Tilting & Extendable Welding Table Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For the most part I work alone in my shop and it can get a little difficult to lift some of the heavier pieces of steel or big projects onto my welding table. So I decided to build a welding table that would make it easier to get the heavier items up and on the table, hence the tilting table idea was born.
I also work on metal doors that are sometimes wider than my standard 4ft wide table so I designed this table so it could extend if needed.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video.

    Hi Doug, I love the table! I know just what it's like playing with heavy stuff on your own. It makes you more adaptable but sometimes a little bit slower getting stuff done. A suggestion - Keep an eye on your Pillow Block and Castors. The bearings may get flogged out if you drop heavy loads on the table or when you are beating some metal into submission. So I made my table using "Scaffold Base Jacks" (Threaded Bar / 6 tonne capacity)as drop down legs, but used two nuts on each leg to distribute the hammering load that they copped. I've also modified some of these to make adjustable stands in my workshop. Google will show you heaps of these and I'm sure your mind will buzz with the potential.

    Trim the bracket on the bench top where the hook attaches and install a small pulley and then run the winch rope through and re-hook at the bottom. That slight addition has now doubled the winch's pulling power by doubling the length of rope being run through it. As we learned in Jr. High (Work = Force x Distance) ...

  • @trailerparkcryptoking5213

    @trailerparkcryptoking5213

    Papa Jon no actually it cuts the weight on each cable in half, if double lined. Therefore the winch is pulling half the weight compared to single line pulling the full weight. Draw a free body diagram of the force system, college physics.... lol

    That's a pretty unique and cool design... I would suggest a bunch of 5/8" holes in the top in a grid pattern. This would accommodate the strong arm fab table clamps and accessories.. i have holes in my welding table and made my own clamps from cheap harbor freight clamps... need to still make stops, spacers, and other accessories... but you cannot believe how fast and convenient it is to set up projects with this system.. my holes are on 2" centers. 4" centers would work well too. If you had spacers to accommodate different offsets in 1" increments it would be sweet...you could use a mag drill and an annular cutter to make it fast and easy to drill the holes.. I know you will enjoy having a killer weld table.. it makes life much easier.

    Thank you for the video Doug . Nice table. Doug you have to treat yourself to a new Mig welder and use gas. A lot better finish and very little cleaning up. I know money is tight, but also get a plasma cutter. Both of these save time, and as we know time is money. I know you probably are already going to that as soon as you can. But just saying the sooner the better.

    It's funny you mention getting a new gas welder. I've told myself now for over 20 years I'd get a gas mig when my little 110v box dies. This little beast just won't die! However it is time so I've been shopping around between projects and will probably make make my purchase soon. And I actually have a decent plasma machine and am real pleased with that.

    Very cool build! What do you use it for? I’m a novice and am taking a deep dive into the world of welding fabrication. My first guess is you use it too get to extra welding positions easier. Like if you use a jig to weld say headers/extractors for an engine. Keep in my mind this is the first video of yours I’ve seen. I do like your use of the sticker as a template to dremel through your logo. 🇦🇺🤜🏼🤛🏼🍀🍀🍀😎🤓

    @@ArtfullyRogue drill a hole in every corner, weld in a nut. Cut pieces of threaded bar to length and on one side weld on a small piece of tube (so you can use that to turn the bar) screw it in the nut. And now when you turn them all the way down you have “brakes” for the table. You could weld on a washer at the other end of the threaded bar once it is screwed in the bottom of the table

    Thanks very much for sharing. Will the folding legs need a pin or locking mechanism so they don't get bumped out of position? I like the design. Unrelated to that, I want to ask why you placed the pfc's with the flanges outwards rather than in. Is this an aesthetic choice or are there other reasons like the plug?

  • @ArtfullyRogue

    @ArtfullyRogue

    Actually the weight of the table holds the legs tightly in place. I have to lift the table slightly to move them. Pfc's? Are you talking about the pillow blocks? If so, it was all about access, the grease fitting and the set screws

    Personally, for the tilting feature, I'd have used small hydraulic cylinders, or possibly even just pneumatic cylinders.

  • @ArtfullyRogue

    @ArtfullyRogue

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think if I had the knowledge of how to utilize cylinders, I would have also gone that route. Now that the table is built, I can now take the time to learn more about them and add them when I'm ready.

  • @edwardlance2379

    @@ArtfullyRogue Very simple really. Depending on your needs in terms of power (it seems you don't need tons of force) a pair of small bore cylinders would work great. There are online calculators that will give you the power of a cylinder based on its bore and pressure of the pump, but for an example, a cylinder with a small 1.5" diameter bore at just 1500 PSI is capable of about 2500lbs of force. I would mount one on each end of the table, horizontally between the two vertical, backside posts with a 90 degree cantilever arm. Since tilting the table down requires less force, arrange the cylinders so that they pull for this operation (there is less force pulling than pushing due to the rod taking up cylinder bore space). The push stroke can then be used to tilt the table back upright where the most force is needed. You will need a pump and a motor to drive it, a hydraulic valve and a pair of double acting cylinders. A 2" bore double acting cylinder with a 24" stroke is about $80 on Amazon. A small pump would be about $50, control valve around $70, and a small motor maybe another $50-$75. You only need a pump capable of around 1000 to 1500 PSI. Here's an online calculator that can tell you the power of a cylinder based on bore, rod diameter and pump pressure: www.baumhydraulics.com/images/calculators/cyl_calc.htm
