I uploaded this in 4:3 just like the original disc, and it constantly switches back and forth between that and letterboxed material. If I had uploaded this in 16:9, the letterboxed material would be tiny and annoying to watch.

I bought the Laser Disc “Special Edition” box set and a AC-3 decoder in college . . . I remember thinking “It’ll never get any better than this!”

I got mine for free with the last LD player I bought. It was a floor display model, and they didn't realize that the "Wow" disc was inside it. Their loss :)

that soundtrack documentary might be one of the most fascinating things i've heard about in quite a while, really shows you the painstaking amount of time that goes into sound design, especially remaking it for modern general audiences nowadays

That classic THX opening gets me in the feels every flippen time! Edit: Seeing the audio spliced together like that is interesting to me, I guess I take for granted these days how easy mixing has become with computers audio production has sure come a long way from then.

When I first got this disc I played WOW dozens of times. I wish they would release it in HD. Some have tried, and it's possible to replace the footage with the new HD versions. But you can't get the closing classic logo I love so much in HD. I lved this disc. Loved the foley part and have used it to explain to many. Thanks for uploading it. - Toronto, Canada.

We really have come a long way of remixing and re editing sounds. We had to do it ourselves physically back in the day. But now with modern technology, it's become a little more easier.

It works! Dolby Surround! Woo hoo! (I finally found the right setting on my receiver, I guess good old Surround is still there on a modern receiver.) Try it at the 32:52 mark . . .

KZread does support surround unfortunately this video is only in stereo so if you plan to use it for a surround test dont bother. But if youre just here for nostalgia keep on watching!

The LaserDisc itself is also stereo, encoded with surround via common sounds in phase (center channel) and common sounds out of phase (surround channel). KZread or any other stereo delivery format perfectly replicates this. The only way to destroy it would be to listen to only one of the stereo channels, or sum them to mono. So yes, you can use this to test your surround so long as you tell your receiver to engage Dolby Surround. Some receivers (particularly those from Denon and Marantz) will force stereo only (no surround decoding) over HDMI unless the material is flagged for surround encoding. Sadly there's no way to force those receivers to process the surround, but it's more the fault of those receivers than it is of this video or KZread. If the KZread app had a surround flag in the HDMI output then you'd get full surround. I noticed the Discovery app on my Roku recently started doing this. Last year = strict stereo, this year = stereo with Pro Logic decoding.

8:13 "both the professional THX system" I use the commercial cinema professional version in my THX cinema, Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System - 3417 with JBL cinema professional of up to 55 speakers and 38.000kw THX and I still have the THX WOW! disc that is useful for alignment of the Dolby Stereo matrix thou I can use other test tonea REW trueRTA 1KHz to align Dolby Lt Rt, cos Dolby upmixer on these AVR's doesan't do it the way it was intended I use proper Dolby Stereo MP 4.2.4 matrix for most Laserdiscs that are Dolby Stereo or use the Dolby CP200 CP500, but my Denon AVC-X8500H its an okay AVR Atmos.

Disney doesn't own THX. Lucasfilm spun off THX long before that happened (back in 2002, exactly 10 years before Disney bought Lucasfilm). THX is currently owned by gaming peripherals manufacturer Razer

It actually plays the “Surround” channels on the height left & right speakers, nothing on SL and SR. Weird, but effective.

I turned on my Dolby Pro Logic II for, I think, the first time ever while watching this when it occurred to me that it was probably made specifically for this type of thing. I was actually very impressed with the separation that they were able to achieve with just two channels. Now I'm wondering what I could have missed in the past by not using it, and wether I should just leave it on all the time regardless of the source.

while it wasn't mixed with DPL2 in mind, it was mixed with the traditional "Dolby Stereo" matrixed surround in mind, which does unfold into "Dolby Surround," "Dolby Pro Logic" and DPL2 very nicely. This LD was released when matrixed surround sound was the norm in both theaters and in the home. Btw, if you have any old VHS tapes or Laserdiscs of movies that released in the 80s/90s, try turning on DPL2 with them, since they use the same sort of thing for their stereo tracks.

I miss this era of LucasFilm. The 90's was great: TV, movies, books, comics, magazines, games, merch. Dumbass Fanboiz complained about everything Lucas did, but I enjoyed almost all of it. Great decade for the best entertainment company of all time - until Disney flushed it down the toilet.

What’s your take on the way Christopher Nolan mixed Tenet?

  • @soundsack5400

Haven't watched that one yet. But Nolan does not have good sound mixes in most of his recent movies... starting with Batman Begins actually. Dialog is mixed poorly, you HAVE to watch with subtitles or captions.
