Lin chose to film this song this way because he said he wants to show that as a songwriter and someone performs his songs, the world would see the performer on the stage but what he would see is the person/environment that inspired him to write the lyrics. He literally just brought us to the mind of brilliant writers like him

Interesting. I just figure he did it that way because he pretty much had to, given that unlike the stage show, they are using two actors, as opposed to having Vanessa & Alexandra's characters played by the same actress (which is what the stage version does).

“You don’t need a music box melody to know what I mean” almost made me cry the first time I heard it. I totally relate, I grew up always loving the arts especially dance but my family never was into it much at all. so once I got a car I finally started taking dance classes and kind of got into different community dance teams, performances and shows. It was so exciting I loved it so much but those 5 years it was very difficult always felt like I was choosing my dance teams over family... it just really tore me apart inside. I was ambitious purely dancing for the joy, highs and focus it gave me, but it was wierd when my family members who haven't seen me for 3 months just disapproved my absence. It took me awhile but I think I know how to express the artist in me and balance the relationships that are most dearest to me or rather how to not over guilt myself or how to communicate to them better.

I’ve had the same experience. I think it comes from the vigour and pathos that Susan’s character conveys to Johnnys character and that carries to the viewer. You can see a grimace on her face on the previous line when she says “Baby be real you can feel again.” She’s fighting his emotions that have closed her off. It’s such a powerful and beautiful piece of acting and music. I LOVE this rendition!

Alexandra Shipp AMAZED me in this movie and especially this song. This was truly one of her best roles, and I didn't know she was such a vocal champion- able to do a toe-to-toe duet with Vanessa (known for her stellar singing) and power through with such raw emotions and crisp belts. I think that’s the point. I think that Lin wanted to find someone who could play Mimi and have her be Susan instead. Throughout all of this movie, you can see the different connections between RENT and Jon’s world. You can see how he could’ve made a character like Mimi based on Susan, for instance. You can see why Angel gives Collins a coat. You can see why Mimi was suddenly sick with a fever by the end of the show. Then again: In the first Broadway production of “tick, tick…BOOM!” the first Susan was played by someone who was Maureen in one of Jon’s RENT workshops, if I remember right. So it depends on the production and which way they want to go with the character.

The other thing genius about this: Both actresses are performing period, EXCEPT Hudgens is performing as a stage actress enjoying the expression of emotions for the sake of the musical, while Shipp is performing as a non-actress expressing herself through song. This song is so fantastic and such a cathartic climax in the movie - how brilliant and symbolic is it that Larson is only able to write the song when he gets out of his own head and starts listening to his loved ones again!
Jon Larson deserved the world. He loved and appreciated his friends more than anything. This was a fantastic movie start to finish.

Honestly I liked this more than In the Heights. I think the numbers were well done and the cast singing was stellar. I had no idea Garfield could sing before this, but with that said I get it because this musical didn't get commercial fame, but it's a nice precursor to what eventually lead to Rent.

the song being the song Larson had the most trouble coming up with but ended up being a masterpiece ballad is simply amazing!
Making this a duet was an inspired choice by Lin, especially with these voices!
Alexandra Shipp’s voice is achingly beautiful!
“Defenses are not the way to go, and you know… or at least you knew.” This chorus is SO beautifully crafted. I know in the film we see Jonathan lose so much because he’s blinded by his obsession to create something he feels will give him the recognition he deserves… and while he does, he pushes away his love and his friends. Andrew sells it so beautifully. Everything about this song is amazing. The fact that you can tell Jonathan Larson wrote it for Superbia due to lines about the screens, yet it fits SO WELL in the modern era, the musical was way ahead of its time. But you can also tell that he took so much personal experience from it just from what we see in tick tick boom… its easy to write a song about your own frustrations in a relationship, but it is a monumental task to write one about your own shortcomings, and one that is from the others perspective at that. The fact that Lin directed this so well, having Susan sing with Karessa because he KNEW how personal that song was for Jonathan. Having him be transported to the rooftop where they talked, and him knowing that this is what she wanted so badly for him to understand. It’s beautiful… it just makes me so sad knowing that Jonathan never got to see his dreams pay off. He’s truly a wonderfully creative human being who deserved so much more than what he was given.
the film itself, jonathan larson's story, lin manuel's inspiration to make this film, as well as everyone's acting makes this film highly underrated. honestly deserves more reception.

The most brilliant thing about this scene is how it perfectly visualizes what was already implied in the stage show. My favorite part
The way she sings 'for you i would do anything' ... this song still makes me cry. i love this movie so much.
0:10 is the smoothest transition that goes so well with the sudden softness of the song
this is shot so beautifully and the song is gorgeous. Lin-Manuel is extraordinary.

Lin Manuel didn’t write this song, Jonathan Larson did before he wrote Rent. But yes Lin Manuel directed it very well 😌

@@uhuhuh1966 yeah i know! he's incredible too, so sad he didn't get to see how far his work went :(
Where's the LOVE button for everything to do with this film and song @?
I loved everything about this film ... this piece generally the whole thing. I cried so hard on this one specifically, I couldn't believe what it evoked from the first note on. Before it's too late everybody should realize what they have before they lose it. Production-wise it really makes me think ... those people listening to Vanessa in that room were already so amazed ... they must have known how the final product will be assembled. But Andrew did they film him hearing Alexandra first and then Vanessa cause reliving this twice (or who knows how many times) like that from these two amazing artists ... this was astounding in every Signal Sense.
This was an absolute showstopper. I’m not familiar with the original musical, so wasn’t expecting the song but it feels like it just comes out of nowhere. I loved the way in the swimming scene he’s getting little glimpses of this song coming to him and then at this moment it’s like it strikes him who the song was about without even realising it, the work Lin Manuel does to show that realisation was really well done and Andrew’s reactions are so true and honest, he really sells the realisation and the fact he now can’t throw the thought of it being Susan You can tell that his song is breaking his own heart now he’s hearing it back, it’s like now he’s hearing his own music coming back to him he’s now seeing her perspective
I just finished this masterpiece and I was so blown away. Then I see that Lin Manuel directed this! I should have known!
THIS FILM IS SO GOOD. Is there anything Andrew Garfield can't do?
Everyone was talking about V’s vocal after the movie at the theater. She improved so much 🥺
