This is a quick timelapse video with some annotations over the top that briefly go over my process for creating PS1-style weapons. Basically, I begin by creating a texture from a reference image. I try to block out the key features of the gun as well as trying to get the most bang-for-your-buck out of the texture space available.
Once the initial layout has been created, I go in and paint some further details (highlights, shadows) as well as adding a noise layer over the top to add a bit of randomness to the texture. This helps at lower resolutions to create the illusion of detail.
Once the texture is finished, I take the reference images into Blender and create the model itself. I try and retain the silhouette with as little geometry as possible. Once the model has been created, I cube project the UVs and begin lining them up on the model. I try and re-use parts of the texture (i.e. in this model, the front of the barrel is actually part of the laser sight). Once this is completed, I scale the gun to the correct size and export as FBX.
I then import into Unity and test to ensure the model is working as expected.

Literally didn't even think to clean up a PS1 texture before applying it to the mesh, definitely makes it look better
This video has done more to explain this process than most videos that can take an hour. Thanks!
I keep coming back to this video from time to time just because it reminds me of something very important: keep it simple. When making low poly stuff I’ve found that a lot of the detailing can be done with just textures. It also helps with unwrapping as well when you don’t have a lot of extra geometry to work with! Thanks for making this bideo 🎉
This is an amazing model not only that this video has taught me a lot about blender i didn't know, great job!

Thanks a lot! I put this video together quickly so if there’s anything you’d like covered in more detail, let me know :-)

@@awhiskin No problem
Thank you for video, now I understand how useful noise is in creating PS1 style textures
Amazing tutorial please make more!
I got inspired to make a ps1 p320 because of this video and it’s so much easier when everything doesn’t have to be perfect. The ps1 style also has its nostalgic charm so it doesn’t look bad in my eyes

Oh awesome! I’d be keen to see it, do you have any screenshots posted online at all? 😁

@@awhiskin i'm in the process of making it, but i can't wait for it to be a complete gun :D kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJWFsrV-g7qrf6w.html ps: i tried commenting earlier, but i think my comment got blocked because i used an imgur link, so i made a video

@@3astava looking awesome dude! Can’t wait to see the final product.
that texture technique is pretty good!
Thx for the tutorial now going to try it my self and good job :)
Probably better than the same pistol in metal gear solid
SO helpful.. thx 🥺🥺hope this video won't be deleted.....
perfect
lol that usp reminds me of cod 4
what is this music in background?
This is awesome man. What kind of resources are you using to learn Unity and Blender? I hope to see some more in depth tutorials from you. Subbed.

Sorry for the late reply - I'm mostly self taught using KZread tutorials etc. I do have a bit of a background in programming which helps a lot with Unity development. Grant Abbitt (kzread.info/dron/ZFUrFoqvqlN8seaAeEwjlw.html) is a great channel for Blender tutorials that I have used many times in the past.
A tutorial for making textures like this one you did in this video would be nice. No pressure tho.

Might be able to put something together - this video is obviously just a timelapse vs. a straight tutorial so is there anything in particular you were wondering about? :)

@@awhiskin I'm still quite confused about the process of turning the reference/prefered image into the textures. By following your timelapse in slower reproduction speed, I was able to do a texture for a model I made, but it's not that great and I could'nt apply it properly to the model.
imagine doing normal baking and substance painter when you can just do ps1 style
Question, how did you unwrap so perfectly? my map is a mess compared to yours
@awhiskin

Hey mate, I used the ‘Cube Unwrap’ under the UV unwrap menu as this seemed to give the best results. Then a lot of manual tweaking!
How did you get psx graphics in unity?
@awhiskin
Жыл бұрын
In this video I used a paid addon called ‘PSX Effects’ ( assetstore.unity.com/packages/vfx/shaders/psxeffects-132368 ) but you can achieve similar (and in some ways, more authentic) graphics using HPSXRP ( github.com/pastasfuture/com.hauntedpsx.render-pipelines.psx ). Hope that helps!
Timelapse - Modelling a PS1-style SOCOM pistol... models a USP Tactical instead xD

Not sure what the difference between the Mk 23 SOCOM and a USP is, but they're very similar guns. I think the Mk 23 SOCOM was specifically developed for special forces use vs. the USP which I think is used by general police & military. Could definitely be wrong though!

@@awhiskin The main difference is the size. A Mk23 is somewhere around the size of a Desert Eagle, where a USP is more of a standard size. It doesn't matter much for the amount of detail in your model, but there are controls present on the Mk23 that are not present on a USP. There are other differences, but again, it doesn't really matter for the level of detail here. I was just having some fun ;)

@@tacticalteamkilling6539 Ah fair enough - yeah after watching some videos of people shooting the Mk23 it's surprising how large it actually is!

@@awhiskin Yeah it's quite the beast of a handgun lol. It's what's referred to as an "offensive" handgun, while most handguns are considered "defensive" weapons.

"as its a PS1 style model, you don't need to be 100% perfect" is such a bullshit thing to say. you're already working with less definition, thus making your job a lot easier. if you half-ass out even this, its gonna look like ass. also you have a LOT of unused texture space. you could easily draw some extra details like the back of the slider to show the slot for the hammer, the opening for the barrel etc
