AOT PART 2
Episode 20 of AOT the final season was called Memories of the future.
Ok so in the last episode Zeke gained control of the founding titan which gives him power over every single eldian on the planet. With this potential he could finally complete his euthanisation plan and sterilise all subjects of Ymir, however, being the amazing big brother that he is, he only wanted to do this with Eren by his side. In Zeke’s mind he assumes that the reason Eren betrayed him is because he was brainwashed by Grisha to become an eldian restorationist, which of course is what happened to Zeke himself when he was growing up. For that reason he uses the power of the founder to take them into Grisha’s memories, so he can make Eren realise that he’s been manipulated by their father.
The first flashback they visit is one of Eren crawling and being held as a baby. Now is probably the best time to establish the rules of travelling through memories and rule number 1 is that the Yeager bros are not actually travelling into the past but rather it’s more like a simulation created by the founding titan. In this simulation they can witness key moments from Grisha’s life, but no one can see them back, since everyone is basically an NPC. This brings us to rule number 2, which is that because all these memories are just visual representations of things that took place, it means Zeke and Eren shouldn’t be able to change how anything plays out.
We’ll get back to this topic later on to explain how Eren did what he did, but for the time being let’s focus on Grisha himself. In this memory, we can see that he used his position as a doctor to get close to nobles inside the walls and this is one of the reasons why Krueger thought he’d make a good spy. As a dr with knowledge from the outside world, Grisha was one of the best if not the best on the island and had already saved the people of Shiganshina from a plague a few years earlier. This accomplishment is likely how the important people inside the walls heard of him and by getting close to them Grisha could eventually find out who has the founding titan. While observing this memory, Zeke thought this was another example of how his dad is a terrible person, since if his plan had been discovered then it would obviously put his family at risk.
Despite that Eren wasn’t so convinced and as they continued to move through these memories, it became clear that Grisha did learn from the mistakes he made when raising Zeke. That was proven in this particular flashback, when after only a few years on Paradis, he managed to discover the identity of the true royal family but in the end he couldn’t go through with it and returns to his family back home. What this showed is that he loved his new son too much to risk losing everything.
Moving on to one of the best scenes in the entire episode; we see that Grisha has fallen asleep in his basement while writing one of his three books that would be discovered years later.
In this moment while he’s asleep he starts to receive memories from the future that belong to present day Eren and I’m gonna take a second to explain what exactly is going here. To start things off, it’s pretty normal for any titan shifter to see memories that belong to a previous user but when it comes holders of the attack titan, these guys are sometimes able to see memories from future inheritors as well. One example is how back in season 3 Kruger told his successor to save Mikasa and Armin despite neither of them being born yet and now in this new episode a similar thing happens again. Because Eren and his dad are both holders of the attack titan, Grisha from the past is therefore able to see memories that belong to Eren in the future. In this specific scene, notice how when Eren looks down at this picture of Zeke, his dad then immediately reacts and apologies to his first son. Then, when present day Eren looks directly at his raggedy bearded brother, Grisha from the past reacts again, as he sees a vision of that bearded man who he recognises as Zeke. What this shows is that thanks to his attack titan, Grisha can occasionally see the future through Eren’s point of view and as this video continues we’ll break down how this ability enables them to communicate through time.

It was also hinted in s3 when Kruger said you need to save mikasa and armin. It makes sense since the whole premise of the attack titan is to “keep marching forward”. This can also be seen as “… in time”. Also, theres a theory that since Eren got the founding and attack titans powers, he was able to send memories backwards to all previous attack titans. When Eren went up to Grisha and told him to fight. Oo that was exhilarating to see. Even though it seemed like that’s what was going to happen based on how Grisha was acting. Like he needed an extra push. But this episode made me really respect Eren. Because he really did stay true to himself. It’s true, he has always been like this since he was young. While I was waiting for season 4 to come out, I rewatched the previous seasons and during that time it became clear to me how Isayama portrayed Eren even from the start. It seemed likena clear foreshadow of what was to come. One of my favorite quotes from Eren is after he killed those men who kidnapped Mikasa. “I got rid of dangerous animals. They just happened to resemble humans.”

