That is a great memory! Thanks for sharing it! It's sadly a rarity to see people who have been married last for more than 5 years even. My Grandparents got married in 1915 when they turned 18. They stayed married until my Grandpa passed away of a massive heart attack in 1982. They were married for 67 years! They were together for over 70 years. Childhood sweethearts. So hearing about people who have been married and have stayed together is a heartwarming memory of what my Grandparents had. I actually never got married. Sadly. Many reasons, many issues, my Parents loved each other but alcoholism was a huge and very difficult problem at times, but the infidelity was the one kicker. Seeing this growing up as well was a odd twist to what love was supposed to be. My parents got divorced, but then they remarried a year or two later. But then they divorced AGAIN! It was a roller-coaster with them. In my 18 to 20's years I had fun, not thinking of marriage. I also learned about infidelity first-hand myself and it HURT BAD! I understood the pain my Mom felt more than ever. Waking at 3am to hear her crying. Wondering where my Dad was. That betrayal is brutally harsh! I wasn't married to this gal, just "going out", so my Mom's pain had to be so hard to deal with. Later when I began to get more serious about marriage, my Mom's illness worsened. She had emphysema and I learned she would need more care. Eventually she'd need a caregiver 24/7. I had made her a promise that I'd never put her in a nursing home. So when that time came, I talked to my job, they told me to choose. My job or not. Well Jobs come and jobs go, but Mothers are forever! She took care of me for over 18 years! There was NO WAY I was going to give up on her and put her in a home. So NOT KNOWING about the Family Medical Leave Act that they just passed, I left. I had already been taking care of her somewhat for a couple years already, but this was as I said, now a everyday, all day, all night, every night issue. No more going out. No more parties, or cruising the Highway, no more late night Taco Bell runs. I became certified in home health care. Oddly enough karma came into play. I had wondered what I'd do for income? Sure enough her insurance paid for home care. Well 50% of it. I learned that they would pay me for getting certified, and for not placing her into a nursing home, they'd pay me $15.⁰⁰/hr. Well they would pay me $7.⁵⁰/hr. and my Mom was supposed to cover the other $7.⁵⁰. That DIDN'T happen, since I would NEVER charge my Mom to take care of her. I lived on the $7.⁵⁰/hr. and it all worked out. We set up ways where when her actual nurse came, I'd go get the groceries, her prescriptions, and her big love, MOVIES! 📼📼VHS📼📼BETA📼📼MOVIES!📼📼 I'd rent us between 4 and 8 movies. Mom loved Horror movies like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Day Of The Dead, 🎃🎃Halloween🎃🎃, Hellraiser, and others. Also she loved ACTION movies like Rambo, Rocky, Cobra, The Terminator, Alien, Aliens, etc. and we'd spend the weekends watching movies. I cook us dinners, breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. She loved her snacks! Then in the mid 90's she lost her fight. She passed away a little over a couple weeks before Christmas. Actually the date is coming up. December 5th. It crushed me! I was lost. Then as if that wasn't enough, I learned that my Dad was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. They had given him 6 to 8 months. I packed up and moved up north by my Dad. I was now caring for him as well. I found a job. It was a decent one for it being such a small town. The people were really nice, very caring, and extremely friendly and giving. When my car broke down on my way to Eau Claire, the neighborhood mechanic knew about our situation and he didn't charge me for the tow! Which given my distance from town would have costed me well over $100-$150.⁰⁰. Yet he only charged me for the parts and a ½hour of labor. What should have been a bill that easily exceeded over $250.⁰⁰, he charged me less than $75.⁰⁰. Small towns may not have the big town's way of blending in, or being just another person. Small towns KNOW EVERYONE, but in turn they also go out of their way to help you when you need it most. This was a GREAT place to retire, or live for that matter. Peaceful, quiet, clean air, and you never needed to lock your doors. My Dad made it for 18 months, not 6-8 like the docs said. But the last month, the cancer ravaged his body. It was heartbreaking to see that. Also having to see BOTH of my parents become bedridden was beyond difficult! My Dad weighed 180-200 pounds when he was healthy. But after the cancer hit and attacked, when he passed away he weighed barely 100 pounds. After he passsed I lost hope. While caring for him I had met the most AMAZING woman that I had EVER MET BEFORE! She was absolutely perfect! She was smart, funny, sweet, had a pure heart and body, and she was so beautiful! God she was so beautiful. She could be cute, goofy cute, sweet and sexy. I found love. But once again life gave me a GUT👊PUNCH!👊 Her dad HATED anyone who lived in a large city. City dwellers were either gangbangers, drug addicts, crackheads, or devil worshipping evildoers. So I was off limits. He tried everything to separate us to no avail. Her Mom met me and we got along great. She called me a comedian. But her dad, UGH! Then on the 4th of July, my Dad's battle with cancer ended. He passed away. Here was the GUT👊🤜PUNCH🤛👊. He was moving her to North Dakota. They were scheduled to leave to go see her new house that next week. However when her learned of my Dad's funeral date, he changed their plans to leave on the same day as the funeral. They would leave at 7am, thereby making it impossible for her to attend his funeral. I was crushed badly. I lost every bit of hope. I couldn't fight for her. I had lost everything and I withdrew into a dark shell! I lost her. I never got over her either. But I pray that she's happy! I have some wonderful memories of love and marriage and I have some brutal ones too. But stories like yours are wonderful! And they give me hope for others. I now ironically have the same illness that my Mother had. So marriage for me is not a possibility. But I hope and🙏pray🙏 that others find what you have. My favorite moment from 1978 was seeing Superman in the theater for the first time (I think it might have even been the first time I saw any movie in the theater). Then later to find out that Christopher Reeve shared my birthday....I was a fan from then on!

