THIS. This right here ladies and gents, is why he won the Golden Globe. The raw emotion and power in his voice, the lovely piano, the beautiful storytelling that tugs at the heart, everything building up to this part was already phenomenal, but this scene easily steals the show for me. Just everything Andrew Garfield has done the whole movie is all so glorious and is what rightfully makes him so worthy of that award. Hopefully this isn't the last time we see him in a movie musical and this is only the beginning for him. Perhaps an Oscar is in his future for this role as well? Only time will tell.

Andrew was robbed, straight up robbed of an Oscar for this song alone. I'm never gonna get over that. You can't tell me that the nominee that learned and outright mastered two new skills for his role AND acted his heart out didn't deserve to win. The Oscars need a category for musicals like the Golden Globes has, at least Andrew would have definitely gotten his due then.

My English is not very good, but I wanted to say that I agree with you, and every time I have the opportunity to express and imply that giving Wil Smith the Osacr was a robbery, I do it. In 2019 the Oscar winner was Rami Malek, who learned to sing, to play the piano, he played an artist, practically the same as Andrew years later, for me it was inconsistent that one won and the other didn't, doing something similar and performing better than the other candidates. I hope that in the future it will be recognized as it deserves.

Fun fact: They originally planned to film this with playback and Andrew Garfield lip-syncing, but when time came for shooting he felt that the emotional state Jonathan was in was different from what he delivered on the recording, so he sang this live at the Delacorte. Also fun fact: They shot this in March, so when they started filming again under the new COVID protocols they weren't allowed to have spontaneous moments like that, because of the risks of spreading COVID while singing, so they were only allowed to pick certain moments for live singing. Lin-Manuel Miranda actually got yelled at by the COVID monitors when Garfield spontaneously sang during one of the first days back filming.

Colbert himself lost a parent when he was young and it was clear he was affected by it. 3. “I hope this grief stays with me”
This part made me cry, especially with the home movie mock footage of 9 year old/16 year old Michael and Jon. It’s heartbreaking to see them so young and with their whole lives ahead of them knowing what happened. It’s so bittersweet because Jon wrote this I believe as a tribute to those that were lost during the AIDS epidemic (which included a lot of people that Jon knew), and in this number he is reflecting on the fear of losing his best friend since childhood and the person whom Michael was based off of survived HIV/AIDS…others weren’t so lucky.
I'm a former theatre kid who lost their dreams and a lot of their talent to trauma, eating disorders and depression. And this pandemic...like it did for everyone made things a lot worse. It's easy to forget what makes you happy when all you are trying to do is survive. But Jonathan...in the face of death..talking about the pure joy he felt doing something so ordinary as going to rehearsals, pouring his all into little community theatre productions, making connections with other loud, goofy, obnoxious and very loving theatre kids in an old dusty rehearsal space playing acting games and getting every part right...made me take stock of my own life. Looking through all of my embarrassments and failures I really had to ask myself "What times were I the happiest?" And when it came down to it...those times were all of the experiences that Jonathan shared in this song. Notice he didn't say "What a way to make money" or "What a way to become famous" he said "What a way to spend the day". Needless to say this song made me ugly cry in a way that I haven't in a really long time. That despite all the other crap there was still a part of me that knew what that joy was. I hope all of us get to spend our days the way we wish. No matter how much life can make us lose sight of it.
Give. This man. An Oscar. Will, Denzel, Javier, & Benedict did wonderfully, but this pulls me in and makes me identify with the humanity of this man in a way that I never expected. It's a career defining performance. Christ.

Congratulations, Andrew Garfield for being nominated as Best Actor in the 94th Oscars!
Before watching this movie I never had interest in musicals, and had no knowledge of Jonathan Larson. But this movie, and this song in particular, brought out some serious emotions. "What a way to spend a day" is something that people need to take time and say to themselves more. Life is fleeting, and we need to take a moment from time to time and enjoy the people we hold dear.
This is my favorite part of film simply because of the amount of visible emotion you see him go thru. As well as the nostalgic theme of the song. Very well deserved oscar nomination.
He truly deserves an Oscar for his performance in this film. Such an extraordinary talent that brings such passion to every role he takes on.
Andrew set the bar at new heights in this movie. The Golden Globe is so rightfully his, as should be the Critics choice. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 for the Oscar.
They shot this in the first week of production. Just another testament to how fantastic Garfield is.
his golden globe for this was well deserved
Garfield is simply stunning in this movie. The premise of this story is oddly structured with a different narrative arc. So many things could have gone wrong with this. But Garfield deep-dives into his part and gives us a flesh and blood character that we can relate to...and makes the movie a cut above the usual fare. That he can sing (and how!) is fabulous. Hand him the Oscar already.
now THIS is how you sing live in a movie musical
I knew he can get a award by this scene. And He's actually Singing! OST got studio version.
If this scene doesn’t convince you that Garfield needs to win the Oscar, I’m sorry but you need to get your head checked.

andrew garfield is the perfect musical actor. it’s one thing perfectly sing emotionally in a song, but it’s a whole other thing to truly act and sing. the emotion is so raw and pure, that it adds imperfections to his vocal, which makes it even more perfect. he’s expressing his love and grief and pain about the threat of losing the most important person in his life, all through song. it shouldn’t be perfectly sung which a couple extra hard vocals. it should be expressed as purely as it is here. from his real crying while singing, messing up his breath control and nasal capabilities, to his conviction when he say “i make a vow…” rarely have i seen an actor express and capture emotion so well, on and off screen. the man is an artist through and through, and he’s even dealt with his own loss. he’s so connected to Jon, no one could’ve done it better.