I actually think THAT is what allowed Eren to break the chain and regain control in the first place. My theory is that Zeke was only able to break the vow renouncing war due to the power of his own conviction surpassing that of even king Fritz'. With Zeke re-embracing Grisha as his father, he sees that being born an eldian into this world isn't just needless suffering, so his determination to go through with the eldian euthanization plan wavers, reinstigating the vow renouncing war since Fritz' determination once again surpasses Zeke's, thus returning the power of the founder to Eren.

That's why he needed Eren to be a key and work with him so they could work around the vow (the euthanization itself would probably be fine with the vow though). Otherwise, if he ate Eren and obtained the power normally, he would be bound by the Wall King's vow and once they were all euthanized, Zeek wouldn't be able to scare the world away from Paradis for long enough for the rest of Eldia to die of old age.

@@D_.-00 The best way to explain this is to make 3 distinctions, Eren, hologram Grisha, and past Grisha. One thing to keep in mind is that hologram Grisha is just a manifestation of past Grisha and doesn’t exist. Another thing to remember is that the Attack Titans ability is it allows someone to see future memories of a next successor. Past Grisha can see Erens future memories, and if the Attack Titan hypothetically had a successor after Eren, Eren would hypothetically see the future memories of the next successor (afaik Eren doesn’t have a successor). Eren and Zeke didn’t go back in time, rather Zeke is showing Eren hologram Grisha. Now this leaves the question of how is Eren influencing the past if they didn’t go back in time. What Eren is doing is that he is taking advantage of the Attack Titans ability to allow Past Grisha to see into Erens memories. He is using this ability to talk to past Grisha. It is also through this that Grisha can see Zeke. He is not seeing Zeke through his eyes but rather through Erens memories and thus through his point of view. In the final scene where he hugs Zeke, Past Grisha is actually seeing through Eren’s memories both Zeke and Hologram Grisha. As far as past Grisha taking the founding Titan, Eren is taking advantage of the Attack Titans ability as a way to communicate with past Grisha. That’s the jist of it. Eren is seeing a hologram Grisha, hologram Grisha is simply a manifestation of everything past Grisha did, and Past Grisha can see Zeke and can receive messages and be convinced by Eren through the Attack Titans ability to show memories from future successors. As for how past Eren knew what was going to happen, he isn’t looking into the future like Dr Strange. He is looking into past memories of past Grisha. Because past Grisha has part memories of what older Eren will do in the future, younger Eren can access every memory that past Grisha had of older Eren.

Also I like your theory because let’s say if Attack Titan does indeed have these kind of power to see into the future from the very early days (before the oath), that means Eldian have strategic advantage over any war they fought because they can see the outcome. However in the oath case, since the cold war is going to be far spanning years, it is going to be a long game. So, the only titan capable of doing this is the Attack Titan. I really appreciated the shift on perspective of Eren. While his rage against the titans is completely justified in earlier seasons (even his rage towards the people who left Eldians ignorant within the walls), his continued determined hatred really shows how dangerous and destructive he has been throughout the story. Of course Eren wouldn't change from simply witnessing the outside world for a few years.

I would say a fourth possible explanation to the final question of why did Grisha still pass the titans to Eren would be that he didn’t have a choice since the future memories of eren having the titans are proof that it was bound to happen. Ironically Eren, the character that wanted more than anything to be free, might be tied to a predetermined future outlined in the future memories the holders see without a way to fight against it.

