Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I bought this at a thrift store on a whim, and it has the most beautiful chimes I've ever heard!
Antique Mantle Clock - New Haven Clock Company "Chester" model. First look, first wind and first impressions. Oh, yeah... this is also my first mechanical clock!

And that is the New Haven model "Chester" from 1929, 8-day mantel clock with raised cubist numerals, rich mahogany case and beveled convex glass. Try to say that 3x fast! 🤣🤣 This was a higher end chiming tambour style clock that originally sold for $74.00 according to Tran Du Ly's book on New Haven Clocks. It has triple barrels holding each of the springs, one for time, strike and chime. The sound is truly gorgeous. You will find these at thrift stores because the cost of a professional, just to clean and oil it, would give most people a heart palpitation. 🤣🤣

@time4clocks - Excellent intel! Glad you reached out, and I just subbed your channel. Mechanical clocks are new to me, but I felt a connection because it bridges my interest in watchmaking and woodworking. It seems that you can find clocks at a very reasonable cost, which makes it tempting as a collector/repairer! (I wish more people would thrift their Rolexes because of the high service costs!) 😁

I love the fonts, too! @Time4Clocks commented that they are 'raised cubist numerals' in the marketing for that clock. The quarter hour chimes harken back to a time (no pun…) when we didn't have clocks on our phones, microwaves, televisions, computers or VCRs... and we would welcome the reminder, without having to go through the labor of bending our arms and reading our wrist watches. You'd better be home from the playground before that 6 o'clock chime! 😂

I am no expert but a clock collector at the low price point , at least until I score a deal, and am fairly familiar with most of the mechanical movements similar to that. What I realy enjoyed was capturing on video someone first exposure to a clock like this. The joy it brings is very special. I have an affinity for clocks. I very much enjoyed the discovery aspect. I discovered mine at a very young age.

The patent date is usually a few years before the actual production date, which can run for a long time, but 1929, more or less, is the best date based on old catalogs. 😁

Thank you! Yes, I thought the date on the movement was a production mark at first, and then realized it was a list of the different patent dates. @time4clocks, thanks for dating it via catalog! That means it's going on 100 years old. Fantastic! 😁

I was working on a clock years ago that had a bell that struck on the half hour. One night it set my alarm off at 3:30, 4:30 & 5:30 am. It took me three tries to figure out what was setting off the alarm.

I picked up a Perivale mantle clock at a yard sale, and asked the seller about its history. If there was some attachment to it, I would have fixed it for free and brought it back. But the guy answered, “No, it always woke me up when I visited my grandma. I hate the f****** thing!” 🤣

A wonderful find indeed! I have never repaired a clock yet, though I wanted to give it it a try some time ago, buying a mechanical alarm clock. Their ticking is a bit too loud if they are in living spaces, this is the only thing that keeps me from purchasing one. Nevertheless it would be okay to place it somewhere in a separate room serving as a workshop and enjoy ticking when repairing watches and other clocks😊

@@marekmal328Sure😊 I repair only wristwatches, and some models are a bit louder than the rest. I absolutely love this ticking sound, especially when there are 10-12 ready watches on the shelf, all of which are fully wound up😊 As for clocks, I have a quartz clock, and its sound is quite ok.

When I brought this home, the second thing my wife said was, "where are you going to put it?" because of the sound. (The first thing she said was 'it's huge, I wasn't picture it being that big!') That was indeed a great question, and I have not come up with an answer. But it made me think back to simpler times, when the ticking was soothing and we didn't mind a chime reminding us of the passage of every quarter hour. Now, it seems like we would feel interrupted, between watching TV and whatever other technology we are engaged in at the moment.(I am particularly aware of every sound in the room when I record video, so there's no way I can put this in my office or my watchmaking area.) But wait, this clock has a silent feature, which I'm pretty sure disengages the chimes! If I can get it running, I think I have the perfect place for it, where it's OK if the ticking is hypnotically lulling... 😁

We have coyotes here. I haven't noticed them growling but we hear them yipping often at night. They used to come into the yard until I fenced the place all the way around. I had to do that to discourage the coyotes from eating our cats and thieves from stealing our fruit, we don't mind sharing if they ask nice. Before the fence was finished someone drove into the yard over my yet to me installed fencing and stripped an apricot tree. I finished the fence that day.
