Timber Gate with Shopbuilt Hardware

My Premier Project Plans: paskmakes.com/premier-project...
My Free Plans: paskmakes.com/free-plans/
I built this Timber Gate with shopbuilt hardware to install between our garden and paddock. It needed to keep our goats and ducks out of the garden and wide enough to fit the ride on mower through. The joinery was made with a homemade handheld morticer. I made the hardware using ball bearing hinges welded to the homemade strap hinges. This is the second gate I've made in this way and the other is holding up perfectly after 12 months of Australian conditions.
I hope you enjoy my first video.

I forgot that these older videos didn't have voice over. You have a truly impressive body of work.
it's 23 of october 2021 and i have watched all of the videos on this channel, big thank you Neil for all of the content! Hello from Russia!
Still one of my favourite builds of yours :) Such a pleasure to re-watch all of your work.!! Thanks for sharing and all the best.!
Certainly hope the goats appreciate all the hard work that went into their new gate.

by the music he selected playing it sounds just like the goats are singing. i’ve watch many of his videos and Pabst dost great work, but i don’t know if i remember music as horrible as this LOL The gate looks awesome of course. As usual
4 years later, and still one of the best youtubers on here, your vids are just great! I stumbled across you from Jimmy Diresta and saw your japanese wood shaving videos. Since then I have now gone through your entire back catalog and I am yet to find a video that doesn't make me want to pick up my chisel and hammer and make something.
You are my new favorite! You really are such a talented and creative person. There seems to be nothing you can't make and I love your video production too. Very professional looking and it must take you quite a while to edit them. I'm going to have a cup of coffee, sit back and starting from the beginning of your channel. ~Dolly
And that was the last one, only found out about your channel 2 days ago and I already watched them all. Top content.

Hello Neil! Your first video! And it already shows everything that has made you a subscription millionaire after 5 years: Talent as a carpenter. Talent as a locksmith. Talent as a technical developer (e.g. domino milling machine). Talent as a filmmaker. etc. etc. I wish you continued good health and success! Greetings from Germany! Wolfgang (subscriber for 4 years).
the closing mechanism is just brilliant, simple and elegant ! the whole build is very nice !

When I saw the goats I was shocked (more like awakened) I was watching thinking this beautiful gate was going onto some sort of secret garden or at least a house back yard... Great work mate!
I’m a little late to the party but the gate latch is brilliant
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I have been looking for that latch idea for MONTHS and haven't even known it! You rock!

Good looking gate... a nice design and really fine craftsmanship. I like the locking system and your handcrafted hinges. Your videos are a pleasure to watch!

I was playing with the idea of making videos of my hobby builds. Wanted to see how the best maker on KZread started… and well, you place the bar high Neil!
Thank you so much for your channel! I'm glad to see your first video 💪
That's so cool! I love working with clay. Would have loved one of those!
Great work! So many details of wood and metal working
Bloody aw-sum, you are a true old school Craftsman, I hope your young fella can keep it going, well done
Absolutely stunning!
Brilliant!, design, construction and practicality in use - first rate. Thanks.
I just discovered your channel (yay quarantine, right?) with the kumiko/resin coffee table, then saw your bladeless fan, and I must say... Sir, I am hooked. *sips coffee and watches all your videos*
I'll have to have a close look at your mortiser, I would find it very useful, and I have a small router spare.😊 It might be worth sealing any exposed end grain with super-glue, or similar, to keep the rain and bugs out.
Brilliant video mate
Very nice. Thanks for sharing
There are no limit to your creativity, you are definetely my favorite maker, vive 🇦🇺 from France
You're definitely a Jack of all trades, love the way your brain works, mate! Love your work from Texas. Do you have a video on your domino jointer?

So beautiful!! (I'm kinda watching one of your videos each day - pleasure moment of the day) Loves to see the process and your backyard looks great and love the animals! Never seen spotted goats in my life. And what is that wood? Probably something typical from Australia? Also enjoyed the dominoes falling part. Excellent video overall.

Thanks for the support, I'm very grateful! We are lucky to have such a cool space with the animals too - the goats are miniatures but they aren't that miniature. I'm not sure of the timber species, I don't find it easy identifying the different eucalypts, they can be very similar.

