Tidy Afterthought buttonhole
TIDY AFTERTHOUGHT BUTTONHOLE
TAB technique by Agasalhos e Bugalhos
You need:
- crochet hook or duo needle (I used Addi Duett knitting needle/crochet hook)
- detachable markers, scissors
- tapestry needle and strands of the same yarn of your piece
This method of afterthought buttonhole allows you to knit your piece and plan and create the buttonholes after you finish it.
A big hug

Great technique! Thank you.
So glad I “met you” regarding your beautiful Concentric Circular Shawl on Ravelry! Looking forward to seeing all your posts! Thanks so much, this buttonhole is a real winner. I am about to do the edge on the “No. 4 Vest and may try this technique. 😊
Sandra, youve done it again! Another fabulous knitting idea!! 🎉❤😊 I am ALWAYS unhappy with conventional buttonholes, as mentioned by other contributors here, so I'll be making my buttonholes like this from now on 👍👌❤️🧶 Thank you, SO much 😊
This is terrific.
Amazing! Thank you so much 😍
This is great! No cutting or worrying about unraveling with wear!
Thanks. This arrived in my IG feed at the moment when I needed it. Came to KZread to watch the full explanation. It solves a problem I’ve been dealing with. Thanks! It’s genius.
That’s genius Sandra! It seems a much stronger buttonhole, normal ones get very loose and stretchy. I’ve actually used some of those techniques mending knitting, so it all makes good sense. Well done!
Thank u so much. ❤
THANK YOU! My little baby sweater buttonhole didn't look quite right! Your wonderful video took me out of the blues! Time to send this little gem off to the new parents!
I am making my first cardigan and missed the instruction to put the first buttonhole in the waistband. I can make this solution work. Thank you for sharing/teaching!
thank you, this is very clever!
Amazing! I was sooo let down by the size and loose usual yarn over, knit two together buttonhole for a baby jacket and looked for a way to make it stronger and more prominent and here you are! I am SO grateful! This will be my new go to!! Much love from Norway :D
Thank you so much! I've always had problems knitting buttonholes in the right place. Now I don't have too! What a wonderful video!
This actually looks neater than the yarn overs I usually use! I'd probably not use two different pieces of thread to secure the stitches, but one and move up the ribbing and then back down to secure the one closer to the edge (if that makes sense).
Это гениально!! Огромная благодарность и уважение вам!! ❤❤❤
That's absolutely perfect!! Thanks for sharing 🩷
Thank you for the great idea and even better explanation! I have a few sweaters I made without button holes because I didn’t want to bother with them, but I can add them now!
This is genius! A cardigan I knit years ago needed an additional button, and the buttonole I made using this technique both looks and works a lot better than the buttonholes I originally made while knitting the button band. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the clear explanation! 🌷
Absolutely brilliant!! Thank you!
As coisas giras que nos ensina, obrigada! A beleza de muitas peças está na perfeição dos acabamentos!
Sandra, this is brilliant! I knit a cardigan a couple of years ago that I wish had buttons--I'm going to use your technique! I love your patterns, btw. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Love this pattern. Thank you for all your wonderful patterns ❤
This is amazing technique. Love to learnt it. Thankyou Sandra❤
Thanks for sharing this! I definitely have to give this a try. I accidentally (maybe my stitch marker fell out?) missed adding a buttonhole on the button band. I didn’t notice it until I was sewing on buttons!
Wonderful to know. Wish I had seen this yesterday. I fought and fought with 5 button holes in a sweater.
Fantastic!
Genial idea, sobre todo cuando se hace la tapeta en vertical a la vez que se teje. Es cuando más me cuesta calcular el último ojal.
Genius! ❤
Lovely buttonholes!
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing.
Amezing 🎉
Thank you ! This is such a great way to do them !😮 which patter is this lovely cardigan ?
🤩🤩🤩
Hello and thank you for sharing your technique 😀 Question however - With my buttons (23mm, cardigan for myself), I am trying your technique - Despite using more stitches, the buttonhole is too thigh. Any idea of what I do incorrectly? Thank you kindly 🧶
I would omit the double knots, they seem unnecessary. The thread will hold well enough if just woven in and it would look much more tidy.
Double crochet hook can work on this as well
In italiano x favore..grazie
If you did not bind off your button band before making the buttonhole, couldn't you simply include that stitch from the hole in your final bind off? I think this buttonhole technique is genius!
