The key to Yu Yevon and Yunalesca's plan is that there was no plan. Zanarkand had no warmachina and were being crushed by Bevelle. So Yu Yevon decides, as a last ditch effort, to convert the people of Zanarkand into fayth in order to power the greatest summoning ever: a dream Zanarkand where they could live in peace and Sin to protect it from any and all warmachina. Doing such a big summoning, however, destroyed Yu Yevon's mind, turning him into a mindless parasite that hides within Sin and continues the summoning for all eternity. Yunalesca sees that Sin has become a mindless monster that wont stop and approaches the survivors of Bevelle. In exchange for creating a church that venerates her father and the art of summoning, Yunalesca would sacrifice her lover and herself to create and summon THE FINAL AEON, which would then defeat Sin and end the problem. It's only once Sin comes back that Yunalesca, now an unsent, realizes that Yu Yevon will just instinctively latch onto the final aeon and turn it into the new Sin. With machina gone and the church already set up, they can't think of any better solutions and decided to just perpetuate the system they came up with out of fear and despair.

@@WowlxX Additionally yes everybody in Zanarkand died of either the war or "died" when they became trapped in the Fayth. If you ignore X-2, Tidus and Jecht are both people who existed in Zanarkand before its destruction. The reason Zanarkand is destroyed when Sin shows up with Auron is because that's how Zanarkand was destroyed - Yu Yevon lost his mind and Sin was uncontrollable, indiscriminately destroying everything. It's implied the Dream Zanarkand is in fact just a time looped pseudo-place. The reason nobody's ever seen Zanarkand or been there is because the church teachings tell them not to, and also because they're afraid of Sin who is known to be there. That's why the end of the Summoner's collective Pilgrimage is always the ruins of Zanarkand. As for how Jecht left, presumably the same way that people at the Farplane entrance in Guadosalam can see dead relatives. It's not much of an explanation, but presumably the pyreflies are able to "summon" Jecht and then Tidus all by themselves...maybe because Jecht is a well-known blitzball player of yore and blitzball fans love him so much it works as a summoning? Eh.

The summoned Zanarkand is a hodge-podge mess of hundreds of people's half-remembered memories of others mashing with people's self-perceptions of themselves to re-create a city. There were bound to be be inaccuracies. The ultimania confims this. Tidus is mostly people's memories of a star blitzballer (shuyin) and some other people's messed up memories of him layered on top. The Dream Zanarkand is the Chinese Telephone version of Zanarkand, made worse for the fact that Shuyin was not a part of the Fayth and therefore had to be created only from other's memories of him.

Plague's takes on Final fantasy are extremely questionable. FF8 he managed to step away from too many land mines by focusing on the overly convoluted combat system. But this FF10/FF10-2 video is showing he's gonna go down the SpoonyOne Path of bad Final Fantasy takes. It's very obvious how his misunderstandings of the games are gonna lead to him having really poor quality takes on games like FF13 and FF15 in the future.

Spends 41 something minutes on building up and explaining the Blitzball event, explains the rest of the entire story and its sequels in 40 seconds.

"They also hear Yuna, The daughter of the last, greatest summoner who defeated sin, and the woman who Tidus is ----ing!" I'm trying so hard to not crack while I'm listening to this at work.

And I still love X-2 even if my dad always walked in on the massage scenes while I played with my blitzballs

The best/worst thing about this game is how it’s framed as Titus telling “his story” to the other characters. Imagining them all shooting each other uncomfortable looks while Titus goes into graphic detail about his daddy issues and creepy lusting for the girls always puts a smile on my face.

I think what makes it at least elevated over things like 13 is that while on similar levels of stupid, 10 still knows it is a game and isn’t afraid to let the player cramp its style while 13 doesn’t want to let you off a leash lest you start to ignore how “cool and flashy and deep” it is

Personally I feel the game didn’t really know what the hell it wanted to be. I grew up with it, and I’m still dumbfounded by how Titus is just lame compared to everyone else. I hate to bring up Chrono trigger, but at least your main character is dictated by your actions.

I've always hated when people say that final fantasy was straight fantasy until VII. Technologically speaking, there is very little change between VI and VII, except VI didn't have anything on the same scale as Midgar.

FF has had wacky hyper technology appear even before VI, the Lunar Whale is a fucking spaceship that happens to somwhat look like a whale and is capable of easily travel to the moon and back, sure it's powered by magic but that's just how tech is in this series most of the time.