With all that being said, this can also mean that Eren could have persuaded even other attack titans even before Grisha. So this means he could have manipulated Eren Kruger to give the attack titan to Grisha. This can even possibly predate all the way to the first attack titan. Since time functions differently in the paths realm, he could have spent all his time there manipulating every single attack titan so that it could end up in his hands eventually. I know that he would need to have the power of the founding titan to do so, but with the rumbling confirmed, it basically confirms that Eren also is given full access to the founders abilities. Thus allowing him to stay in the paths realm to send future memories to past attack titan users just so that it can all lead to this very moment. Meaning, that Eren could be the mastermind behind every thing since titans came about. Hence the intro "This is the story you started".

We know that Eren is the last attack titan, meaning he could give memories to literally every owner the attack titan ever had, and nobody could give eren memories. What is the titan known for? Marching for freedom. If eren is the last attack titan, he very well could have given the memories to make people fight for freedom in every generation, making him the sole reason the attack titan is the way it is.

I think that after all those interaction and realizations Grisha made in the hideout of Rheiss family with Eren, he felt like his own son,Eren, had total control of his father's mind..Grisha felt a prisoner of his own son's will and because of the Attack Titan inside him, he had a strong impulse to literally get rid of his Titan, so that he can feel free from his son. For the last part of the video when you explained Grisha's reasons for giving his titan to Eren, the better explanation is that Grisha's actions were set in stone. As you said, the fact that Eren sent him memories means Eren gets the Attack Titan in the future. So Eren not getting the Attack Titan would be a paradox, and it can't be resolved by Grisha just fading away, that's not how it works. What's next, the Reiss family members will come back to life and the church will be restored? No, the better explanation is that the future is already set in stone, just as the past is. Meaning Eren *will* get the Attack Titan no matter what Grisha wants. If Grisha decides to give it to someone else, then that someone will end up being eaten by Eren. It's basically like what happens in Oedipus. Even if you know the future, taking actions to alter that future will simply result in those actions leading to the future you were trying to avoid. It's a closed, unalterable time loop.

A lot of people were saying that Eren is 'picking and choosing' memories from paths to show to Grisha but I don't think that is what is happening. Obviously like the the narrator of this video is explaining, Eren did have some influence over what Grisha was seeing in this moment. But the fact that Grisha was seeing through Eren's eyes at these moments at all was not in Eren's control. I think that rather they were all fated to come together at this memory/memories. What is really happening here is the Attack Titan's power to transcend time (NOT Eren using the founding Titan's power to pick and choose memories to send to Grisha). For those who are confused about what I mean by this, here is my terrible explanation of what the narrator was saying in this video: Remember: Grisha said that the Attack Titan's power is that it is able to see into the memories of the future inheritors. An example of this could be when Kruger was experiencing the future memory of Grisha saying to Eren, "Mikasa's life, Armin's life, everyone's life depends on you being able to control this power", right before having Eren eat him. Kruger experienced that memory right before giving Grisha the Attack Titan and said to Grisha, "save Mikasa and Armin" even though at that time, neither Grisha nor Kruger knew who Mikasa and Armin are. Similarly, right before giving Eren the Attack Titan, Grisha has a similar experience. He sees through future Eren's eyes in this moment. The CRAZY thing is, the future memory of Eren that Grisha happened to see was this very moment itself, because in the future (aka this episode) Eren and Zeke decide to go through Grisha's memories and look back upon this moment. Why was it this exact moment that Grisha happened to see? Who tf knows lol. Why was it that Kruger saw Grisha saying 'Save Mikasa and Armin' from the future? I think the answer to both of these questions is that it is simply just fate. These are the memories they happened to see, no one was incepting them into their heads. So basically, Grisha is probably having a crazy out of body experience in this moment. He is looking through the eyes of future Eren, who happens to be looking at past Grisha through the power of the founding titan. So Grisha was seeing this present moment through Eren's eyes (and Eren is standing behind Grisha). So Grisha is basically seeing himself in the third-person as he talks to / hugs Zeke. One thing that is interesting to think about is how the f*** Eren must feel in this situation, or even how he felt at the end of season 3. When he kissed Historia's hand at the end of season 3, he glimpsed into Grisha's memories of this exact moment. That is why in this episode it flashes back to Eren kissing historia's hand. He kisses her hand, then re-lives these memories through Grisha's perspective. Remember the horrified face Eren has at the end of season 3 after kissing historia's hand? That is the same horrified look that Grisha had on his face when he was about to crush the children. So at the end of season 3, Eren experienced the same anguish his father felt on this day.... only to learn that the anguish was caused by none other than himself.... It must have been hard for Eren to deal with this. Think about the beginning of season 3, how disappointed Eren was to find out that his father crushed all those children. Then when he kissed Historia's hand, he realized that HE was the one who convinced his father to kill all those children and re-lived that experience through Grisha. I think this is the moment in the series where Eren "changed". And when I say "changed" I don't really mean he changed. I mean he realized that this future is completely inevitable; it is a conundrum, completely out of his control. From this moment on, Eren knew that sometime in the future, he would convince his dad to kill those children and push this story forward. From this moment he knew that he had to keep pushing forward. The future is the future. And when the future affects the past, it becomes certain that that future cannot be changed because if it was changed, the past would be changed too. From this moment on, he knew that things were going to go his way, which is why he was being so sketch in season 4 part 1 going along with Zeke's plan. Because he KNEW that Zeke's plan wasn't going to work as a result of this future-past-present bullshit.

