THIS IS MY LAND
This is Timbuktu, my home land,
Where the children are mourning from gloom,
This is my land, Timbuktu «the Maliba»,
The land of love,
The land of warmth,
The land of dignity,
Here is my Nation...
Why are we crying?
Why are the children crying?
Why are the young crying?
Cause of unfairness,
Cause of violence,
Fearing the future...
Here is my home
Stop crying
Cause no matter what, Timbuktu will remain

The video starts out with life in Timbuktu before outsiders come and take over the land. There is a family of three enjoying time together, scenes of traditional fishing and cattle herding, both genders enjoying time in conversation, etc. The outsiders come into their land and the women are forced to dress a certain way, the singer in her new required dress is being whipped, a man is being buried alive, another man has light shining on him so he can repeat what he is being forced to repeat, the family of three now just consists of the saddened mother and, at the end, the African statues are being blown up and destroyed--a representation of the final removal of the culture and ways of the people. Read about the history of the real Timbuktu (Tombouctou)--one of the world's first and oldest universities and about Mali's recent history--particularly in the north.

That scene where the converts/arab muslims were destroying the African carvings is a symbol. When will we Africans free themselves of Christianity and Islam and realize since their entrance into our lands they have been destructive. My ppl are equally suffering under Islam in the form of Al Shabab but our erosion of our indigenous culture goes back centuries. One day we will be free of it all, after all if I a former muslim black African can now see it for what it is perhaps more will soon too. Africa malin dow, one day soon

Timbuktu Fasso !

Greatness is the result of hard work and favour, but greatness that is found, had already passed away. May the ancestors guide and protect us from the oppressors, strengthen our culture among our kind, awaken in us a great wisdom, so that we may emerge out of the darkness, illuminate like the sun, reclaim the glory of our lands and our ancestors, and never shall we depart from it.

Why did I NEVER learn of Timbuktu in any history class? This is wonderful! We were taught the African slaves were just "naked savages!" WE WERE the savages! They were modestly dressed subjects of Islam who went to schools and universities. We paraded them around naked in our slave markets simply to try to justify our "superior" attitudes. If learning about the culture of Timbuktu they were kidnapped from were taught in our school system -- a decent amount of humble pie spiced with shame would be in order.