I was born in August 78. I'm much happier now than I was in my 20's.

Seems like a weird ritual but my wife and I actually enjoy these coming out on Sundays! We look forward to watching these over breakfast or lunch.

Being a kid in the 70s was great! Saturday morning cartoons and playing outside great times

I remember the blizzard of ‘78 so well! The first night after the snow stopped falling, my dad, brother and I walked through the woods across from our house and trekked to the nearest food store. We got all the ingredients for hot chocolate and homemade fudge and I went home and cooked it up over the stove. We had the best time! I miss those days so much.

I remember going outside to take some pictures of the blizzard. The sidewalk was pure ice and the wind blowing so hard I was pushed down the street but I was standing still. It was scary trying to get back in side. I didn't do that again.

⁠​⁠@@eckankar7756i remember that well, our street was an ice rink and sustained 60-70mph winds we had to hold hands to cross and get the neighbors. Dad had an old Sears generator with a big ol fuel tank plumbed to it, he back fed it into the house (those old fellers were smart) it was exciting as hell to a 12 yr old me but thinking back it could have went bad real quick. Sorry to ramble but it sure comes back when you talk about it, thanks 🐾✌️🇺🇸

I was 10 years old when Jonestown happened. I remember seeing it in the news and the pictures in the subsequent Times and Newsweek articles. It has always haunted me.

My senior high school teacher made us read Time magazing and write a report on Jim Jones. I think she was raising awareness of how easy it was to get into a cult back then. I am still haunted by the images of it.

I had Christmas with Jones twice in the 1960s. I was a kid, my mom had something happen with him at his house, grabbed me and out the door we went, never to return. I don't know what happened, but looking back, so glad it did.

I was 10 years old in Massachusetts during the blizzard. We had a foreign exchange student from Brazil during the winter. She never saw snow.

'78 also brought about the Star Wars action figure toy craze by Kenner. Thanks to this, there is still a thriving action figure & collector industry to this day.

I don't know how my parents found them but they got me the first lightsaber Kenner made(really bad but as a 5 year old I loved it) and most of the main character action figures for Christmas. I was the hit of my friend groups as everyone wanted to play with them. Of course I went through my Star Wars isn't cool days in college and actually sold all my Star Wars stuff for $50 dollars, including all the trading cards. To this day, I always think they will show up on Antiques Roadshow and someone will tell how he got this treasure for only $50 at a garage sale.

action figures were around before then, and would have still been around without star wars. gi joe, superhero figures, space robots from japan, all were around before star wars.

@@perfectallycromulent- True. But action figures before Star Wars were VERY different. You had either the doll-like mannequin style of GI Joe & MEGO's Planet of the Apes, or inarticulated army men. Post Star Wars, action figures changed to the 1:18 scale, perfect for vehicles & playsets also becoming part of toy aisles.

