I say this to all my friends but Shizuku and Seiji are the healthiest depiction of a relationship I’ve seen in cinema, media, ever. To me, being with someone means supporting each other in achieving individual dreams and how the relationship adds to your life rather than becoming it.

Am i the only one who is kind of tired of all this "healthy obsession"? I know this might sound weird but fiction doesn't have to be like reality, i want to like problematic fiction and couples.

Maybe I think to much but Ive always seen Sam and Ashitaka as romantically involved. "Youre beautiful" and her shocked look? He gived her the necklace, they try to protect each other and in the end they discuss their future and how theyll see each other in the future.

It's also interesting to watch the original japanese version, due to some kind of mis-translation or story change for the english version of Princess Mononoke in sub and dub format, its misinterpreted by a lot of people that Kaya is Ashitaka's sister or not ronamtically interested, but in the og version, the obsidian knife is seen as a engagement piece from Kaya since its presumed they were to be married, it makes the fact that he gave San the knife a bit more meaningful.

I had fun watching this video, and everything BUT I need to say something: Miyazaki’s whole point was to portray a true expression of love, beyond romance. I like to think that the “couples” are just people with a deep and meaningful bond.

I have to politely disagree with Umi and Shun. From my point of view, it was well developed since they were both mere teenagers who suddenly thought they were siblings when they weren't, not adopted, not blood-related. Their love relationship grew organically and it was realistic how they confronted it + their difficult problems. There were moments of stubbornness between both of them which I found pretty humane, to be honest. However, this is just my sincere opinion.

Ghibli films seem to present quite a range of different types of couples, from clear romantic pairings, to more platonic friendships, to those that are more open to interpretation. With all that variety it's honestly pretty hard to rank these pairings, but I'd say my favourites are Sophie and Howl, because of how both of them help make each other into stronger and better people. Worst one is absolutely Taku and Rikako from Ocean Waves, it's a very toxic relationship and I don't buy them being in love at all. Plus, there was a clearly superior couple right there with Taku and Yutaka, but I digress

hayao miyazaki once quoted; “I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live - if I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.” -that is why I feel that (most if not all) ghibli movies have very special romances that genuinely and cannot fully be described in words since their relationship is far more deeper than a romantic one. perhaps similar to the concept of a 'soulmate'? on a side note, shizuku and seiji my beloveds ಥ_ಥ they definitely are iconique! whisper of the heart is my favourite ghibli movie out of all time so this may come off as a bias but their relationship is just pure bliss. both are a major inspiration to one another in their lives; two teenagers dreaming and working hard (in their craft) who naturally found their way into each other's arms ! they do indeed greatly complement one another and both are so lovely, so cute and so wholesome to watch

Also Seiji doesn’t want to be a violinist, he wants to be a violin maker🎻

From Up on Poppy Hill had the sibling line in it to make a point of the war, because stuff like this happened all the time back then apparently. They are not siblings, Umi's dad took him in to protect him but they had no relations whatsoever. They just wanted to make a point about the fact that people at the time lost or gained family members this way, for us to learn how the war worked. Miyazaki talked about it once.

It is my fav Studio Ghibli movie of all time, because it's so real and raw. Because it was a Studio Ghibli, I kinda knew that they weren't siblings, but registering him under his name is so sweet. And I know that they're known for a lot of magical or fantasy things. But this was prob one of the few movies that had like no magical element and was more realistic that made the movie sweeter. I also liked the maturity of the characters as someone who is starting adulthood and looking into more serious and sweeter stories because sometimes we need that.

Both this and Whisper From the Heart are great love stories, from times when marriages were agreed upon at earlier ages and casual dating was frowned upon if not outright prohibited. Cinemonika seems to miss the point in both movies of them meeting and falling in love, which is too bad.

Shizuku and Seiji are definitely iconique for me, I love how they inspire each other to pursue their passions. Also whether platonic or romantic Kiki and Tombo are just very cute.

