It's weird to think the British Roman period was a similar time span as the 1600's to the present day. That's the period of Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Kepler, Galileo, the Mayflower, the civil war, right up to now! 400 years is a very long time yet we just call that whole span 'Roman Britain'. I imagine from the first century to the fifth, even the Romans would have lost and forgotten about dozens of forts, and even whole towns. We've had maps and records for hundreds of years in more modern times and yet we manage to misplace castles, palaces, massive mansions from just a couple of centuries ago.

The Geo-Phys team has got to be the most cardiovascular-fit people ever. Imagine trekking across fields and rolling hills for hours carrying that equipment.

Yes he does. He just loves sharing what he learns with everyone. I was always similar with my niece, nephew & cousins. It led to me instantly becoming brave & catching a big weird noisy but harmless North Texan Cicada. Freaky bug. My niece, nephew & their friends loved learning about it up close. Their dads wouldn't come within ten feet of me holding it. Nothing can beat learning about something up close. Luckily good documentaries come close. Especially since my fibromyalgia hates cold wet weather.

Some day my driveway will be called a Millennial hoard, I just went out and threw 10 coins in it. Now I will seed the fire pit area, under the deck and... well I guess my couch already has hoard status. 10 coins, that,s apparently all it takes. lol. I know, I know its not the same. What about 2k years from now when someone excavates our gigantic rubbish pits and finds all the coins sucked up by the vacuum? I want a time machine!

@@pistolannie6500 , I was a full-time teacher, which meant the week's washing was done on Fr. nights. One of the 3 children had to help (they took turns) and the evening's helper got to keep all the loose change that came out of the machine. Not one of them ever complained about having to help. I suspected my dearly beloved husband (he died nearly 21 years ago) of 'seeding' his pockets.

Mine-ull. Rhymes with Final. Got it.

I don't know why people are expecting Phil to remember an exact location in a large field that he spent maybe a week or so in possibly 20 or more years ago. Even if he could narrow it down to a vague area, I'd be astounded if he'd be able to give them an exactly location to drop a 4mx6m trench on top of.

Location on Google Earth: 51°25'24.5"N 1°41'23.3"W Not much to see in the satellite view, it looks recently planted. But the surrounding fields show lots of crop marks that line up with the area of Cunetio.

since it rains so much where these investigations take place why not bring along more waterproof tents, and, design and build a geophys cart that is waterproof. Only suggestions, as I live in dry land region of The Mallee in Australia I'd hate to work in the rain as Time Team does. I love Time Team and hope for more for many years to come.

The fact that Phil knew exactly how to get to Mildenhall in Suffolk, suggests that he went on some of the C.N.D. demos there in the early '80s.

I think the hoard is a result of the “penny pot” part of the bank being left in place because it just wasn’t worth it to dig it up when the town moved and the town figured they would just leave it to the gods and call it even. On the other hand, the nickels, dimes, and quarter pots were worth the trouble so they were retrieved when the town closed shop.

The point of Time Team was they were a test pit. Full blown digs are Not cheap and they want to know they are digging constructively? So they contributed massively to knowledge of what is out there, to be investigated properly when finances and technology allow. Whilst generating massive interest in people who would have had no idea what archeaology is!

As you can see on other TT digs where previous archaeologists have attacked sites with no definite plan and made it hard for present day enthusiasts. Time team want to leave something for future archaeologists to discover.

If you have the pleasure of visiting the east coast of Canada, especially Newfoundland you will find the accents differ from outport to outport even though geographically the may be a few kilometers from one to another.

That new geophys cart needs a big umbrella roofed over it! So much for new teck in the wet British iles.

How great would it be to dig up the complete site, buy the land from the farmer, give him a good price for it, dig it all up and make a beautiful museum. Maybe rebuild some of the buildings. Such a waste to leave all this history hidden away.

The idea is to find out as much as they can while still leaving as much as possible untouched. Exposing the whole site to English weather would destroy it for future generations, as they say on other episodes

the coin collection is curious.......how did all the robbers miss that in 2k years.....

Is it possible the coins came from a house of ill repute? They keep mentioning the price of a lady of the night, and they have yet to find industry in the area. A brothel would explain the low quality coins, wouldn't it?

When a person considers the source of the hoard, one wonders if the Romans had a toll booth for "offerings" at the conjunction of roads and the hoard was found at their secured counting house, some distance away. As "tolls" were collected, they'd be taken to the "bank" for holding, accounting and distribution to payments and, of course, Rome. The other alternative is the same, only being hidden in a buried pot, the suspicious man might think what was found was the one cent on the dollar contribution to the grand poobah's secret retirement fund, he had hidden really well under the floor, when something bad happened. History often repeats itself, doesn't it? Just thinkin'...