@@jariu9612 Yeah, that's what I'm saying. People usually like to talk about how 9 is a return to the more straight fantasy games in the series, by which they mean stuff like 4, 5 and 6. Except that 9 is way more fantasy than any of those. I would call it nostalgia for something that never existed, but one and three (and maybe 2, I know very little about it) were more fantasy than 9, even if they were way more obscure.

You're right! Final Fantasy 1 literally has "Castle in the Sky" style robots, and 2 has an airship Star Destroyer.

Sin (Jecht) destroyed Zanarkand bc he wanted to give Tidus the desire to kill Sin. Jecht was still conscious and partially in control of Sin, which is evidenced in a couple different scenes in the game, and Jecht wanting Tidus to kill him is referenced in the cutscene before the final boss battle.

I would have listened to at least 2 more hours of disjointed rambling ngl

yes he is just a old man version of guts, Jecht and Yuna's dad got eclipsed. Auron went back for revenge and got killed. He crawls back down the mountain half dead and is found by kimahri who he tells to go and raise Yuna before he dies. He then comes back as a unsent. Also kimahri keeps this all a secret through out the game. I always took the fist bump Auron does to kimahri;s chest at the end as a acknowledgement of him both granting his dying request and a thanks for not rating him out.

That part always bothered me. Them being an underdog is one thing. To have never won is just silly In fact, the Aurochs are mostly decent when you're able to play Blitzball. Letty and Jassu have decent stats, and Datto moves so fast at higher levels he's ovwrpowered In all the times I played X I never once replaced anyone on the team, not even Botta and Keepa who aren't very good Tidus alone makes them overpowered with his Jecht Shot. I think the lesson is that Wakka was a terrible captain, and Tidus, the jock, turned them into a real team

Datto could've used "sleep shot", or "wither shot", on the invicible goalie. Maybe they were on endgame levels with blitz, and they reset when Tidus became captain.

The only reason they trained is so that Walka's last tournament was a challenge, and the last time Yuna saw them play they were good, her going off to kill herself and all. This meant when they actually played well I imagine they caught the Sykes off guard in two ways 1:yuna bring in danger should have made the team not play. 2:The Arauchs should have been way more trash than they were. In other games and promotional material they just laze about and play blitz as a hobby. Wakka doest push them, neither before Yuna's pilgrimage or after sin's "Defeat", so no he's a shit captain. Hell in the next game he pulls the team from the league so he can use them as free childcare!

I always called him Tie-dus since the world is mainly water and I figured it was a play on the word Tide, as well as a reference to the biblical character of the same name.

Thank you plague, for putting to words why it is important to beat the Goers. They deserve the humiliation they get throughout the season. For those who don’t know, Plague saying it’s a game you’re meant to lose is an understatement. He went over the fact that your team has like half the stats of the goers for that game, but (I’m sure I’m not just wearing a tin foil hat here, but I might be) the game’s rng has it out for you that game. It fluctuates in a +/-50% formula for most of the actions (a shot with 10 power could end up being anywhere from 5 - 15 actual power) and that shit ALWAYS favors the goers that game. Also you can fail getting the jecht shot, which is pretty much the only way to reliably beat that game, so if you fail getting it, you either have to load a save from like an hour before hand for another shot at it, or basically beat the game to try to get it again. Also ALSO, there’s a layer of badness that everyone forgets about blitzball: on the default setting, you don’t have control of your own movement on offense (you never have control of defense). You have to switch to the right movement option, which could cost you your first possession if you aren’t quick enough. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head, aside from the al bhed having a way better team than the goers, especially the goalie. He remains consistently good throughout late game as far as I remember.

Half of this video was incoherent rambling, and the other half was an insightful dissection of the world historic lore that backdrops the game's story.

The junction system, the GF. Dont try to use magic at all because it will decrease ur stats. Leveling up ir parties is a bad idea because the monster become stronger and stronger as you level up.

@@annedrieck7316 Huh? I think you are mixing up games. Junction system and GF's were in Final Fantasy VIII not Final Fantasy X. Magic decreasing stats must also be Final Fantasy VIII as well. And monsters don't become stronger and stronger as you level up in Final Fantasy X. They are at a set type of level when you reach a new area. Are...are you trolling?

I love that at 24:50 Plagues annoyed explanation about the goers matches TEDUS screaming through a megaphone like a tinfoil hat in the middle of a town square.

The Zanarkand Tidus is from is a dreamscape. The spirits that inhabit the statues, which anchor them to the physical plane, maintain the dreamscape. Things can be manifested by pyreflies to give them physical form. Jecht was brought from the dream to try to end the cycle. He didn't succeed, however Auron used Jecht's now Sin body to interact with the dreamscape and get Tidus. Tidus has a connection to Jecht which directs Sin's actions and can be used to make Sin weak enough to enter his body and face Yu Yevon.