I personally always interpreted haku and chihiro as being romantically involved with each other. I cant exactly pinpoint why it’s different to the other couples in the questionable section (because I agree ponyo and sasuke and ashitaka + San do not feel romantically involved) but something about haku and chihiro’s dynamic gives me innocent young love that’s more than platonic 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think compared to the other platonic couples they have genuine chemistry and while aren’t exactly romantically involved in the movie, have the beginnings of a romantic coupling. In my head they are the same level as howl and Sophie, just younger and without the chance to have their romance evolve out of childhood innocence yet

Hayao Miyazaki stated himself that he was skeptical with stereotype that because a woman and a man are together therefore a romance must occur between them. Also yeah there is Platonic and friendship love not necessarily romantic in most couples and I think it's better than most Hollywood movies that try to promote unessesary rom. So not actually questionable in your board but more like "Platonic love/ friendship" 👍

i agree with you with every one except san and ashitaka, san went back to the forest at the end but ashitaka promised that he would visit her whenever he could, i also just think ashitaka always loved san from the day he met her. San's mother could tell that Ashitaka wanted to marry her(?) or something along the lines of that. I also think ashitaka was the only human san loved and cared about. I just really love them they deserve to be happy :)

My personal favorite Studio Ghibli couple is Kaguya and Sutemaru from The Tale of Princess Kaguya. They are absolutely perfect for each other and Kaguya spent her whole childhood with him, but Kaguya’s departure to becoming a princess cut their connection short. Kaguya is stuck in a palace away from nature where she has to have an arranged marriage with a dumb older man, and Sutemaru has to resort to a poor life as a thief and woodsman and start his own new life and family. The sequence with Kaguya and Sutemaru flying together is one of Studio Ghibli’s most touching and beautifully animated scenes of all time, and it always makes me sob my eyes out. I just wanted Kaguya to run away and be back in her true home and with her true friends and family again (the ending scene with the departure to the moon made me cry even harder).

The ending turned me off so much. Sutemaru was literally willing to abandon his wife and child for this girl from his childhood he hadnt seen in ages. Really damaged his character in my eyes. And kaguya being forced to leave and forget all about her life on earth because she desperately called for help while being sexually assaulted was also something that turned me off. Cant get behind the movie the ending pissed me off too much smh

i dont think u understand umi n shun's relationship at all. from up on poppy hill is one of my fav ghibli movies so im a lil biased but u made it sound like umi n shun were still related to each other in some way after finding out theyre not blood related and they werent at all? they werent adopted or even grew up together i suggest u rewtach the movie n rly realise the circumstances that were placed for shun to b mistaken as umi's sibling

I liked Toshio and Taeko as a couple! I thought Taeko was dealing with negative thoughts regarding her childhood (inferiority to her sisters, struggles in schools, verbal and physical abuse from parents, etc), and that she dealt with that by separating her contemporary self with her childhood self. However, when she goes to the countryside and meets Toshio, she "brings along" her childhood self, and Toshio helps reinforce that concept and helps her deal with that "bringing along" of her old self which is likely a bit more healthy than just shoving it aside and not acknowledging it.

I agree with the ocean waves one😭 the two guys literally have more chemistry with each other than either of them with the girl

seiji and shizuku are my faves!! I feel like the movie really did their relationship justice and had great pacing which is a thing i look for in a relationship being depicted in a movie!!

i think that's what i love about ghibli films, we don't know, we shouldn't over analyse it, we just vibe. For all of the couples there we know that they love eachother as people and that should be enough.

