Thursday Night Debate Breakdown: Richard Dawkins vs. Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Victor and Ethan once again join Ben to continue the weekly series of Thursday Night Debate Breakdowns. This week they're watching still-atheist Richard Dawkins' debate with atheist-turned-confusing-sort-of-Christian Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

My plan is to watch Ben Burgis break down the discourse until Ben is a grand old man of philosophy (I’m 55 years old later this year so I am planning a long life)

59:00 ". . . because now they'll believe in anything." So she is a Christian as a marketing campaign? That actually would make sense if she would just admit it.

Haha right? What I don't understand is that if atheism has done such a good job at breaking down Christianity in the west, why would it not do the same to another religion? It seems that her argument or lack thereof reduces to morals come from religion. I don't understand how I have never heard the argument that you should be able to get a good moral grounding with nothing but the golden rule.

57:31 it was maybe 2012 era Dillahunty that convinced me that we cannot choose our beliefs. Not if they are sincere. Her choosingness here rustles my jimmies. Edit1: uh oh… “ different planes of perception” sounds like “alternative facts” and college kids being politically extra is part of the plan.

I really appreciate the BTAAGG commenters leaning in on the crucial nature of meaning. I do however get strong “ meaning “ jet fuel from Dawkins courage to go hard on this in the tiniest time footprint. It’s hard to talk brevity.

1:44:07 I teach 2nd grade math in a very progressive public charter school in Oakland, CA and I’ve never seen any curriculum doing the kind of history-erasing AHA is describing here. It’s just not a real thing from my anecdotal pov.

Actually Atheism does give you freedom from all that guilt. Just like how this people who search for meaning. I'm sure that are people who search for liberation from all that religious borders.

Totally get how religion is comfortable. But the same can be said of all these addictive drugs. Are we going to accept that people just do that to their death. I mean, I would like that to be the case. Even though I would like to save people if we could.

Good to hear Ben openly referencing South Park. A lot of Leftists won't fk with that show because of Matt & Trey's Libertarian tendencies. Just more silly cancelling of comedians while the world burns. Hey that's a good title for a book someone should write it... Some of Ayaan's personal backstory is controversial in that she *may* have embellished certain elements. However, Theo Van Gogh was very definitely murdered after directing her short film. She's an odd duck.

@@0MVR_0 True, however I recently watched a couple of the newest episodes ("specials" - mini movies, really). The latest one about the American Health Care System and anti-Obesity medication wasn't bad at all. Butters getting lost in the system and ending up in the 5D structure from "Interstellar" was fkin classic.