Can.... Can we appreciate just how deliciously verbose that description of blitzball and the jetch shot was? Honestly I loved the concept of Blitzball and would have loved them to really flush it out and make a sports spin off game for it.

Yeah, they really could make a whole standalone game out of blitzball. Just change some of the core mechanics for the modern era and you got yourself a game.

Not because of you personally, but because, with me as a 43 year old man growing up watching generation after generation of games, you speak so much truth and it hits _like a fucking truck_ .

That was the hardest takedown of the Goers I've ever heard. I loved it.

I'd argue Sqaull is up there, he's a gigantic Prick (early on) who suffers from imposter syndrome as the game goes on, until he finally gets the reason people believe in him is does genuinely have talent and its not just a fluke. Its just shame his game is tethered down by the Draw system and obtuse form of leveling (IE YOu shouldn't level, you should draw, and card enemies) And some overly complicated and stupid twists like the Orphanage

If Auron literally rode Sin to Dream Zanarkand he would have needed to swim at some point, but only Tidus, Wakka and Rikku can do the swimming battles in the game. Maybe Auron doesn't like getting his sword wet unless its whisky.

There's a part in XIV where you visit a city that's basically a new take on Zanarkand, except with a much better explanation for the logic of the weird simulated society living in it.

Indeed. At least we know the writing will continue to be in good hands into the future with Ishikawa reprising her MSQ writing role after Shadowbringers. As far as final dungeons go...they better bring their A-game in Endwalker because Amarout - both story and gameplay wise - is a REALLY hard act to follow, let alone surpass.

Plague, my dude, this is a masterpiece. I'll be coming back every once in awhile to hear that amazing Luca Goer rant again.

I love that it feels like the vast majority of this breakdown is you over analyzing blitzball and your own psychosis for revenge against the duchebags known as the Luca Goers

My favourite part about the Luca Goers is that the girls of the team have the hots for the Aurochs

I never played FFX, but hearing about it always bring me nostalgia and reminds me back when Spoony wasn't depressed.

"Yuna crys about the aeons dying even though they're just pyreflies." Well here's the thing: Tidus is just pyreflies. Even if dream Zanarkand is stuck in in some kind of timeloop, Tidus isn't. The major line of progression of the story is that coming to Spira changes him. So whether he's actually alive or not, is there really a difference? The line between life and death is already very blurred. The aeons aren't just summons but are the souls of the people interred inside the statues. So they have to be destroyed to prevent Yu Yevon from reviving Sin. The first Sin was probably summoned by Yevon himself, but instead of being destroyed when that initial Sin was destroyed, he'd worked out a plan so that he could possess any aeon that subsequently defeated Sin and repeat that as a cycle indefinitely. The price of this is that the Yu Yevon we fight has long ceased to be a human soul or possess any kind of personality. It is a mindless construct that exists only to continue the cycle. This is Yevon's legacy: to check the folly of man through endless strife and keep them from ever developing weapons or summons powerful enough to destroy themselves in the kind of war Sin was built to end. The people are united against Sin as a common enemy (like what Garou plans in OPM.) This cycle is modeled after the wheel of Samsara present in many forms of eastern myth and philosophy. It is the wheel of birth and death wherein whatever arises must eventually perish. The calm is held by the common people to be an escape from the cycle, but the big reveal of Yunalesca shows that it's actually just another part of the spiral of death. Dream Zanarkand can perhaps be considered nirvana since it is free from the normal effects of the cycle. Thus Tidus' journey to Spira represents a fall from grace or being cast out of the garden of Eden. The point is that not only do the aeons need to die, their deaths are equivalent to a person dying. Any Aeon possessed by Yu Yevon that is defeated is lost forever, as evidenced by the statue of the final aeon in Zanarkand. ...This doesn't actually happen because both the aeons and Sin mysterious reappear in continuations of FFX's storyline, but this is what was established before FFX-2 Thematically, there can be no end to the cycle. Sin's existence is essentially ontological and mankind will battle with impermanence forever.

I like how Kimari and Auron are friends but they never talk to each other. So unless you read supplementary information, that chest pat he gives him seems very random. Also Tidus doesn't react much to kimarhi which means in zanarken had all the weird races what do hypello women look like? Was there ever a hypello guardian? Do non human summon look vastly different? How do summoners choose their guardians? Can a summoner be a girl and six badass dogs? Okay I'm rambling, what I do want to know is why does seymour assume the ronso live on a snowy mountain with no buildings, and why does he assume that the entire species would be on that mountain and that he killed them. And why did the party believe him? They know there are ronso's all over traveling the world. Hell you can fast travel to luca and see a full team of ronso three dudes two females and some random ronso civilians. Is Seymour actually braindead?