Kiki and Tombo in Kiki’s Delivery Service, San and Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke, Chihiro and Haku in Spirited Away, and Shizuoka and Seiji in Whisper of the Heart are all top tier for me. Just so cute!

haku and chihiro's relationship is so open ended and open to interpretation, i always thought people seeing them romantically involved is kinda... odd? since they dont really give eachother any romantic or crush type feelings towards eachother, just because haku wants to saves her and theyre both protective of eachother doesnt mean theyre romantically inolved, when haku is revealed to be the river god it made more sense to me and i interpret it as more of an spiritual connection, he's been there for her even when she didnt know who or what he was, and the bond is so strong it surpasses romantic feelings. besides, miyazaki himself said he didnt like how 12 year old girls were presented as only looking for love in the media so i dont think he'd add a romantic subplot to the movie in response to that, but that's just my opinion

I have to politely disagree with Ashitaka and San, honestly I think you should've put them in iconique because they are so cute together AND Ashitaka would say things like ''you're beautiful'' when he was severely injured, the way that he would describe her and talk to her when he was about to die just shows how much he loves and cares for her. Honestly I've always interpreted Ashitaka and San as being romantically involved with each other because of how they interacted with each other. When the movie ended and Ashitaka went to build iron town and San went to the forest, I always imagined them visiting each other when they have free time. I don't know if this is just me but honestly Ashitaka x San is one of my favorite studio ghibli ships ♡ ♡ ♡

Howl and Sophie! I love them both in the movie and in the book, though they're very different.

I believe in the scene where Haku in dragon form falls down to the boilers room Kamaji answers to Lin upon her asking what is going on here, that they are in love! (Chihiro And Haku) Whilst that can be a loose comment or proper statement from Kamaji, I do agree that it makes sense. At that age it is easy to develop crushes on other kids your age. I used to have a crush on any guy that would be somewhat sweet to me when I was in grade school! :D Chihiro and Haku were bonding throughout the whole movie since he was helping her escape and showing her comfort and kindness by offering her a shoulder to cry on when she was deeply saddened. So perhaps she had a crush on him? Still those were all gestures that could also be interpreted in a platonic matter but still undeniably cute! Wether they ended up together or not, they would make a cute couple aswell as cute friends (:

I would probably be the only one to say this... But I feel i should defend shun and umi! I think they had a really beautiful dynamic between them as they were both quite withdrawn, shy people who really loved each other. I think that the sibling thing linked to the fact that they both had unresolved issues from the past like with umi when she dreamed about her parents and shun needed to clarify his past so he could find out who he was. I also think although it was a strange obstacle, it made the bond between them stronger as they could finally overcome it. ♥️

Agreed! The sibling plot was there to show how war could affect a family, it also shows loyalty and sacrifice (the three men in the picture and Shun's adoptive parents). I liked the story and the conflict resolution and I think Umi and Shun work really well as a couple.

I feel the same regarding Chihiro and Haku, I feel that they’re more platonic although the movie explicitly mentions Haku being Chihiro’s “boyfriend.” I think that while Chihiro is too young, there is that potential for her to be involved with Haku romantically in the future.

I have to disagree with umi and shun ranking. They are one of my fav ghibli couples 💕 but great video. Thankyou for the list

I fully agree with your opinion about from up on poppy hill; the story was so weird? First I really liked the movie, the story about her father and the dynamic between the protagonists but when they suddenly included the sibling plot I was like noo. Even though it turned out they're not related, it kinda destroyed the good vibes I had in the beginning. But maybe it's bc my grandparents agreed to register a child with their lastname as well and I'm more familiar with the situation, if they really had been siblings who had feelings for each other I'd have been half-okay with it as long as they didn't pursue a relationship (just bc they didn't grow up together, if they had then that's the biggest NO sign), if they just went for it I'd hate it with a passion 😅

Agree the Umi and Shun thing (From Up on Poppy Hill) was clunky and awkward. But there is a dissection elsewhere (and which I think does makes some sense), about there is a lot about the complex world post-War Japan that was emerging and the related stories and symbolism (may be not for everyone though). I do also think the romance between the two is genuine. The story around both their growing awareness of each other and the moments that build the chemistry is there (and for, certain in ways that is mroe realistic than many of the others, including the popular ones). The film is historically situated and so is less fantastical than others. So I have to differ from your perspective. But I also do get that the sibling thing did make it a bit harder to digest. There could have been other ways to complicate matters. But then again, it was based on a 1980 serialised Manga comic story. And that 1980s Manga story was closer in time to the period the story is set and likely reflects the complexity Japan itself was going through.

