    @@ketherga English towns are usually named depending on location or trait. Other countries have just stupid names. Some of the cities in my country is called Ace Mountain (it has nothing to do with either) and Eel Castle (even though there is no castle and eels have never been in our seas) or my personal favourite: Sperm.

    Nona Usagi I could not find the explanation for two of Them, but Googled a few other weird towns. Apparently it’s a case of officials from the capital not understanding countryside accents. Therefore, When writing the name Down after having asked what it was called they’d misspell it. Eventually, the name was just changed to the misspelled version. Eel castle is Aalborg in danish. This is apparently a misspelling of állburgh (old-Danish for fortified City (burgh) where the inlet narrows (áll) Apparently out Capital Copenhagen/København (Buy a harbour) is also a simplified version Køpmannæhafn (which means City of traders)

    Urban fiction is so hilarious because it’s so unintentionally racist that’s it practically cartoony. I’m Puerto Rican, not black but I’ve lived surrounded by black people and other minorities, I live in “the ghetto” as our dear authors would call it and it’s so blatant that a lot of the authors for these works haven’t experienced this lifestyle. Sometimes it kind of insulting considering they romanticize certain aspects of this life that just shouldn’t be. My advice for those who’d like to write fiction in a more urban setting is, familiarize yourself with the culture and slang. Familiarize yourself with the struggles that come from living in impoverished communities and the struggles that can come from racism. Being a minority in country with institutional racism is something that’s interesting to write about and can include lots of melodrama that young readers love. My point is, if you’re going to write about a way of life that you don’t know about, either educate yourself or just put it in a fantasy setting or something.

    Okay so Muslim girls writing about dating white guys. This is coming from a Muslim (or raised Muslim) fanfiction writer who grew up in the UK. So romantic and sexual repression is something a lot of us grills experience due to the religious values we’re raised with. Beyond that we’re pretty encouraged against race mixing, which conflicts with the feelings we probably have developed for the guys around us. In movies we see cool white guys, in fantasy books we see cool white guys, in all the shitty fanfiction we read we see cool white guys, and in our classes we see some pretty lame white guys. But the point is our bodies and urges really conflict with what we’ve been raised to think- so when we try to express our repressed desires through fanfiction that’s the kinda what your mind goes to. A struggle we are familiar with that feels dangerous and interesting. It’s fantasy fulfillment- having the confidence and freedom to express yourself and date however you want. This might be different for other girls or more religious girls but that’s how it was for me. :)

    The authors put so much of a focus on it and you can tell they want to fall in love with a hot boy (what straight teenage girl doesn’t?) yet they shame girls for it, and label themselves as “not like other girls” as if it makes them superior. Honestly us humans would have so much fun if we just stopped caring about such trivial things, and judging people for them as if it those things were all we are

    Most of it is written by teenage girls/young women with raging hormones, what's disturbing about dreaming about having sex and writing it down? It's a completely natural urge and probably something many of them haven't gotten around to experience yet or know their audience is craving because the audience lacks it. Yea sure it would be nice to have more works that aren't focused on love and sex, but who are we to insult people's sexual outlet? It's not like we go around porn sites and complain that the movies have too much focus on sex..? Erotic fiction IS many women's porn after all.

  • @netrowthe

    @netrowthe

    HaichaoTeaLover I don’t actually have a problem with it if it’s in that context, my issue with it is when authors use their stories to slut shame. Like they will literally create a character (99.99% of the time a girl) who’s sole purpose is to be a “whore” the author can dehumanize and use to make the main character and themselves feel superior. The worst part of it is sometimes this character hooks up with the love interest who isn’t shamed at all so the love interest can later reject them for the mc. A good example of this is “after” the one direction fanfic that somehow became a movie. Just look at a few random chapters on Wattpad or watch videos reviewing it and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

  • @Aramythr

    @Aramythr

    3 жыл бұрын

    Probably because published books have cover art made by cover art artists hired by the publisher. The authors themselves often have little say in that matter. I don't like it either. I don't know for sure, but since you can upload any image for your cover I imagine a lot of wattpad authors using images from the web, often without permission or the rights to this. Publishers are very cautious of this so they choose to create their own. Wattpad stories often aren't monetized though so it'd fall under fair use, thus most wpad authors can just use whatever they find. And if the author can draw themselves then they have all the freedom to do so.