@@Guernicaman that was due to plastics getting expensive, not due to star wars. and regardless of the rest, the giant robots part of action figures existed independently of star wars and was there before it. transfomers didn't come out of the success of star wars, instead star wars was in part inspired by the success of space toys from japan.

The entire 70s were about the best time to grow up. I also know the 60s were pretty good also and allot of changes happen there. I looked forward to turning 13 back in 1967. I could be a big shot teenager. I got my drivers license in early 1971 and everything seemed to take off through those glorious 70s. I felt like I lived a whole lifetime in those next 10 years. I hitch hiked from coast to coast and from Florida to Canada. The party dope was even better back then too. I know I did enough to drop an Elephant and maybe a Horse or two. Cars were hot and the ladies were fast. Rock & Roll was at it's tops and I played lead guitar in a popular hometown band. I built and raced Mustangs. I also learned a trade in floor covering, tile, carpet, vinyl, hardwood. I developed my own business into total kitchen and bath remodeling and made a good living. I screwed up allot here and there, but I had one hell of a good time growing up in the 70s. The opportunities through the 70s seemed endless. Not at all like today. I would give my "I" teeth and left arm to go back to the 70s.

Absolutely! With All things considered, and accounted for, it was thepeak of humanity. Example-there were still the evil human things, like Nam, Jonestown, and 3 Mile Island, but enlightenment stuff, like racial harmony, and exercising, finally started to come of age.

I was 10 this year. I remember everything you mentioned for the year. I was so young and it was more good times than bad with my friends and school.

I was in my senior year of high school and went out joyriding in that blizzard with my friend , even though the State was shut down.We were pulled over and told to go home by the policeman.I cringe now at how stupid that was, but at that age, you think that you are going to live forever. I miss those good old days.We had the best t.v. shows back then, and no computers and cell phones to keep us from living our best lives.

My favorite years as a kid were 1976-1979. It was a glorious time.

OMG!! I was born exactly one year after that! Van Halen has long been one of my favorite bands! Such a great debut album!

Great memories in this series. In 1978 we were part of the Big Freeze, and nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning since we did not know how dangerous it was to use a small camping stove for heat inside a completely sealed up home. We all felt sleepy and then while several of us were asleep I went out the room and into the bathroom. In there my head cleared and I knew something was wrong. I knew we were all in trouble, and guessed (correctly it turned out) that the camp stove was the problem. Later in the year, I stood outside a theater in Norfolk, VA, trying to decide if I would see Jaws 2 (since I had finally--just the year before--seen the first Jaws and loved it) or Grease starring Olivia Newton-John. As the Number One fan of Olivia I really wanted to see her first film, but Jaws had been soooo good. I went to see Jaws 2, the sequel. I enjoyed the film, but felt bad for missing Olivia's film. The very next week, while I was in Washington, D.C. I went to see Grease while on a date. As soon as it was over we raced across town to the midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and even though I had been looking forward to a round of great sex, the energy expenditure of the two films wore us both out and we just fell into bed and went right to sleep.

I would also loved to see Dawn Of The Dead whenever it first came out.. You're lucky that you actually experienced the 80s.. I wish I experienced the 80s, but NO my mom and dad had to wait until 91 to have me while both my sister and brother (by a different mother) were born in 70 and 72 which makes me jealous! Only if there was time travel I would be more than happy to go back in 1969 so I could experience the 70s, 80s, & the 90s (which I did experience the 90s, but was 8 years old by the end of 99 going on 9 in the mid 2000

@@kingofkings69ner I feel your pain ! But i was born in '74. I wish i could've been born in the 60s because i just love the 70s. I got conscious at age of 5 so i do remember the late 70s. Yeah the 80s were awesome and probably the last decade where the world was still 'normal'... Nowadays all you hear is economy, money, work, crisis, austerity, more economy, more money, more work...etc. During the 80s that simply wasn't there. People just lived their lives... relaxed. I miss that.

1978 was the year that debuted the TV shows WKRP in Cincinnati and Battlestar Galactica.

I remember 1978 and the amazing movies and music! The blizzard was crazy that year!