Sheeta and Pazu are OTP, and they are both just such good kind, strong people to the core and they find such wholehearted support and trust in the other throughout what is a really shitty situation and they are, at the core of things, in each other's team. They are the type of pairing that no matter what happens, even if they were platonic, they will be there for the other through thick and thin, and god that's everything I want to give and receive, im so soft for them

Also I really think that most Studio Ghibli relationships are basically boiled down to "because I knew you, I have been changed for good" , they are just people finding support in another, walking together for as long as their path in life brings them together. It's not romance, in most cases, but it is definitely love that helps you grow and heal, and that is VERY sexy of Studio Ghibli

it was purposefully queer-coded !!! it ended the way it did because of when the original book was written. at the time, any queerness would’ve been censored (during the editing process). because of how they changed the ending, it’s kind of awkward to think of them like that. but i’m sad it wasn’t changed:(

Thanks for this vid. For my part, I like Shizuku and Seiji a lot a couple, maybe simply because I like 'Whisper of the Heart' as a whole so much. Still, I think they are both great characters and if ever two teenagers could decide to get married and still make it work, it would be those two. On the flip side (and maybe this is controversial), I would put Jiro and Naoko in the "Questionable" category myself. Jiro undoubtedly loves Naoko, but 'The Wind Rises' strongly implies that he puts her health at risk because of his obsession with completing the Zero plane. I read the story of Jiro and Naoko's romance as being a metaphor for the larger human costs of Jiro's designing planes.

I would like to make some clarification to the movie "From Up On Poppy Hill" NO. They are not blood related. Shun's father and Umi's father are very close friends.. Umi's mother explained and says that Shun's father had been killed in an accident on a repatriation ship and his mother died from birth complications. Yūichirō father of Umi then registered Shun as his son so he could avoid being placed in an orphanage. While Umi's mom did feel terrible for Shun, she couldn't keep him because she was already pregnant with Umi, but another family who had recently lost a child themselves took Shun on. I really got upset everytime people bring the incorrect information that they we're siblings like hello? Have you finished or watched the movie properly? It didn't bring justice for their romance / relationship.

I think Chihiro and Haru are really romantically attracted. In the movie we hear the weird guy with spider arm saying after I don’t remember what question ‘’this is the magic of love’’ or a thing like that, so I think Chihiro is not really just a good friend with Haru I think it’s really love 🤔

the seiji and shizuku one hurt a little ngl

Kaguya and sutemaru is also a couple that could have been touched upon. Theres not a lot there but what is there is precious!!

A really interesting video, it's so usefull to have a different point of view on the subject!! Continue these type of videos, it makes me really happy ^^

A really cool video! I think you ranked the couples pretty well, I would maybe make some small changes but the three in the first line are very iconique indeed haha. I've seen someone mention The Cat Returns (and I love that movie so much) - I have to say Yuki and Prince Lune are very adorable

To me that last scene from Whisper of the Heart was partly an act of teenage innocence, but also a proclamation of hope against the seemingly fleeting nature of their relationship. With Shizuku pursuing writing in Japan, and Seiji violin making in Italy, their dreams are leading them in entirely different directions , and it’s hard to see them lasting. Paralleling Grandpa Nishi and his love Luise, they seem doomed by circumstance. That last scene is them saying they’ll make it anyway.

9:18 well... I want to disagree here "From up on the poppy hill" is a somewhat historical drama, it describes Japan in post-war era. High schoolers want to build new society, women are finally able to be ambitious and even study abroad! But the aftershocks of war are still present. That's why Umi work extra hard while still being a child, why Shun and other boys are so politically proactive. While things are going this way, Umi und Shun can't even build their first relationship, because past is messed up and makes their life more complicated. So the whole siblings-or-not thing is not just a trick to attract audience. (Also I would put Umi and Shun in tier "Beautiful bond", I like how gentle and straightforward in the same time they are.)

