Tiangong: Behind China’s Answer to the International Space Station | WSJ

Ғылым және технология

China says its newly equipped Tiangong space station will be up and running by next year while the future of the nearly 23-year-old International Space Station remains uncertain after 2024. China says its spacecraft has more advanced technology, like a more efficient propulsion system and a tag-along space telescope.
WSJ unpacks the design and technology of both space stations and takes a look at China’s history in space exploration.

    "Despite US blocking China from space collaboration, they were able to land a rover on dark side of the moon on the first try - something US failed at repeatedly." Um, no. I applaud China's success, but there has not been even *one* US attempt to do that. Nor have we placed the necessary communication relays in an Earth-Moon L2 'halo' orbit needed to support such a thing, as China necessarily had to do first. Nor has the US tried to place a remotely controlled rover on the *near* side of the Moon, either (there was a proposal called 'Prospector,' intended to succeed Surveyor, that never got beyond the planning stage). The only US rovers on the Moon had *local* operators...

    ISS has a reliance on Russia for carrier rocket going back and forth. If Russia stop cooperating, then it’s stuck and it could be catastrophic. That shows the vulnerability of ISS. On the other hand, China’s is fully independent but claiming will be “true international” in the future. That shows the differences in approach.

  • @DiOxls

    @DiOxls

    The ISS isn't reliant on Russia's Soyuz rockets anymore. SpaceX proved they can replace Russia for this job when they delivered astronauts and supplies to the ISS. You would be very ignorant to think this is anything but empty words from China. If they will ever allow other nations to operate on the space station they will a) want to know every detail and result of the research conducted there and b) use it as another pressure method to make those nations dependent on them and enforce their national interests in conflicts.

    Highly doubt this... Contrary to popular belief, when it comes to programming and enigeering software, most low level stuff used in China is in english... They would not re-invent their own OS or language -- they would re-purpose existing Assembly, Linux, C, C++, Rust or whatever (all with english verbs and nouns) ... The interfaces to high level software may have Chinese language but would very likely also include English and other languages as an option. If they are serious about collaboration, they will likely be using English because their astronauts probably already know English while very few non-chinese engineers would be able to speak mission critical mandarin. I've been in China ten years and my Mandarin, while good, is probably not good enough to have heavy space engineering discussions -- the kind that would be necessary when in life or death space.

    very exciting to see renewed competition and innovation in space exploration. With enough motivated parties and dedicated investments we could see massive expansion of orbital presence. This in turn would lay the groundwork for Lunar presence. Once that is established and we are able to extract resources from the Moon, provided we have created shortcuts in the efficiency of leaving and returning to Earth, the orbital economy will be a new frontier. Skyhooks and Space Elevators are both exciting prospects that will give us a road forward to creating large scale structures in space as well as instantly increasing our range of exploration.