My Dad's substitute middle school teacher, was Jim Jones. My Mom worked with two ladies at the Ukiah Bank, who went to Jonestown, and never came back. My Aunt was taught French in school, by Jones Wife. My other Aunt, is friends with Tracy, the young girl who escaped into the jungle, when the airstrip shooting went down. My Uncle, who owns the local funeral home, helped bury many of the victims. Many years later, I think in 2015, the teenage guy in the blue shirt, shown talking with Jim about leaving, lived in the small county I'm from, and died by suicide-by-cop, from a police officer I know. It's strange how many of my older family members are linked to this tragic event.

Yeah I remember the Blizzard of 78 here in Columbus Ohio the wind blew at 60 MPH wind gust of 70 mph, up in Cleveland they had wind gusts of 100 mph.

My cousin was born during that blizzard in south bend indiana. Outside of Palm Sunday the blizzard of 78 was the most talked about amongst the adults when I was a child.

Not very often someone can look back on their life and say that was the best year of my life , yet that is exactly what I can say about 1978

My Mother was on her own with me in the 70s and had homelessness, nice Catholics attacking her and struggling to work as well but I always look back to the Dukes of Hazzard, the Fall Guy, Robin Williams clowning around in Mork and Mindy with a happy heart. He made me laugh and Mam bought me a great Mork and Mindy pyjamas which I wore all the time. Gary Coleman was a scream in Different Strokes: 'Whatchoo talking bout Willis?' And I remember when visiting my Granny at Christmas Santa bringing me an Evel Kneval wind up stunt motorbike. That was great. Most of these recollections are late 70s and early 80s. Though we were outcasts to some of the nice people back then truly I was given the privilege of living the American Dream by my Mother. Don't want to be young again but wish that I was an adult back then and make things right. Miss the 70s. Thanks Mam.

We lived right off the expressway when the blizzard of 78 hit. Commuters and truckers stranded on the expressway abandoned their vehicles and were knocking on doors in our neighborhood, looking for somewhere to sleep. Good times.

I'm down for whatever decade Weird History decides to go over after Timeline 1970s But I feel that the 1960s, the 2000s & the 2010s deserve to be in the Timeline Series

Mines too! My dad drove my mom to the hospital in one of the worst snow storms ever to have me! Jan.10,78! Then had my brother 2 yrs later when it never stopped raining and storming March 1980.

I was 1 when the blizzard of 78 hit Southeast Michigan near Detroit, my parent have pictures of the aftermath, our 4 foot fence was buried in the backyard with some parts covered the tiop over a foot in some spot where it drifted...we had alot of big snowstorms in the early 80s..I remember that as a kid.

1978 was one of the BEST years of my life, in fact, it is 3rd,1981 and 1979 beat it! LOL 🍻 (the late 60's were cool as a kid though, loved that era as well!)

The moment I saw Larry Csonka on that Schick Commercial, I thought about that Miracle at The Meadowlands and to this day, I still remember the stunned look of disbelief on my dad's face. What a disaster!!

Since I was only 8 years old, growing up in Michigan, for me it was the blizzard.

1978 was the year I graduated high school in central PA. Between December and March I don't think we were in school for any more than 3 weeks during that time because of the constant heavy snows just about every 3 days. So much fun partying with friends during that carefree time.

For me it was the blizzard I was 7 at the time and thought it was awesome. Great time to be a kid.

First of all, I LOVE the Timeline series. But I'm surprised you didn't mention the release of Van Halen's first album, which came out in 1978. It's often considered one of the most influential rock albums of all time. My dad told me the story of when he heard Running with the Devil for the first time and being mesmerized.

I remember when I was really young seeing that fly over in Jonestown and I remember all those bodies looking like a bunch of dirty clothes on the ground.

The biggest moment of 1978 for me is my birth. Guessing the blizzard had my parents snowed in bc I was born in late October (I was two weeks early) 😂.

Can't wait till the 1979 Timline! That's when I was born and, I wanna see all the crazy SH☆T that happened! Probably a lot of Serial Killers, people with weird hair and, some kind of terrible war somewhere! Can't wait!!!!!

