by the way, when a big cat goes on its back, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is submitting. It's a fighting tactic - they can use all 4 of their paws to defend themselves and they waste less energy fighting as the other one is forced to circle around to try to attack. Male tigers do that when they fight. This is not dogs....

Fighting from the back allows the cat to bring its back claws into play. The rear legs have more power and therefore can do more damage. Watch two house cats fight, and you will see the same thing.

Many people have no idea how much of a cheat code a tiger is...they can use both of their paws at the same time, uses their hind legs in a fight, swim and also climb trees.

The local zoo years ago had two tiger cubs (brother and sister) born to a mom in captivity. We saw them real young hassling the mom who just wanted to sleep. We came back later when they were adults (or nearly adults) but still very young and playful. We got to see them fighting and BOTH were standing up on their back legs fighting. It was incredible.

I had two cats; one male and one female. I still have the female cat but the male is gone sadly. But he would come up to her randomly sitting and chilling, poke at her and then run away. Leaving her frustrated and annoyed. He liked getting a reaction and would sit and stare at her planning the next time he was going to poke at her. Other times they would sleep right next to each other cuddling. It's a strange dynamic and cats are sometimes very strange creatures; whether domestic or wild they are so similar.

What's happening here, although it looks intimidating, is a lot closer to play fighting than actual full on violence - Animals kept in captivity tend to display arrested juvenile behaviour in contrast with those in the wild: so this is kind of akin to mild playground bullying. Basically, Tiger no.1, standing up, is trying to assert dominance, and the one on it's back, Tiger 2, is resisiting, but passivley. At the end, Tiger 1 is satisfied they've made a strong enough show of it, and moves on. Its like if your older sibling tried to wrestle you down when you were kids: you're not activley trying to really hurt one another -but someone *Is* trying to show the other who's boss, and you don't necessarily like it so you try to put up *some* kind of fight to at least save face, even if you don't come out on top. The funny thing is that you can also observe this kind of thing among housecats, as well as Tigers!

Notice at 1:06 the standing cat approaches the waters edge. All land animals know better than to fight with your back to a body of water. Even the art of war states this. In this case though its a puddle. But the tiger still breaks its line of sight(a rather big deal) off of the laying cat to notice and fix this. I just find it super fascinating how when it comes to combat most humans follow the same principles as even a 400lb big cat. Just with a much more cerebral level of thought.

Zoo's shouldn't exist in the first place. If we cant give them the place they need in nature, then that just means the time that they need to be gone has come. It doesnt mean animals need to be executed, eaten or harmed in any way, but imagine someone did that with you. Encaging you, making you an attraction and harrassing you through showcase.

Everyone acting like the female was not being submissive are so dumb. She was clearly in a defensive mode but still acknowledging that she is in fact the weaker smaller cat so she chose to throw herself on her back to maintain some sort of advantage against the much larger male tiger.