I think it's the line "what a way to spend the day". It doesn't matter if you make money or obtain fame from it. It matters that you spend as much time as you can doing what makes you happy. I feel like I'm past the point of trying to make money off of this. I'm doing the 9-5 thing but I'm lucky that I found a theatre group that meets outside of those hours. When I listened to this song and looked back at the few times in my life in which I was the happiest...really the happiest I realized "damn....those all took place at a theatre didn't they?"
Dude got snubbed for Silence and Hacksaw Ridge! 3 better be the magic number!
Highway f*cking robbery that this man didn't get an Oscar
the part where he sings “i make a vow, right here and now” 02:01is so great i’m obsessed
This scene, absolutely heartbreaking💔💔💔💔 what a wonderful movie
At the beginning of the film, he’s freaking out over running out of time to achieve all his dreams. “Why” is him realising he’s running out of time to spend with the people he loves.
Love this song and it is so special to me because my son is the Youngest Micheal in the flashbacks. The song/scene make me cry every time I watch it and so proud he is a small part of it!

Wow! Congratulations! Be proud! ❤️🥰
I’m incredibly happy that he won at the Golden Globes. Hoping he bags his long overdue Oscar this year and that we get to watch his live speech. 🙏 He’s such a talented storyteller, an eloquent and inspiring speaker during his interviews.
Andrew Garfield deserves all the recognitions and praises he gets from this movie. Right person to portray Jonathan Larson
him not winning the Oscar was one of or even the biggest injustice in the award shows history.
Jonathan Larson must be so proud 😭 and please give the oscars best actor award to andrew!! he killed this
not him getting the golden globe AND being the best spider man LIKE MATERIAL GORL-
Everytime I hear this song I just start bawling 😭
I can only imagine what it was like to witness this on set.
Most people will remember Garfield for Spider Man and thats ok. But I will forever remember him for this gem. Incredible performance and movie. He and Lin Manuel did an excellent job
this was probably when this movie started to make me cry
three words: FUTURE. OSCAR. WINNER.
andrew gives such a beautiful & absolutely unforgettable performance throughout but this scene is truly phenomenal
Why do I have a feeling that this time Andrew's gonna get his first Oscar win this year? Because if it'll do, it just reminded me of Emma Stone when she won an Oscar for "La La Land", another musical film where she also sang there. Dude I can clearly see why they're indeed soulmates!! Edit: HE’S GOT NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR IN THE OSCARS FOR THIS!!!!
OSCAR WIN 2022! MANIFEST IT BECAUSE OUR BOY DESERVES IT
I really hope Andrew can get his Ocar for his incredible performance in TikTikBoom. It was the most touching performance for me in 2021.
"When I emerge from B minor A" *Chills*
I watched this with my friends and when this song finished I had the unmistakable urge to hug the crap out of them. Lol.
This movie is the first movie since Endgame to make me cry, this scene is nothing short of art. Andrew’s amazing voice and emotion along with the storytelling and cinematography just pulls this scene together in the most beautiful way it could possibly be. Any awards this movie has and will earn, it deserves.
Give this man an OSCAR !!!!
it would be such a gift if they released the cut version of "green dress" for everyone to see!!! andrew garfield was fantastic for this role and he definitely deserves an oscar for his performance as jonathan larson

this comment aged incredibly well
never getting over how beautiful this movie is. watching all the interviews you can see how passionate everyone is for this project, and that really showed on screen. exactly what I need in my life rn ❤❤
This dude is talented. He went from Eduardo in Social Network to Spiderman to this, Jonathan flippin Larson. Andrew honours that legend every time he is on screen in this movie. Mad respect.
This film means so much to me.
The crazy thing is, according to Andrew Garfield, this was one of the first scenes shot because of location availability. Wow!
And…. Here’s your Academy Awards winner for best actor in leading role of the year 2022.
Such a great performance. I also want a full version of Andrew Garfield singing 'Come To Your Sense'.
I would love to see the producers and directors faces on the other side of the camera while watching Andrew sing this. I’m so proud of Andrew and I don’t even know the guy. 😢
Easily one of the best movies of 2021. He should get nominated for an Oscar
Please Academy Awards...He deserved IT!
i made a vow, right here and now im gonna spend my time this way !!
4:07 absolutely powerful
This entire scene completely took my breath away, the emotion... is absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. I love it😭😭😭
This scene in the movie...broke me...made me cry
THIS!! I wept so much!! Jon's writing, Lin's Directing and Andrew's acting and performing... made this a stellar scene! I'm crying again! 😭 GIVE THIS MAN HIS OSCAR!!!❤ I think of everyone I've lost. Makes me feel choked up knowing Andrew had lost his Mum not long before shooting! And feeling what Jon must have felt in this moment in his tragically short life 😢❤
