own ego.
Ricky Gervais is honestly a genius, his eye for emotional drama / comedy is just so utterly sublime.
Love rickys 80's video and song...he was great.
Ricky deserves a better interviewer, djeez. Thanks Ricky to do so much effort bc many wouln't ♥
Love the fact that one of the most emotional scenes in The Office was influenced by the great Cagney classic, Angels With Dirty Faces.
This would go a lot better if the parts where the host speaks could be speeded up by 50%. Pretty good tho.
What a terrible terrible interviewer.
Sounds like the interviewer may be heavily medicated lol
17:50 Ha ha! I love this story! 21:05 The 11 O'Clock show 34:15 The Golden Globe discussion. Love it! P.S. I take issue with the many harsh critiques of the host. I think he does a reasonably good job and I gain some new insights from watching it. It is always easier to criticize than to create.
16:30 Ricky held his laughter e.g. there and many other times quite well on that chat
Philip Galanes, just wow, how bad, how unprepared and how rude was he. I'll give him the benefit of doubt and put it down to nerves.
when did the host go off his meds
omg, Ricky was a heartthrob as a popstar, he looked amazing! how did they not become famous????

HE IS!♥ check his Twitter & do research, he made it u know :)
What a terrible host
Ricky does a fantastic job of keeping it rolling and speeding up the monogamous host. Poor people that paid to see this live

How do you know about the interviewer's relationship status?
One look at Mr Gervais's eyes at moments when he listens to the questions tells that he's in hell. So are the people who watch this. Whoever's in charge of putting this host in charge of this conversation, should be severely punished
I was super excited to watch a 45 minute Ricky interview. However, completely ruined by a self indulgent interviewer. We watched the interview to listen to Ricky, not the bleeding host
I like how he doesn't mention the 11 o'clock show was 11 o'clock on a Sunday morning! It was edgy for a Sunday morning, but so was the repeats of the football results.
I never thought I would never skip a Ricky gervais interview but skipping this one.. well done crappy host 👍
Did anyone else notice that the interviewer kind of acted like this was all about him?

really horrible indeed
25:19 True words Ricky!
this is the first Ricky gervais video I can't watch for more than a few minutes due to the fact he's being interviewed by the most grating host ever - who takes such a long time to say nothing at all.
seriously though, when is the Seona Dancing 180g Gatefold re-issue coming out?? I'd DJ the heck out of Bitter Hearts
The host !!
having read most of the comments, I feel sorry for the interviewer as he will have read all of this !
27:20 When you realise Ricky Gervais `Gets you`
If you hate the Interviewer search Captain Monty from American Dad!
I'd like to see Ricky hosting his own 'life story' like this and taking it on the road. The interviewer asks good questions but is too indulgent and overzealous.
The host reminds me of my gran , likes to talk but never listens !
Love Ricky but awful terrible host. So slow and dwells and emphasises every single word and takes 100x as long as is needed to ask a questions. OMFG painful
@Ricky Gervais you're too kind. No, really. You're too kind.

Great interview - the host saved the day!
Wow, did Biff Tanned travel back in time and completely erase Stephen Merchant? "I had David Brent fully formed [before I met Merchant]" and "Then I wrote the Office [all me and Merchant had nothing to do with it]." I get they've obviously had a falling out, but credit where it's due -- The Office wouldn't exist without him. Why are so many of you focussed in the interviewer, and not this glaring absurdity? The interviewee was fine -- had a lot of good insights, actually. Got Ricky to reappraise Brent as sad rather than sweet, and linked the Globes into Ricky's overall body of work in a way even Gervais felt was interesting. So you don't like his voice, so what? He got good answers and material from Ricky, and that's his job. The real sin here, and what I expected to find overflowing in the comments, is Merchant's wholesale erasure in a very deliberate way
I'd watch anything with Ricky Gervais... but I'm skipping this one.
Great host ..Mind you I'm deaf..So doesn't affect me..Here's some cucumbers..🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒Cheers.
about 27.00 "The interviewer says what he loves the way he never blinks", not sure what he means? Is this an American saying or something, I'm assuming that blinks doesn't mean actually blinking.

You serious? Blinking means exactly that. Blinking. The interviewer is weird, I'll give you that. Weird thing to say. I think he just likes the awkwardness of not blinking. (I myself don't recall David Brent not blinking.)

Ignore Jake -- "not blinking" means not flinching, never giving the game away. He's saying that bad I call you he can't believe how well Ricky inhabited the character; there were never any tells, no matter how absurd Brent got. (Or, at least, that is one use of the term "never blinking").
Philip Galanes: you are quite a strange character. peace
Heard some great new stories here! Yeah, the host isn't great... He interrupts Ricky several times and I want to hear everything Ricky says, always.
The interview doesn't get any better even three years later. The pretentiousness, the little notebook he holds, his looking into the camera while Ricky is responding to a question, the harping and ridicule of Ricky's music video from 1982, the almost incessant interruptions - I could go on and on. I honestly hope this was his last interview, not just for the viewers' sakes but for his sake as well. Just by looking at the aggregate of the comments, it's so sad that the interviewer completely overshadows that great Ricky Gervais.
And we can’t see the photos that they’re referring to WHY? Sounds like some of the photos are Ricky’s family shots, so rights’ payments can’t be an issue! Who edited this talk?
I was trying to enjoy this but the host put me right off so I had to switch off. What a ****!!
Is the interviewer drunk?
I agree with you "masters" Ricky needed merchants ...if fact think merchants is funnier and more talented than Rickey
i dont normally like to speak bad of people, but,,, who decided that yes, this is our best guy to do interviews for us?
The host actually made some good points, like about the deluded self-importance of people like Jolie, and seems to genuinely appreciate Gervais. He isn't the jokey type of host that people are used to, but is not without humor. He is an educated, sophisticated gentleman and doesn't deserve to be derided as in the comments below, which is an easy thing to do. This is one of the better, serious but not boring - as with the young but prematurely aged hosts at the Oxford Union - interviews with Gervais, where he talked more candidly about himself than he had before.
washes of the dishes with his own pee. great!
Shocking interviewer.
I'M A CAMP TWAT AND THEREFORE A CHAT SHOW HOST
Great interview, wasn't the host wonderful.
i really didn't think the host was that bad. he's not the star is he so why is everyone so concerned with his performance?
Weird event.
cant even watch it for ricky... w*theactual*f .. this host should never talk in public... ever ahahahhaha its unbearable...
Yet another American interviewer who makes Ricky feel uncomfortable. Even when he tells him to move on he's still aimlessly prodding.
Simply a bad interview...next...
Too bad the host is terrible.
These people have paid 40 Dollars to see and hear Ricky Gervais, not the camp, annoying interviewer who hardly let Ricky complete a sentence!
This guy is so cringey
has the interviewer got alzheimers == unwatchable
Phillip Galanes yuck!
Ricky is full of himself......why people think he's funny is beyond me, tells the same stories over and over again, then steals some co workers
No wonder no one has seen this. Worse interviewer ever! Talk about a disconnect! His response to Ricky’s self revelation is “It’s interesting. The way social mobility worked...” blah bitty blah blah blah. His research supersedes his ability to hear what Gervais is talking about. Hopefully, like Ricky and the monkeys, he learns from this experience. After all it’s free for us but those people paid $40! Glad to watch RG in anything.
Terrible interviewer. And he's a journalist? Guess I shouldn't be surprised anymore, looking at the news these days.
Jesus I can't believe the audience laughed. nothing said here was remotely funny.
