Making Retro Characters - Devlog 9
Ойындар
I inspected models in several PS1 games to learn how to make proper retro characters.

wtf
i don’t know how, but your game’s assets look like from the PS1 era and the driving so far does look like something from the driver games or the old gta’s, very excited for your game
did not see this one coming imho this game is coming together pretty nicely
Your characters capture the old style vibe perfectly! Also your tool you've created is really inspiring
Brilliant character designs! I really like the ability to change colours. Great job!
The characters look insane! When I start watching one of your devlogs I always have high expectations of what you made and you surpass them every time. Keep up the incredible work 👏

Thank you! That's awesome to hear!
absolutely nailing the ps1 look
LOVE ur videos man , been following you for 2yrs .
Amazing work! Accurately conveys PS1 style
Dang that Echo Night and Alone in the Dark comparison is wild. I think its interesting that you went with the method that was harder to skin rather than just breaking each limb segment into a different model using the same texture. Although yours match up so well at the joints that I don't know if it would be possible to achieve that same level of quality with having the limbs be separate.
I love to live vicariously through PS1 devs like you and Aaron Young- because I'd love to do something like this but lack the patience and skill! You folks rock. Keep it up!

hey man, I am a student in 3d art and have been trying to make some ps1 models myself. your work is so well done, the animation, polycount, textures, everything ! it all fits so perfectly i'm amazed really. hope that one day i could do something as cool as your characters !
Hell yeah! Great as always mate!
Awesome vid! Your textures are great! Suits are so difficult too, and yours looked perfect :)

Most people say they do low poly, but you know its really low poly when you see triangles not squares on the body.
This is my favorite youtube channel.
the goat of old school graphics
New sub here. Awesome work, congrats!
Really nice results! I thought the kind of stuff I was doing was "low poly" but it's actually more "high poly cartoon". I must try this "true low poly" one of these days... And yes, rigging is probably my least favorite part of the whole process but I've gotten a lot better with practice.
youre such a gem, i love your personality
Great job, I dream about weight painting too
Amazing
Great Video :D
Amazing work man! Could you make a tutorial about how you made your characters blink in UE5? I'm about to start a retro game and I've been struggling thinking how to make it.
1:58 the most interesting thing I saw today... really interesting techniques there
Love how you customized the color of the wireframe and vertices in Blender to 3ds Max style ;)
Thnx bro
Wow, I am starting modeling in Blender and would train on making low-res models of PS1 games.
Driver 2 - the best game ever made. Truer words have never been spoken. 😉 Nice work!

Yay! I just about pronounced your name correctly! Keep up the great work dude.
Glad to see you're still working hard at this. Did you switch to UE5 for the game or was it just for the character demo?
@Marcis.

Thanks! Well, you're in luck because I don't plan to do intros anytime soon.
damn bro you the goat
Hi there Mārcis, would you ever consider developing a detailed course on modeling, texturing and rendering PS1/PS2 characters, objects, etc. I would definitely pay for this!
@Marcis.

Hi! Yes I have thought about it but it's not something I'm planning to do anytime soon.
Great video! I am curious, can I import the characters from your asset back in blender with the unreal rig attached? @Marcis

hmmm... I haven't tested it but I don't think so.
Love this. How did you texture using Substance Painter though ?
i miss your videos
very nice!! how did you make the eyelids part of the same texture? does animating that part happen in Blender or Unreal Engine?
Yooo what about some love for your assets on the Unity asset store?
"fun fact": Marci is a shortened version of a name in my country.
Didn’t have to do me dirty like that 😭