It has to be her who is truly in control here, letting this stuff happen. Why was it that Ymir decided to re-build Zeke's body at the beginning of S4P2? I think the answer to this question is that Ymir wanted all this stuff to happen, she wanted Eren and Zeke to touch so that this moment would occur.

its also interesting to note that from grisha's perspective, given that eren and zeke have been dabbling in those simulated memories ever since eren's birth (his first memory), grisha has probably been under the assumption than both eren and zeke have been watching over him. To put into different words, grisha was haunted by eren and zeke for the remainder of his life, ever since eren was born. its nothing too important, but it gives a new perspective on what it was like for grisha throughout those years after eren's birth. Also, WIT actually made a very expectable mistake when adapting the first episode, since they show grisha looking directly at kid eren and carla when holding the basement key. In the manga, its hard to tell but after seeing this scene you can very well assume that grisha was not facing eren, since you get a profile shot of him. that said, there is no background in that scene (its just blank white) so its completely understandable that WIT could think of it as just a profile shot of grisha facing eren and carla

Honestly i really feel bad about Zeke and Eren’s relationship. The way Zeke is trying ti save Eren and become sort of like a Father Figure to his younger brother is cute, but for Eren to do all these things and just use him is sad. This episode was amazing because it also shows a bit about the time loop theory (which i think is true.). (Edit) Holy, never expected my comment to go a bit viral, this is my first comment that went a bit viral

Griesha *doesn’t* realize what Marley did. He cries to Eren wondering why he can’t know more - particularly about the initial Marleian invasion. He admits knowing what is to come much later - things even Zeke and Eren have not yet seen and only hopes and prays that it’s for the freedom of Eldia. He likely passes on the power for the same reason he killed those children when he clearly *didn’t* want to. He’s compelled by the path set before him - the story he started when he stepped beyond his own wall as a child.

  • @debochando

Of course he does. Grisha cries just after the attack on the reiss. Once he goes back to find eren and pass him the titan, he KNOWS the wall was attacked and says to eren to avenge his mom. I believe this is the moment the OP was talking.

@@CJ-ot5wp I disagree with the ideas eren is being controlled I don’t think any character from the series has any other control the the other characters don’t I believe that in this this universe things are not predetermined but happen because nothing else can happen for the universe can continue to exist and I think that any other possibility won’t happen Bc it cant/wouldn’t . Which is what makes the “future memories possible. I think that eren did exactly what he wanted to do the entire series and just accepted the sacrifices because as he said I would take others freedom before they take mine which is exactly what he did.
