Time bending -- 365 ways to unlock creativity and innovation | Ken Hughes | TEDxUniversityofNicosia

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Ken Hughes' work in behaviouralism has led him on an interesting journey. Ken spent a year experiencing something playful, something risky, something new that he had never done before, every day, for a year. Although it started off as a personal journey it quickly spread to those around him, in both his personal and professional life. Play, risk, creativity, and innovation is now a big part of Ken’s approach to helping blue-chip clients stimulate their organizational creativity, and by extension their innovation. ‘My passion’ Ken states ‘is to motivate others to unleash their creativity through a blend of discovery, fun, play, mischief and risks. Once you get started, it’s addictive’.
Enjoy Ken Hughes's TEDx University of Nicosia talk.
Ken Hughes is Europe’s leading consumer and shopper behaviouralist, and a global thought leader in the areas of shopper psychology, behavioural economics and neuromarketing.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Right. And when you're doing something you love, in the "flow" mental state, you lose track of time but you're completely engaged. It's a priceless feeling. When people say, "Time flies when you're having fun," it might be nice to stop them and remind them, no -- time flies regardless, but we feel happier about it when we're living up to our potential.

Simple 18: I think you can still do it. Plan to do new things at weekends. Learn a new language in your car on the commute. But a new paper on your break. Eat in a cafe you have always passed at lunch. Instead of watching TV one night write a letter to a long list friend. Really it is a life like yours where we sometimes feel lost to a routine that needs some element of TB most! Thanks for your comment

So glad that this video comes to me at the perfect timing! I was attracted to this talk by his stunning red pants 2020 and 2021 have molded me into a habitual creature, clinging faithfully to my routine--the only certain thing. But, I have feeling bored beyond I can tolerate. There is no Fun, no excitement and no enthusiasm. No Fire in the belly. Time to Change! I decide to go back to that adventurous, playful and risk-taking person before the lockdown. This morning, I did something New and I feel alive. I took a cold shower ( not as miserable as I imagined) while listening to Indian Bollywood music( my first time.) I live in New York City. Today, my goal is to talk to 10 strangers. Interacting with strangers generates Fresh (human) Energy. And tomorrow, I plan to do it again. I will keep talking to 10 strangers every single day till the end of 2021. This project got me really excited. I haven't felt this good for quite some time.

It was fun presentation ok, and discovering new things can make life more interesting. But eventualy bending time or changing the pin etc.. is not the case as by doing other things, you have to give up from your time invested in other things. So, it is not about time bending but it is having a fullfied life with stop procrastinating and trying to be open for new experiences.

I had this thought myself about a month ago. I was thinking about time and how our perception of it is dictated by how much is new or how much is subconscious and routine. Because if we are constantly doing “our routine” the events don’t hold as much meaning in our life so our mind passes over them and we “lose time” in our life. I am definitely doing this, now that I know someone has recorded successful results on what I had previously thought was just a theory I had.

Great story and speach. But time bending is not able to fit in many people's lives. Me for example..I wake up at 5.00am every day and leave for work at 5.30. I work in construction which is a very physical and tiring job where finding time and new things is not possible to do during your day. Then comes home time which is roughly 18.00 and travel time on top of that then becomes 19.00. By the time I have sat down watched t.v and had my dinner it is 20.00 it is now time to get back in bed to prepare myself to fall asleep by 21.00 to enable me to get the 8 hours sleep i need to prepare me for the next tiring day. Therefore the chance of making new and exciting joys and thrills in my life not possible. Now people may say get a new job then...but it pays the bills and keeps a roof over my head.

No,when we change circumstances without changing perspectives we only dig ourselves in deeper. There's "time-bending" and then there's "arguing-for-your-limitations", these are choices we all make every day. It seems to me that your life is the perfect "raw material" with which to conduct this experiment. If you had 15 minutes to listen to this Ted Talk, you have 15 minutes to play with something new: an idea, a conversation, a route to work, mismatched socks....