That was a lot of stone 'robbed out' after the Romans left.

Just FYI. There appears to be a bit of confusion. Per Time Team there are only 12 episodes. In their listing we have Potted History (Mildenhall) | Series 17 Episode 6. In IMDB agrees with Time Team that there are only 12 episodes. However they don't have Potted History at all. Instead they have Time Team S17-E07 Cunetio. Somehow the names are messed up. The two shows are exactly the same!!! @@nitahuncke5541 No. *Mick Aston* died a little after the show closed. He left before the 20th and last season. He was a rather ill man most of his life but very popular with almost everyone he knew. It's worth the couple of minutes watching, here on YT, the video of his funeral cortège.

treksez Back in 1994 when the series started quadropters and such were pretty much a dream even in 2012 when the series ended. But it sure would be a great idea if the series ever came back into production..

+CompetitiveAudio yeah, im into quads.. building 3 right now. anyhow, the technology really was not there for joe public until the nintendo wii was released.. guys figured out the wii remote with all its tech could be used to build a flight controler for a quad also more efficient brushless motors helped too, carbon also.. lots of things happen at the right point int time to make these things possible for the price point they are now. you can build a 250 size race quad for around 150.00, where it gets expensive is when you go up in size. . and now a few short years later the hobby is growing so fast.. its amazing every day i see people joing the forum who have no interest in RC airplane.. but are all about quads.. or as the media has named them and it has stuck drones.. i hate the word drone. to me a drone is something the military uses.. not joe public.. but whatever, drone, quad, multirotor.. its a fun hobby.. and if you learn to fly with out all the training wheels ( robot stuff, auto leveling/stabilizing.. waypoints, etc )its a challenge to fly.. that is what i love i guess. the challenge of flying one in acro mode.. no stabilizing etc.. just you and your thumbs to keep that beast in the air.. i figure by spring i will start a AP multirotor build.. maybe a hex, or a oct. 690 size. p.s its very cool what the multirotors have been able to add to photography. very fun hobby. im still a noob.. but its fun to get started in a hobby that is so young. its cool to watch it grow and see trends come and go.. right now 180 size race quads are very popular. who knows maybe next year it will be all about huge AP builds.. but i have a feeling the main reason for the popularity of the FPV race quads is they are more robust, they take a crash better, cheaper to build.. and you do not need a whole lot of space. if you are not crashing, you are not flying.. is the motto of flying quads.. and the sad thing is its true.. its a money pit in the long run.. as you break props so often compared to a airplane.. o well still fun. now i just need a 3d printer and ill be set for this hobby.

+Chris c My other interest is amateur radio. There are a number of 'hams' who fly everything from RC, to high altitude balloons (65k feet) and such with cameras. The amateur radio license allows us much higher transmitter power so we are able to 'view' a flight from hundreds of miles away. Fascinating views as the flight altitude of quads is lower plus hover ability gives great video opportunities... As Quads become more 'off the shelf' prices will drop as the features increase.

CompetitiveAudio hi, yeah im looking into getting a ham license for FPV stuff. i will only need a basic license for fpv. but im holding off as im just now adding FPV to my current builds to see if its something im interested in. fpv -- first person view.. you fly through goggles.. i have all the parts just have to give it a try if its something i will enjoy i will get my ham license so im legal no matter what FAA laws come . hopefully the basic test wont be to hard.. not had to take a test in a few years since college. :D i agree with you tho.. the prices will continue to drop. from what i can tell you can bet quads will be a hot seller come christmas. i always recommend the blade nano qx as ones first quad.. its great flyer, you can fly in your house.. take crash after crash.. has auto level and acro mode ( i recommend keep auto level off, you will become a better pilot quicker ).. that is how i learn to fly.. best 60.00 i ever spent.. as i crashed like crazy till i got the hang of it. heh. hope you have a great day. :)

+Chris c There's a website called QRZ.COM which has practice exams you can utilize. The class of license you will need to study for is "Technician" which is not difficult at all. Who knows, maybe the ham license will lead to further ways to spend your hard earned income LOL I've been continuously licensed since I was a kid back in 1969.