This is EPIC! THANK YOU VERY MUCH for sharing these wonderful moments, ads, and memories with us. In 1978 I was just 10 years old, and I remember most of these things that happened. Some I learned a bit later on, as we didn't have the same media insanity we do now. Irregardless of the "violence" that took place, the 70's for me anyway was a safer time. I walked to school without fear. I played outside constantly, and loved heading out to the trails to ride my bike, build forts, or go fishing at our little lake we had. Granted it had mostly Bullheads and some smaller perch and pan fish but it was fun! K-Tel and Ronco were the 70's commercial versions of the 30 minute ads they make now. They had some oddball items. Mini skis, igloo builders, and other plastic "toys" and goofy gimmicky items. The BEST however was the JC Penny's Christmas Catalog 🎄 and the Sears Wish Book! Those two books were the most anticipated things other than Christmas itself! These were just some of the best times in my life! Thanks again for sharing these. You definitely got another subscriber! The Dawn of the Dead movie comment made me remember that we were 9 years old and walked 2 miles to the mall to watch that movie several times amongst other movies, Pink Floyd's The Wall was big and many others. My point is we were not even close to teenagers and were wide open to do whatever we wanted, the main point the folks made was don't bother us and don't get arrested.

I was three but I remember the blizzard, the circus was in town and they used the elephants to pull cars out of the snow.

as an addition, the Blizzard contributed to NASCAR's surge in popularity. NASCAR was only popular in the south, and with people in the north stuck in home watching the TV due to the heavy snow, the first ever broadcasted live race of Daytona 500 in 1979 was a huge hit.

Is it just one guy? I think the narrator is a comedian named Tom Blank, but with all the editing and titles I would think there is an entire production team involved. Furthermore, the series should be picked up by a TV station. It is always so good. I'm still waiting for them to cover Waite and Wiate Phillips.

1978 was a great year for television. The Incredible Hulk and the soap series Dallas premiered. Then, in 1979, The Dukes of Hazzard premiered. CBS had a gold mine for tv on Friday nights back then.

I was little but still remember the days off from school and sledding down our big hill covered with snow. I have a picture that the show was almost up to my chest in some areas. Remember mom making hot chocolate and my dad couldn't go to work for a couple days. They were both happy when school was reopened!

Favorite 70's moment(s) we're the Ramones blowing up out of CBGB, In turn sparking the UK punk explosion, changing music history forever. Oh and that Scared Straight segment had one moment I never forgot:"The other day I saw a commercial for a "Happy Meal". I ain't been happy..in 20 yrs.!!"

1978 was the year of my high school graduation and start of my daily bus trips to NYC for art school, yet I swear I don't remember the horrible snow we received that winter. As I did a large part of the family shoveling, this still blows my mind.

So much love and sweat put into this. Being a man born on 1970 this brought back so many memories. Well done and thank you :)

In high school during the blizzard of 78. Late Jan. birthday meant I usually got snowed in so not unexpected. Then the snow stayed and my sister joked about being snowed in her birthday in March. We were. They tried to bus kids to school one time in between but buses were hitting buried objects busting the doors(ours hit a mailbox then a car slid into it) or had accidents. They gave up after that. Also found out I am allergic to cold after spending the day making a snow woman. Came in to warm up and busted out in hives.

Just stayed up extra late to watch this!

I took my high school girl friend to the movies to see Up in Smoke. In my 1970 Chevelle SS. It was wonderful times. 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Steve Mason 2 days ago The entire 70s were about the best time to grow up. I also know the 60s were pretty good also and a lot of changes happen there. I looked forward to turning 13 back in 1967. I could be a big-shot teenager. I got my driver's license in early 1971 and everything seemed to take off through those glorious 70s. I felt like I lived a whole lifetime in those next 10 years. I hitchhiked from coast to coast and from Florida to Canada. The party dope was even better back then too. I know I did enough to drop an Elephant and maybe a Horse or two. Cars were hot and the ladies were fast. Rock & Roll was at its tops and I played lead guitar in a popular hometown band. I built and raced Mustangs. I also learned a trade in floor covering, tile, carpet, vinyl, and hardwood. I developed my own business into total kitchen and bath remodeling and made a good living. I screwed up a lot here and there, but I had one hell of a good time growing up in the 70s. The opportunities through the 70s seemed endless. Not at all like today. I would give my "I" teeth and left arm to go back to the 70s.
