Let me share my thoughts about Sarah J Maas and her cloned books: I guess that these are the result of two elements put together. First, an editorial market which knows what little pre-adolescent girls want (cuz I've been doing research about general opinions they have about ToG and ACOTAR, and trust me, they LOVE THEM). Second, Sarah started with this sh*t when she was a teenager, like many people, making shallow fanfictions full of smut and magic powers and fully described dresses and astonishingly beautiful guys and ladies. Time passed, she started publishing officially, but editors knew this teenage pretentious girlish fanfic-like novels sell a lot, so they didn't suggested Sarah to improve her writing, prose, structure, or even maturity. So she keeps writing as if she still was a 14 year old with lots of wet fantasies. Consequence? Well, a teenage, even if I don't want to generalize, usually gets bored of everything pretty fast. So, here we have a story with a lady with certain powers and abilities, but the author quickly gets bored of that and starts to give her new magic, and heritage, and other species' characteristics. She has a certain amount of love interests, but the author gets bored of them so she starts giving her many other hot disposable guys who love her and could be easily replaced. She have a certain mission as an survivor assassin, but the author gets bored of that sh*t easily so she starts making up another megalomaniac plot about saving the world from demons. She even has a bombastic name, but the author gets bored and changes it completely for some other long high-flown aristocratic name with many surnames and titles and whatever. So, that's what I think. Sarah J Maas writes stories where she can be like a child in a candy shop and she can be like a goddess and everything she creates turns around her and can be changed when she feels like whenever she get bored of it, going against every logic.

The only person, out of who ends up being the somewhat 'core' group, that doesn't have a love interest at the end is because they died. I remember reading the last book and thinking that was the only reason that Gavriel even dies is that she didn't have a love interest for him. It's such a trash message to send to fans, especially since its YA.

I’m responding to so many comments but EXACTLY!! I hated Gavriel he literally did nothing but he had no reason to die. He was killed off because SJM felt like she needed to kill someone. Everyone had to have a ‘mate’ in the books every though they’re super rare. She had to make Manon date Dorian even though they barely have any chemistry besides Dorian flirting with her like he flirts with everyone. She had to have everyone date someone else. Don’t even talk about Aedion and Lysandra it made NO sense. Everyone had to be romantically involved or they died. She also does this in her other series ACOTAR. I used to love SJM but as I’ve grown and looked back on her books there are so many issues

A and L made sense in my (teenage) eyes. In a circumatance kinda way they have suffered the same fate. The king/the system has destored their family, forced them into a fake persona and working a job, which they hate. Their traumas are alike, they are on the same cast... He was a boy. She was a girl. Their author is SJM. Can I make it any more obvious? I totally agree with the overdone mates and non death/sacrifices. For me the last book had no stakes. Woah, tension. I wonder, what undiscovered powers will save the day this time...

I heard about this book and was worried mine would be too similar. Then I read it and was SO THANKFUL my book is nothing like hers in any way. I later read an interview where she said that as she wrote the story it grew beyond the Cinderella retelling and there was nothing like the original story, so yay for me! She did say the masked ball in book one and the throne and castle of glass are nods to her original idea.

This author really has no excuse for not looking into battle strategies. In 1861 at the start of the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln had little to no military know-how and had a lot frustration with his generals, who were basically rich guys trying to make a name for themselves prior to Grant, but he did what any smart person would do: go to the library and give himself a crash course on the subject. Within a year he was well-versed in military tactics and was up-to-date on that subject as well as the weaponry. Just sayin'.

25:02 this was explained in Empire of Storms (5th book). The lock has to be closed by on of Mala's bloodline. Mala was the fire goddess who fell in love with the Fae Brannon and they founded the kingdom Terrassen. Elena, one of their children, married Garvin, the founder of the kingdom Adarlan. This makes both, Aelin and Dorian, heirs to Mala and with this they are both able to close the lock. Because of this, Dorian's father was in the end able to close the lock. It was just only focused on Aelin because ... she's the main one.

ToG's cinderella roots can be traced back to its "original" draft on Fictionpress, which Sarah wrote as a teenager. In that Celaena works as a maid, goes to a ball in glass slippers, etc. Even whole sequences from the 1950 Disney movie are reproduced whole-cloth against the backdrop of the setting that would be present in the published series. In between there's a lot of filler and immature drama. I read all of it. I don't want to roast one of the first things an author wrote, but I will say it's.... interesting, especially when you compare the differences between the FP version and the published version. (Spoiler. Dorian is a lot worse.)

Emily Broderick Yeah, the authors did romanticize really unhealthy relationships including the student/teacher relationship...and I don’t remember the main character getting an negative repercussions other than “getting her heart broken.” I don’t mind books with unhealthy relationships as long as it provides commentary or critique. These books signal to young readers that those kinds of relationships are normal and okay. I hope the authors didn’t make too much money off this series. Young girls need better role models than Zoey Redbird.

I would recommend the book Second Hand Curses for some actual enjoyment. It is a part of the trend of retelling fairytales, but it had an interesting idea in that an A-team type of group was helping those stories reach a happy ending similiar to the ones found in Disney. Either way it is really short, about 8 or 9 hours on audible.

17:08 Dorian had raw magic. This was explained in Crown of Midnight (2nd book). This means he can perform any kind of magic, this includes shapeshifting :). And everyone has to learn how to use their magic in the world (what a bit deeper explained in Tower of Dawn). The magic is, if I remember correctly, kinda connected to the emotions of the people. Like every time Aelin is angry she can burn brighter. And the talking spider explains that shapeshifting is about change and letting go. But Dorian was not emotional stable in this book and was not able to let go. He felt guilty about what happened (especially to Sorscha) and this made it so hard for him to learn this ability (while he had not such huge problems with other kinds of magic like ice. It fits his character better). With this you can also understand why Lysandra was able to shapeshift immediately. She wanted change. She wanted to let go of the body which was used/raped over such a long time. Let's just all ignore the fact, that this would make him more powerful than Aelin (it's even mentioned in the books), so Aelin can continue to look like the most powerful badass.

I can clearly see that we share a trauma, and I really feel bad suggesting it, but you should make more notes if you are going to make a video out of it.
