Time Team S15-E13 The Fort of the Earls, Dungannon, Northern Ireland
In 1602 the English forces attacked and took one of the most important strongholds in Ireland - Dungannon.
In the heart of Ulster, Dungannon was the seat of the O'Neills - the most powerful family in Ireland, allied to France and Spain and enemies of James I.
At least two castles have stood on the site, as well as grand English houses and a fortified town, regularly attacked by invading forces.
The Team's quest is to find evidence of the O'Neills' fortress.

Has anyone thought about having Phil Harting considered for a national treasure. After all his ancestors were among the very first people in England. That, and the fact that he is the most listened to Archeologists in England. I believe he deserves it!

A yank (errr me) learns some Irish history whilst being entertained. Much appreciated.
I really feel like someone needs to duct tape a feather onto Phil's hardhat. It's not natural that he spent so much time wearing a hat without a feather on it. Great episode! As an American who never studied any of this history in school, it sent me off reading about all kinds of things and really broadened my understanding. So fascinating and tragic, and really led into the immigration of the American colonial period as well. I never would have known without watching this!

Funny how much more interesting when we are older 😊
Way to go Phil! He always fights to find the truth and the facts based on archeology. Now, just have to get politicians and historians to follow the archeology so a proper and truthful history can be written and corrected by the next generation. Tell the truth based on science and by archeological history instead of history as told by the victors which always skews history to favor themselves. History written by the victors isn't always the way things really were at the time of the initial fighting. If you look at Irish history versus English history, the truth is somewhere in the middle as told by science and archeology. Keep doing the good job Phil!
I love learning any and all things about Ireland

I agree. I go to County Cork a lot for holidays as my mother in law has a place there. My wife's deceased father was a protestant (Gibson) and her family are still there, all over Cork. I find the Catholics and protestants get on generally, and I personally get on well with all our friends from both denominations in the village where we go but I do avoid any conversations about religion and politics. We are friends with a couple who live there that consists of a protestant Irish woman, and an Englishman; you'd think he would know better after years dwelling in Ireland but he's always mouthing off about crap Irish politics etc. when we meet up with them. In a room full of people, you can feel the tension when he does it. As an English person I take the view that if you proverbially "don't mention the war" you'll be okay!

What happens with this dig? is it just reburied or is it now marked as history, with the possibility of rebuilding it? I have visited dunganon quite often in Southern Ontario. My family 2 generations ago came from Ireland and settled in southern Ont. So I am curious about Irish history.