Simple, honey, you have all that time in the car going to work. do something silly in the car, turn up the radio or CD player and blare some silly song, sing it loudly in the car, and if you stop at a red light, roll down the window so others can smile. or listen to some crazy books or wear a funny shirt to work.

  • @anolds24

You raise a good point - having bills paid and a roof over your head is a priority. I wonder - are there other jobs for which you're qualified that could also meet those needs? Better paying maybe? Or closer? If not, I understand. Sometimes when I feel like time is tight, I try small things that require barely any extra time - like he mentioned - I'll take a new route home, go for a quick jog as soon as I wake up before jumping in the shower, or even just try a new exotic food next time I'm at the grocery store. I suppose that's what he means by bending time. Not so much forcing a wormhole into existence for extra time where there is none, but even just inviting innovation into that list of everyday stuff you're already doing. I'm terrible about this myself, even though I understand I get the same 24 as everyone else. But when I do it, it's a game-changer for the whole day!

  • @kenhughesIE

    @kenhughesIE

    9 жыл бұрын

Aunti Laura And there you have it - it is really more a mind-shift in yourself and your approach to the every day than it is a 'list of extra things you need to do'. The initial experiment forces you to 'work that list' but then you re-program yourself to simply make the most and best of every moment

How to bend time: To make time go slower and more productive: Do something unique each day (something you've never done before in your life) Try this for 365 days. Keep track of the unique things you did each day for a year. If you want time to go faster- then make routines and stick to the same same routines, everyday same things so life is very predictable and no surprises.

Probably won’t be a popular comment but I love routine and predictability. In my view a boring life is a great life. Nevertheless an interesting take on life.

I think a mix is great and perhaps also depends on each person's personality. Some people get stuck in routines and don't want to be. Others enjoy them. Each to their own I guess. Tx for your comment and reminding us of.the other side

obviously time bending like he describes it is not possible. but the idea he based his concept on i do agree with: it is not the time you bend it is just the memorys. you first have to understand what time is. time is just what we discover, as things do not happen at the same time, but time itself is neither linear or something else and what exists is only the moment. so if you discover the day you are living in the moment and that is probably even close to something linear but if you look back you are most likely to remember a few things that you have done and these are things that are something new or something interesting. something that you would remember. so you can either have memorys 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 or just a few like 1 2 3 4. what i am trying to say is, that if you now have more things happening that you are likely to remember and you look back you are seeing more things than compared to just a few memorys. -> and time is just that things are happening one after another so time looks like it has been longer just like the combination of the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 is longer than 1 2 3 4. this is the same thing you experience when the first few years of your live feel longer than the rest of your live. it is just because if you look back and add these things in a row it seems to be longer because in the first few years you have discovered more. but like he describes it, you can not bend time.

I think you are right that while you're on holiday time goes by extremely quickly because you do so many things you don't even realize how time goes by. But I think looking back you will think "wow I did this, and this, and that, so many things, it really was a long week of holiday!". It is not about how fast you feel like time is going by in the moment but about how much you did in the time looking back...

Kind of - I certainly love that movie but it is more than just saying YES to things that come your way. It is about looking for NEW things regardless of your situation. About re-framing your world. But YES -watching that movie I always recommend to others as a catalyst and energising start!

Hi there. It's a mindset really. Yes some big things cost money but there are lots of small everyday things you can do that cost nothing. New play, acts of kindness, learn a language on the Internet, meet new people... don't let a barrier (like money or time/job) stop you. look for the 'new' in the everyday... that's the real magic

weirdly, i find people with less opportunity and less resources MORE open and less risk averse, more willing to try new things, possibly due to necessity? Something those more well off could and should learn from. So yes, good comment.

Absolutely - a great movie God! Only issue with that movie is that he said yes to anything, everything, even perhaps unhealthy things for the character. That was a movie so of course it all worked out for him. My point is very much the same - certainly open your eyes to all the opportunity and learn to re-wire a YES attitude, but find the balance somewhere. That said, I do LOVE that movie! Thanks for the reminder - must watch it again!
