Thrills and spills as Cheese Rolling 2023 leads to MULTIPLE injuries in Gloucestershire, UK
Footage of the annual cheese rolling event in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, this afternoon (May 29). Dozens of thrill seekers from all over the world threw themselves down the steep Cooper’s Hill to chase a wheel of cheese. There were several injuries reported. One senior police officer said last week there was the risk of "mass casualties" if something went wrong. But the quirky event, which has no official organisers, still went ahead.
It sees competitors chase a 7lb (3kg) Double Gloucester down the steep 200-yard drop, many tripping and tumbling as they go.

For a similar experience .... .... 15-20 years ago, I was skydiving with some mates & one evening after we'd a few beers we decided to play 'beer bungee'. Someone brought out a bungee cord, tied it to a tree & the objective was to clip the other end onto a parachute container your wearing ( a harness with leg straps, a chest strap & straps over the shoulders -all connecting at the back ). You'll drink beer while walking forward till you can't -against the bungee tension. Place your beer on the ground so it won't tip over, as the bungee whips you backwards....towards that tree (we dressed it with couch cushions incase anyone hit it). Whoever left their beer standing farthest from the tree wins. Being in a wheelchair, I needed some assistance, to get pulled forward while I drank beer. The guys After the 1st guy got to the end of his strength, I asked for 3 additional guys to help pull me farther then any beer can there. I don't remember much about the tumbling. Cheese rolling Welly wanging Gurning any more?
This needs to be an olympic event
I have previously been a medic at this and probably will be again, without the catchers we would almost certainly have a fatality every year, we give them some basic training on casualty handling and there are normally at least four medics on the side of the hill, quite often at least two of them are on ropes anchored at the top with a rescue stretcher for rope rescues should the need arise, I have been one of the rope rescue medics plenty of times and we can actually run down on ropes face first or backwards depending upon where the casualty is, if they are towards the bottom we run down face first and climb back up, if they are further up we go down backwards with a lot more control, but if someone needs stretchering from the top they will sometimes get the 'express ride' we can cover the slope on ropes in fifteen seconds at our absolute fastest!
@cambec
11 ай бұрын
need to teach some of them at the bottom how to soft catch. This they injured a few with dead stop tackles.
@jakedovey7488
11 ай бұрын
We have tried to teach them to soft catch but we only have about three hours to train them and we can't train on coopers hill so we train elsewhere which unfortunately isn't as steep, the guys who have been doing it for a while learn the art of a soft catch but the newer ones haven't learnt that yet and tend to resort to what they normally do, we try to teach them to move backwards as they catch the runner to reduce the impact but that often goes out of the window with adrenaline, we are trialling a few other options for the future!
@chrisb6117
11 ай бұрын
Would it not be safer to have something really soft for them to land in at the bottom like mattress foam?
@jakedovey7488
11 ай бұрын
No, whatever gets used needs to be able to be moved easily and the problem with mattress foam is you can't really get a good enough grip on memory foam and a spring mattress is a big no no, we have tried a net similar to those found on some ski slopes but there is no where to anchor it safely, the best method so far is a rugby team, but they are meant to sort of jog backwards when they catch the runners to minimise injuries but it is not always possible especially when you consider that you can potentially have thirty people coming down, but if they are unconscious a net is not an option, there is no great option and to be honest I'm surprised we don't have really major injuries every year, but the hospital does tend to put extra staff on in a&e and the major trauma unit for the cheese rolling!

You go through all that, then get injured by the Safety Guys at the bottom
Really good footage. Well done.
The guy in the green t-shirt copped and a hammering, then a small collision towards the end..like he needed that !! haha

Now, these are REAL athletes!😂😂
I can only imagine the disclaimer you have to sign before doing this is quite long. 😀
Risking life and limb to catch a wheel of cheese rolling down a steep hill. The most English thing I've seen this year. Excellent!
I wonder if anyone gets halfway down and just asks themselves "WTF am I doing?"
Septic tank and his strategy 😂 pure comedy.
I take my hat off to all the nurses and doctors in the local ED that day. They would have known what was about to hit them and faced it with courage and coffees.
Thought this must be in Austria or Switzerland, I am impressed that such steep hills do even exist in England. I had a good laugh, hopefully only minor injuries ocurred and all are soon well up again.

not sure if it was intended or not but " I am impressed that such steep hills do even exist in England " sent me, omg that's fucking gold.
5:37 😂😂 had me yooo, dude said "I should won it I had a good start." Bro was the reason everyone fell
All new immigrants who want too live in England 🏴 must prove they’re worth by taking part in this competition, if they do it proves they would be proud to become an English person and be welcome 🙏
I have just realized...a whole lot of people love cheese way way more than I. 🤣😂🤣

I did this in 2012 and don't even like cheese! 😅
Ending on a high note with the miserable Gloucestershire-dude and covering up a dead guy with a blanket
proud to be British and all those from abroad taking part should be adopted and given British passports.............
Green-shirt guy at 0:42 was the best tumbler by far

You can see deliberate transitions into smooth rolling
We need more of this.
It is my dream to be a part of this chaotic cheese nonsense! Next year!
As a Scotsman, I can proudly say you'd never see us do the daft things the English would go and do...