@@PaskMakes For some reason I think that would be a Sydney blue gum (Eucaliptus saligna). I've done some work with that awesome timber. Nice to work with and finishes beautifully. Anyway, your gate ended up awesome. Nice work, mate
Solid! :)
Hej! Du är i paritet med dom absolut bästa på KZread. My mechanics, Koss, Abom m.m. Tack!
Yes!!!! Really enjoy watching(the way you think!) and your videos...Your mortaiseuse(in French) instead of 1000euros on a Festool Machine would really interest A LOT OF FOLKS...cheers...rr in Normandy, Fra

that dowel making jig is so simple and elegant. thank you so much for the idea. Is the ozito biscuit joiner good value for money or do you have to modify it to be useful?
Great video! Is there one on making the jig for the router to use as a biscuit joiner you see in this video?

Thanks! Sorry, I don't have a video on that. :)
Very cool, liked the gate and the latch, good to see basic tools use to make grate things. Question what was the doe thing that you put on the sanding wheel before sanding?
Great result, I love it when exterior woodwork is built well and with great care. What was the wood you used?
@PaskMakes
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm really not sure on the species, it was from a pile of rough sawn mixed Australian hardwood I have - it would be some kind of Eucalyptus though.
What wood species is this? Looks fantastic! Also I asked you before if you'd do a shop tour...now I want a tour of your property! You are living my dream!
@PaskMakes
4 жыл бұрын
The wood for this came from a bundle of Australian mixed hardwoods so I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it would be some kind of gum. I may do a shop tour at some point in the future! :)

@@PaskMakes Yes it is Blue gum originally from England. It was brought to South-Africa and planted on the farms to be used in the mines as pillars for support underground. It is a tough wood that can withstand the harsh temperatures of Africa. It is mostly used for decking and outdoor furniture in SA. The downside of this wood is that it messes up your table saw blades and all other tools as can be seen on the burn marks on the wood in your vid.
I might be way off here but by the look of your land and the sounds of the cars going past I reckon you might be around the Narangba Morayfield area on Oakey Flat Road. Just a big guess.
@PaskMakes
7 жыл бұрын
Yes thats a big guess Sam. ;) We are on the sunny coast not a million miles away from that area (about 45 minutes) so it would look similar. We don't live on a main road but the cars that do go past really do sound out on the videos. I wish I could eliminate them.
have you ever used Merbau wood if yes any hints on working with it as i want to carve it
Love this gate for sure. Just curious if you think that the latch mechanism is for sure goat proof? As that I've raised Registered Nubians, before I've seen how much they put into thinking of how to figure out their next escapes.
@PaskMakes
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks William! It's been installed for a while now (about 18 months I think) and there hasn't been any escapees yet. ;)
Do you have the plans or video on how to make the homemade dominos and mortiser. Nice project.

Видно что у мужыка руки ростут откуда нужно) красавчик)))
How thick is the metal you used? How far down did you notch them? Good idea. I'm looking to make some.
@PaskMakes
7 жыл бұрын
From memory I think it was 5mm and I notched down about halfway. Thanks.
A beautiful gate! But what is the device where you have milled the long holes for the flat dowels? That I need synonymous, which seems so super to function! Guilty my English is not very good. (Google translator) Wouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu ! ! ! !
Man, that looks awesome! So no tempering of the latch was needed to make it springy?
@PaskMakes
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No it has enough spring in it as is - this is the second gate I've built like this with the same latch design and the first one is now about 3 years old and still going strong. :)

Jarrah hardwood. Pain in butt.
just noticed.......over there on the right you did a video of it....lol.
Wait!!! What??? I want to see how you made the domino mortiser.
Hi Neil, Great video, during your timber gate video i note that you used a home made festool domino like tool, did you make that yourself or was it another video you saw that you inspired you to build this one ? very interested in it anywho i look forward to your respons Cheers Chris L d:-)

Adding music is difficult because you're never going to please everyone - that's one of the reasons I haven't used music for a while now in my videos. Glad you enjoyed the build though! :)
That music Neil..........glad you moved on LOL
Toll. Aber ein Riesenaufwand für das Tor zu einem Ziegengehege... - Das braucht Liebe, Langeweile oder beides.
Past makes first video
I'm guessing it took the goats about five minutes to open it themselves...
The music was.......... alright.
Love the gate and incredible workmanship but am not a fan of the music choice.
You know you're now going to have to build a fence to match the gate, you know, especially if you have a wife. She will insist on it.
@PaskMakes
7 жыл бұрын
haha! The fence is new and she likes it the way it is! Eventually I'm going to build bigger gates like these for the front of the property.
Had to mute the hideously repetitive sound track (music is too strong a word). The gate kinda outclasses the fence it is attached to.