I dearly hope that in the decades and centuries to come, Plague's semi-coherent vitriolic ramblings are documented and studied like avantgarde art.

I have no idea what I just watched but I had a good time so that's all that matters.

None of this is to discount anything Plague said, because he's right. It absolutely makes no fucking sense and the game is full of plot holes. I enjoyed the video and just figured people out there might also get a kick out of the explanations SquareEnix tried to give for the plot holes if you weren't already aware. I know I did. So, Dream Zanarkand is a physical place that has been summoned in a location that is only known to the Fayth and Yu Yevon (and by proxy, Sin). The reason they explain in-game that Sin returns to Dream Zanarkand is that, unlike previous Final Summons, Jecht had a physical connection to that place and he maintained some consciousness and control when he became Sin. He was acting on his final desires whilst he was still alive, to return home and see his son again. That's what drove Sin to go to Zanarkand. As for why Sin attacked and what happened to Dream Zanarkand in the aftermath. There was an Ultimania that explained that Sin has a base instinct to attack large cities and machina, which is what activated and took over once Jecht moved it there. Auron brought Tidus to Sin/Jecht and then took him to Spira. Upon leaving, the Fayth simply re-summoned it, so it remains as we last saw it only without Tidus. "Riding Sin" is accomplished based on the principle that Sin is simply a mass of pyreflies, which is essentially matter in this universe that is released from people who die and can be shaped into any physical form. It's sort of a full-metal alchemist philosopher's stone idea. Auron and Tidus are comprised of pyreflies, so the explanation given is that they essentially "assimilated" with the physical entity of Sin. Auron is unsent, so he maintained willful control over his form and reassembled himself at some point after arriving in Spira. As for Tidus, I imagine Sin/Jecht released Tidus in a manner similar to how Sin Scales drop off of him. The people in Dream Zanarkand apparently started off as summons who were representations of what the Fayth remembered. But, as time went on, they apparently were capable of having children and they became "real" in a sense. And that's the explanation as to why Tidus and other inhabitants aged whereas other unsent like Yunalesca maintain the form they did when they died. As for Auron, I've got no fuckin idea. My headcanon on that would be so as not to draw suspicion from Summoners or associates of the Yu Yevon faith who recognized him. After 10 years and a battle with Sin, it'd be weird if he looked exactly the same. I inferred he was in fear that they would try to perform "the sending" on him before he accomplished his task based on how he avoids the far-plane, never answers people about "where've you been?", and tells Rin to drop the subject when he talks about how he was in disbelief in how someone could just get up and walk away from the injuries he found him with the next day. Anyway, great video man. Hindsight really is 20/20.

I remember my brother telling me how he'd play X-2 in the living room and our grandpa would give him a disappointed expression upon seeing the game in action on the TV. Also, there was an article for the game in either a April or May 2003 issue of US Shonen Jump.

Plague describing people, creatures, and things in his playful Plague way always makes my day.

FFX was the first big game I played during the covid lockdown, and it hit hard for me. The stupid nonsensical story makes some sense on a first playthrough, and theres something nostalgic and fun about an old game that has a convoluted story alongside really fun gameplay. Thats why RE4 and MGS3 are some of my favorite games. I remember being sucked into the culture of this new world and actually relating to some of the characters. Wakka was a totally believable dudebro who helped you for no reason and even gave you a goddamn sword out of the goodness of his heart. Hes like the lovable himbo neighbor i never had. Then theres his flirtacious thot of a sister and the town popular girl valedictorian and her sexy cat friend. All of them going on an adventure was a really heartwarming story to play through while the world burned. For fucks sake, even the cringe laughing scene really hit hard when we started to realize we wouldn't be opening by Easter. My favorite part was the main villian, who when he first appeared i actually said out loud "hey look its defiantly not the main villian". Lookking back, nothing anyone did makes any sense, but ill be damned if it wasn't a hell of a ride along the way. This game was my escape from Covid, and I played through so much of it that the two are synonymous. The grinded through leveling my skills and weapon augements so much that the final boss was done in 5 minutes. I can't even listen to the Zanarkand theme without tearing up anymore because I'm reminded of such a difficult time. Then I played X2 for a few hours and it was such otaaku kawaii cringe that i uninstalled the game and played Monster Hunter World for the rest of the year