    I've gone through the whole comment section, and the golden girl's fandom seems really butthurt. Its kind of weird, especially since the author is already okay with it. He already gave a disclaimer, and he didn't say anything really. Honestly, if he really DID give criticism as a seasoned reader, it would have been so much helpful for all the writers, but all of you wouldn't know that since you're blinded by the perfection that seems the book to you. One chapter is enough to decide if you want to let a book consume the time. Even if it gets better, what's the point if you have to torture yourself through cringe for the first chapters? The author said she has the better version, so kudos to her. But don't go around being so OH MY GOD HOW DARE HE SAY THAT? when he didn't even say anything that much

    I've been wanting you to do something like this, as you're one of the few youtubers that talks about written works and Wattpad is a gold mine of content in my opinion. Imagine my surprise when you made it an hour long, that's fantastic. There are so many heavy handed descriptions that it drives me insane. I SAID WHILE WEARING MY BROWN FRAYED SLIP ON MOCCASINS, MY SILK RED AND BLUE PAJAMA PANTS, AND MY WHITE, TATTERED AND OLD WIFE-BEATER THAT HASN'T SEEN THE MORNING SUN IN THREE YEARS. I ALSO FOR SOME REASON HAVE PERFECT WAVY BUT CURLY BUT STRAIGHT HAIR, AND MY EYES ARE CALLED HELEN BECAUSE THEY HAVE STARTED WARS SEVERAL TIMES WHEN I FELT PLAYFUL. Just exhausting. Also I disagree that these writers are all teenagers and thus immune to criticism. There are plenty of early to late 20's writers, and even if they genuinely are teenagers that doesn't excuse how trope-y they are. A writer can't improve if they forever think they are perfection. Most writers learn what is and is not good writing, but these successful Wattpad stories generate thousands of praise comments, how are these kids going to learn then? Critique is what might push them to growth, and even if it doesn't for them specifically, it might motivate others watching. You're doing necessary work here.

    Ok so let me put this out here. I'm a fan of your videos, I watch them regularly, but let me write something in my defence. I'm the author of Two Gangs and a Golden Girl and I'm actually a decent writer considering that English is not my home language. Unfortunately, the works that I'm proud of never got any views. The thing about Wattpad is that all the cliche books get views. The good ones don't. So, with that in mind, I wrote Two Gangs and a Golden Girl. The first few chapters are written like that on purpose. I hate it to be honest. But if you read on, actually get closer to the end, you realize that it's nothing like it appears to be. The edited version of my book which is on other sites is much better as well. None of that cliche shit that I hated to write. I'm also known as Satan amongst my readers because I like killing characters and doing so abundantly. Amber seems perfect because it's meant to be like that until you realize she isn't. She makes human mistakes and she paints, not because she's quirky, but because I do. I really love painting - currently busy painting a giant map of my fantasy world in my book (A Godly Game) and I use your videos for tips and stuff for my writing. When my main character is forced to deal with death, she does turn dark and you see her trying to juggle being a kind painter and being in the middle of violence. The gold thing is used metaphorically. She's gold when she's good and silver when she's darker. I'm not angry at the comments, because I have much worse things in my head. I'm so ashamed of telling people about that book, even though it does a lot better than my other books. Honestly, though, I aspire to be a writer and I do put more time into the edited version where I don't have to be cliche to get views. My rereaders can defend me in that department and tell you that the book really isn't what it looks like. My main character doesn't fall for one of the two gang leaders and instead I work on friendship and teamwork and real pain and death. I laughed at most of the comments and how you read it. I'm still subscribed but kinda amused at the chances of you reading my book while I've been following you for a while. Edit: I'd like to add that I enjoy writing the action more than the romance. But I have a target audience so... It's not much of a choice. My racing scenes, fighting scenes and brutal reality is something I much more enjoyable and unfortunately I have to get teenage girls to read my book so I can't get to the good stuff until I have them. So sorry you had to experience that.

    As far as fiction involving Muslims being popular on Wattpad - Smart Podcast, Trashy Books did a thing on it a few years ago. Basically, it boils down to the fact that there was pent-up demand among Muslim girls for YA books that featured characters like them, and since many of them were already on Wattpad for RPFs, that kind of fiction was a logical next step - and it kind of developed from there.

    You know, I find it silly how people make fun of writers on wattpad. I don't want to know what GRRMartin's or Brandon Sanderson's writing was like when they were teenagers, but I am pretty sure it was also bad and full of cliches. I work with children and often they have to write short stories and fantasy stories and most of the stories are very cliche: super handsome, good hero (mostly a self-insert) does something very awsome. Most writers start out writing Mary Sues and badly-cliched stuff, but that only helps them to mature and maybe one day, from all these hundreds of badly written stories, will emerge another GRRMartin, Brandon Sanderson and Tolkien. Most good writers started out their career in their twenties, thirties and fourties. To grow as a writer takes sometimes years and fanfiction and wattpad are ways for them to grow. Of course some of these stories are cringe-worthy as fuck, but for these kids it is a way to grow in confidence. Imagine writing something as a super edgy fifteen year old and how much confidence it can give you to try yourself on a real book. It might be worth it in the end.
