I've been to Fairbanks twice, once in the summer and once in the winter and that 1967 winter it did get down to almost 60 below. The flight-line of the Eielson Air Force Base is always illuminated and you could actually see the air sparkling with those ice crystals floating in the air. It gives new meaning to Winter Wonderland.

How in the world does animals survive in that environment. Nature is amazing.

Achint Rastogi I was up there while in the army. After 3 weeks of -50 and lower, it warmed up to -10. It was warm enough we did PT in shorts and t-shirts. That was an interesting couple of weeks.

I was born in Fairbanks at the old St. Joseph’s hospital in December 1951. It was -70 degrees f. Dad’s truck wouldn’t start so mom and I spent an extra three days in the hospital! Nice demo!

Ah sorry you wrote -70 degrees Fahrenheit.. it's around -56.6°C but..anyway I checked and that year long time ago, the lowest recorded temperature in December was -26.8°C

If you check on Wikipedia..u can read ,the lowest recorded temperature in Fairbanks was on January 14,1934...it was -66°F and other records all about the past...at beginning of 1900

@Charles Gosnell If you must know why I didn't go with my first instinct is because that particular night I was flat out "battle weary" with what all i already have to go through during the day ok? This video kinda took my mind off of stuff for a moment. And yes, the woman probably needed my comment, but I said, no, I don't want to get into an argument with her. We were the same in Ontario in January at -40 to -45. It takes your breath away at first and your nostrils freeze closed if you breathe through your nose but once you take a minute to get used to it, it’s business as usual

As a lifelong Fairbanks resident, that is very flattering lmao. It’s -30f rn and its not that bad, cuz the air gets so cold that it loses all humidity, which makes the temp feel less extreme. I can go outside for roughly 20 minutes in only 2 light jackets without it getting unbearable. It’s the -20 weather that I can’t stand tbh

A couple years ago it was -12 degrees one morning. My kids had the crazy idea to go outside and blow soap bubbles off the porch, just to see what would happen. They started by sucking on an ice cube, to make their breath cold, then they blew the bubbles. They dropped to the ground and shattered like they were made out of glass. It was truly fascinating. Quite spectacular.

Oh thanks! Well we sometimes have that much cold in Quebec city and, on rare occasions, even lower. Last new year's eve, around midnight and 2h am, on Grande-Allée, it was about minus 55°Celcius . You had to be dancing non-stop and dress like crazy to withstand the cold and enjoy the outside festivities!

Wow!!! My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Alaska. While we were in Fairbanks, a woman who was caretaker for the trailer park we stayed in, told us that throwing the water in the air on days below 40 below zero was her favorite thing to do. I hadn't seen it done before this, I owe this guy a thanks.

I didn't write this last time but I used this video when I was teaching in japan a few years back. They asked how it was where I went to Uni. They loved it and thought it was insane.

There was no wind. Otherwise frostbite sets in fast in that weather. Probably still, not a good idea. -30F without windchill is the coldest I have experienced. -52F wow!

This reminded me of a friend's childhood story up in Prince Edward Island, CND, when the kids were outside playing and had to pee but didn't feel like going back home to do so. They'd just do it right there and then. He told me that his piss would turn into ice before it hit the ground. Amazing and so funny!