All of this yes!! I feel like people who's only opinion of their relationship is "it was weird" really didn't digest the scenery so to speak of this movie, the whole story and the rest of the plot work wonderfully on pair with the are-they or aren't-they situation, and even if then they can't look past the almost related aspect of them two and don't like the couple I still think the rest of the movie is very likeable.

I’d be almost tempted to put Marnie and Anna on here, despite, y’know… Even though it ended the way it did it’s kinda hard to deny that it seemed romantic throughout most of that film. Then the ending happened.

Now about the incest, they are not brother and sister. Umi’s father was killed during the Korean War and so he wasn’t able to clear the misunderstanding. Shun’s father had died before the War leaving Shun with no relatives and so Yuuichirou Sawamura (Umi’s father) registered him as his son but he couldn’t keep him as his wife was pregnant so he gave the baby to Akio Kazama and his wife as they’d just lost a baby and they were more than willing

I'm sure Kamaji said Chihiro was in love with Haku when she was trying to help him. I do think they are a romantic couple, more than just platonic❤️

Omg i literally just binged it all last night ot was SO CUTE!

Umi and jun , Shizuku and Seiji are definitely iconic for me, and there are comments that explaned why so that's it. But about Arrietty, that giant guy was not interested in Arrietty in a romantic way this is obvious. Just imagine you're a child and you find out there are small tiny cute humans living in your house, and they are about to be eliminated, he had no purpose to live, but the way this small family was courageous and didn't give up on living despite all the difficulties they go through, gave him purpose to live, why are they strong enough to do that while I'm not? We shouldn't look at everything on a romantic way. But the one who I think Arrietty will end up with is the small human who helped them to escape, and he obviously was blushing and trying to make Arrietty happy 😊 and I think they are cute 🥰

I feel like ocean waves is one of those movies that you didn’t get for the first time watching it but it gets better I promise!!! I think the reason why people don’t like it is that their affections for each other were expressed in a super subtle way. But personally, I think it perfectly encapsulated the fragility of teenage hearts!!! (in Asian cultures, having relationships in high school is sorta discouraged so this could be the reason for their attitudes?)

Literally the past month I’ve been binging on studio ghibli and this is popped up on my reccomended, which is just... perfect✨💕

I would Love to see more tier list videos! ………..Or maybe a Ghibli movie tier list video wouldn’t work? Isn’t everything top tier?? 🧐

AGREE ON EEEEVERYTHING, although I would say I absolutely love ashitaka and san and as an aro/ace I see platonic love just as amazing as romantic love, and the fact that even tho they loved each other they recognized that their needs and responsibilities where more important than their relationship then procede to go each on their own way makes a beautiful ending imo

My picks. No order. Iconique: Shizuku/Seiji, Ashitaka/San, Pazu/Sheeta, Chihiro/Haku, Howl/Sophie M&D: Arrietty/Sho, Ponyo/Sosuke, Kiki/Tombo, Jiro/Naoko I guess: Taiko/Toshio, Oso/Fukuo, Porco/Gina Questionable: Taku/Rikako, Umi/Shun Plz no: none

I would rank Sōsuke and Ponyo higher. While their relationship is entirely non-sexual (duh), it's clear that they love each other, and I don't have any trouble seeing them getting married when they grow up. Heck, by the end of the movie they move in together. Shun and Umi are a fine couple. They bond over a common goal, and they are not related. That makes all the difference: *_they are not related._* Really, though, I agree with you on most. Two of these movies I haven't seen, but I now know what to add to my Netflix queue.

I believe the director of Whisper of the Heart said that Seiji’s proposal to Shizuku was for we the audience’s benefit, to let us know that marriage was ultimately their endgame.

The fact that the rankings are symmetrical to each other is so ✨satisfying✨

lets normalize platonic love. i never thought ponyo and soske and chihiro and haku were couples. yes, they loved each other a lot, but not romantically. plus, all of them are children