55,000? I'd be so freaking tempted to just keep my mouth shut. Except I wouldn't because of the historical significance. But oh boy that would be a nice treasure. Screw selling it. I'd just want to play with it. Just running it back & forth through my hands & count it. Then 5-10 minutes later I'd get bored & wander off. Alas I probably couldn't run my fingers through it because it could potentially damage the coins. Better to let the experts properly deal with such a big find. But until they are there and can properly secure the site from looters I'd most definitely be keeping my mouth shut about it. I wouldn't tell anyone except the proper authorities & I'd make sure I had the right authorities. With that many finds I'd ask if I could have a smaller coin placed inside a little display locket. That way I could wear it as a necklace without hurting it & it would be protected.

I DearBBC... I wish this hadn't been canceled. England has such a rich history of multiethnic cultural invasions that left a mark on its entire country, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Every country had its turn from Celtic tribes that settled there until the Roman's tried their hand at it. Sort of like the First Order...lol. & on with Vikings, Saxons, etc. I would think, since it's been 6 or 7 years since the last filming of the Team, a new family could be brought together. Matt, Raksha, Tracy , Faye & the doctor Alice Robert's heading the team. Forgive me ,as I'm sure another fan has their favs & could start this up to urge BBC. We fans can only hope! Why doesn't the BBC take up Time Team... most of the BBC history progs are rather dry, academic and far too 'war battles and weapon' focused

wellohmeeeeeee I would guess Time Team was too much "entertainment" for the Beeb.. For a program made for commercial television it was one of the best these tired eyes have ever seen. As late as 2013 Tony stated his belief that Time Team had still got life in it and suggested that after a three- or four-year absence it could make a return.. Sadly, many of the academic members, Professor Mick Aston, historian Robin Bush, Beric Morley and others have passed away. But it would be wonderful if the show's producer Tim Taylor decided to give it a re-boot as long as the formula was kept the same before the decline in season 19 and 20...Catching "Lightning" twice is always tough.

I beg to differ. It isn't a question of "dry" vs "entertainment". Aunty had been at the cutting edge of history progamming since the 50s. But having replaced "Chronicle" with "Timewatch" at roughly the same time that Channel Four came into being, even if Tim Taylor had offered them Time Team in the early 90s they wouldn't have had the money to take him up on it, having entered into agreements to provide "Timewatch" to broadcasters around the world. It has to be remembered that the Beeb operates on a shoestring unlike their commercial rivals.

Because it costs too much money to make. Imagine how cheap it is to get one presenter to travel round the country with a producer, cameraman and sound operator, putting together different 'piece to camera' exerts on a given subject and boom, with a bit of post-production, you have a history programme. Time Team cost Channel 4 a fortune to make, and once its viewing figures started to slide, down went the advertising revenue and it was the beginning of the end. These days most TV is made 'on the cheap', with our screens filled with fly-on-the-wall documentaries and 'who can bake the best cake' scenarios. It is highly unlikely that big budget TV like this will ever be made again. If the BBC were forced to do it, you'd probably get Phil Harding with his shovel, doing the whole lot as that's all they would pay for lol

You do realize that each Emperor had his own coins that circulated right? Also each new Empress. Romans widely used coins, both in Rome and in all their provinces. Hell, the local tribes in Britain minted and used coins before the Roman invasion.

Wouldn't Phil know approximately where the coin hoard was since he participated in the dig that uncovered it? Seems rather contrived on this point. I realize the show is made for TV and suspense is desirable, but we're told he's from the area and there's a photo of him digging there.

Or they left in a hurry. Nobody is certain exactly what happened when the Saxons started raiding our shores - some historians think they invaded and fought their way across Britain, others think it was more of a peacemeal settlement. For sure there is a strong likelihood that the Britons left in these towns after the Romans departed in 411 AD had a very tough time and were either as you say, killed, or they had to scarper and didn't have time to recover their haul. They may have simply buried it there in the hope they would be able to return and recover it one day, but could not do so.

@@Wally-H Indeed. The size and weight of the horde alone would make it impossible to take anywhere. So whoever it belonged to may have taken something from it before they left, as much as they thought they could safely carry, and secured the rest thinking they would return later. Besides, while I'm sure they regretted having to leave all those coins behind, the coins were of low value, and would not have been worth the trouble or risk all things considered. For whatever reason, no one ever came back for those coins. But I do think this horde and others like it from this period start more to look like that it may not have been so unusual to keep a stash of coins buried somewhere nearby as an emergency fund or savings. Even if a person's house or town got trashed and burnt down, looted by somebody, people would still be able to return and likely find that their buried stash was still there though all else was gone.
