Tile Fail....Really Bad

So.... Absent is the cement board or ditra.... Thinset was barely applied and didn't bond to tile....Subfloor is weak particle board....Yeah these are some key ingredients to make sure a tile job will fail in 2 to 5 years.
Its not uncommon I hear folks say "Im just gonna put the tile right on the subfloor." I say okay but It will fail eventually. It is wise and prudent to use well established procedures, especially with tiling.

Often times the thin set mortar can be easily scraped off/down, and that is the first thing that I would try. I think that regardless of going tile or laminate the floor either needs scraped or leveled, and it will probably always be cheaper to have it scraped no matter how hard it ends up being. Although if it's really hard to scrap it might be a good idea to put that money toward ripping it out and getting an OSB/Plywood subfloor. From there, you're probably right that laminate is going to be the cheapest way to go. Even after scraping it, sheet vinyl isn't going to be an option, it is just not going to be perfect enough. -a tile guy
