3 tools to become more creative | Balder Onarheim | TEDxCopenhagenSalon

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. “Growing up makes us less creative. Therefore we have to re-learn creativity, and luckily there are multiple ways to do so,” says Balder Onarheim, PhD.
In everyday language, ‘creativity’ is often used in relation to artistic creation. But amongst scholarly researchers it is acknowledged that creativity is one of the most crucial human traits.
Balder is PhD and creativity researcher at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the founder of the Copenhagen Institute of NeuroCreativity - an institute devoted to understand and disseminate knowledge about the neurological underpinnings of creativity.
“Creativity is not just about art - it is one of the most crucial human traits. It lies at the heart of innovation, thus it is not a superficial skill but a necessity for human survival,” says he says.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    1. Continuous practice: try to challenge yourself and come up with completely random words/ideas. 2. Prime your sleep: use your sleep to try to be more creative. In dreams you don't have any rules so before sleeping, think about the idea you want new thoughts about in your dream and when you wake up, take notes. 3. Randomeness: make any random piece of informations you get, useful for creative ideas. How can you use that information.

I use Wikipedia to compile a list of words/phrases that are relevant to whatever I'm working on, then I put them into an online cut-up machine similar to William Burroughs' technique. It spits back a paragraph of mixed up words, mostly all jargon, but a lot of the time they inspire new connections I hadn't thought of before, which I can then run with however I wish. It becomes quite addictive to experiment with disparate source topics.

I’ve noticed that even artists, after a while their creativity becomes somewhat stagnant. Yet, we just refer to their music, movies or painting as their “style”. As a digital artist myself, I have to make a conscious effort not to become too lazy and predictable in my work, but constantly push my comfort-zone by thinking outside of the box.

Great talk. I've used the sleep one for years with good results, not all the time but often. Glad to see recognition that creativity is SO important and essential in all aspects of life/work. I was ridiculed as a child and it wasn't till I was around 40 yrs I realised I was very creative ... just not in the type of art my teacher had laughed at.

Interesting! The first book to take readers inside the experience of creative inspiration hits bookstores tomorrow (3/6/2018). It's called, "Deep Creativity: Inside the Creative Mystery," and is the culmination of a 30-year exploration into the heart of creative inspiration. It stresses the idea that creativity is not just thinking outside the box but living outside it.

Brilliant. Can't wait to see more of your research! If I was to make a single observation, I would offer that this is vital research to the solution of some very protracted problems we are having as a species. If I was to make a second one, I'd say be careful using the word "destroy" (14:25-ish). Perhaps a better word is "inhibit"? It seems trivial but the defeating influential potency of the word "destroy" may not be (it would seem) what you want to affirm in someone. Such an exciting talk. Sorry this got by me for 6 years!

omng! I loved the nine dot solutions by kids! I would never never never have thought of them! It reminds me of the physics teacher that put this question on a test: given a barometer, find the height of the school building. Of course, the students knew that air pressure (measured by the barometer) gets lower as you go higher. They said to measure the pressure at ground level and then on the roof. Find the difference and use a math equation (given in books) to get the height. But here are CREATIVE- and funny - answers: 1. Find the school maintenance guy and offer to trade him the barometer if he tells you the height of the building. 2. Tie a string to the barometer, stand on the roof, lower the barometer to the ground. Then measure the string. 3. Drop the barometer from the roof and time its fall till it smashes to the ground. An equation gives distance. Can you think of out of the box answers?

Ha.. love those answers.. sorry Nate.. I can't think of anymore besides what those kids saw. Nate, your example of the different answer from kids, highlights that by asking many people about the problem on hand is also a good way to problem solve/think creatively.

Hey guys if you guys want to take it a step further with the random words once you're good at it .You create a three word link of random words including the first association word and once you have 3 random words create an image in you're head or a scene combining and using all three random words. If you want to go further and beyond then when you see the images in you're head and it seems generic or common force yourself to make it completely random by making more exaggerated or goofy looking even making look creepy this a pro tip by a drawing artist

So this is late but I'll answer anyways. His advice is to come up with random *unrelated* words quickly. Usually when trying to come up with random words they will have some connection (to the previous word or your surrounding). E.g. Toothbrush, Teeth, Mouth, Eat, Food, Pizza...... Instead you should try to come up with something like this: Toothbrush, Tire, Australia, Table, Rain, Children, Glass.....

Hi Joyce, yeah I'm mumbling a bit there.. The first tool: Train your brain to make 'random associations', by challenging yourself to produce a chain of words where you quickly come up with a list of words - where every word has nothing to do with the previous word. I do this every night while brushing my teeth, but you can do this whenever you have a spare minute! Happy cognitive training :)

Chocolatier Since most people don't understand Math and aren't highly creative, so it's understandable, but not obvious. To add, creative people look further and see more than the average person, so it's more than understandable to me that most people would be concerned with the supposed obvious, because most people aren't creative.
