I'm a grad student living alone and I love my bread machine. 1) I bring baked goods to friend gatherings, and everyone loves it so much. 2) I bake a loaf on Sunday, eat some, and freeze 2/3 of it, to have bread for sandwiches during the week without it getting hard. 3) you can add things you love to your bread to make delicious loaves that would be expensive in other places- my fave is cranberry walnut whole wheat bread. 4) it makes my apartment smell amazinggggg

I had this EXACT bread maker. I bought it at an Army Post Exchange in near Colón Panamá in 1992. I lived in the Army barracks and "cooking" was not allowed. We could use a microwave or anything without an exposed heating element. This machine technically didn't violate the rules and I absolutely LOVED torturing my neighbors with the smell of freshly baking bread. The machine was actually quite expensive, so buying a working unit for just over $10 is a great find! I lugged this hulking machine around for a while, but then when I got out of the military and had an actual kitchen, it was no longer necessary. I learned to make bread the old fashioned way. I donated my machine to a thrift store (in Monterey), and it absolutely still worked. I wonder if it's the same one!

It has brought so many fond memories with it. I hadn't used it in quite a while so after watching this video, I went and got it off my appliance shelf in the garage and baked a loaf of bread. Wasn't sure if it would work for not, but IT STILL WORKED AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!! I am still in shock as I eat my beautiful buttered slice. Thanks for this walk down memory lane. I think a lot of times people can move out of state which can be very costly so just liquidate or donate most of their stuff....get them as gifts...are impulse buyers, and/or just buy things and rarely use them or think they’re gonna use it a lot and never do (that’s why you often find things like slow cookers, bread makers, and other unnecessary small appliances)...so then just donate it to a thrift shop. That’s why when I need or wanna try a new appliance I almost never bother with buying it in store....(unless it’s something I can’t live without/ need fast or find on a good clearance or sale) for example I’d like an instant pot....but just a matter of time before I snag an instant pot at a yard sale or thrift shop for like 5-10$ lol....so why spend 5-20x more for it new?? I have a high end shark vacuum and an identical backup for it that I purchased one for 10$ and one for 3$ both at garage sales and both in perfect working condition. They retail for about 200$ each. The 3$ one the woman who sold it to me genuinely thought something was wrong with it and told me as much (but I figured for 3$, it was worth keeping around for parts for my other one, if needed) ....but upon taking it home and inspecting it closer, it became clear that she just let so much of her long hair ball up and it just blocked the pipe going into the canister.....(like if you have super long hair and shed a lot, no duh you’re gonna have to put a little more effort into maintaining your vacuum)...it works flawlessly after removing the blockage. The types of yard sales you should never miss out on though are church sales, storage facility sales, and sales in housing community clubhouses. When the item doesn’t belong to the person making the prices, especially when the money isn’t going into *their* pockets, it’s the best situation because they’re more apt to just get rid of it, have less of an incentive to price higher, and often don’t know how much the item is worth or what it was originally purchased for, so are liable to price some items for dirt cheap. Cannot tell you how many expensive items I’ve found super cheap like this.

I looooooooooooooooove my "vintage" (circa 1995) bread machine! Admittedly it's not an zojirushi, but I found the most awesome aspect of it is using the dough setting: toss in all the ingredients and then you can pull out the finished dough and then you can turn it into doughnuts, braided challah, proper "bread shaped" bread (as opposed to the common bread machine brick), homemade soft pretzels, cinnamon buns, etc etc etc. Seriously, the options are endless once you've learned the machine's individual quirks! :D

Honestly, this brings back so many wonderful memories! I loved making bread! I had a friend who was a Realtor. She would take her bread machine with her when she had an Open House at a house she was showing. She'd make garlic bread or cinnamon raisin bread. The house would smell heavenly by the time people turned up to see the house. She swore that the bread sold the house!

I have a Zoe (as we affectionately call it), too! Love it. I used to work for a health food store that sold wheat berries and other things. Their whole mission was to teach people how to grind their own flour to make all their own baked goods. The health benefits are RIDICULOUS. Even my gluten sensitive hubby can eat stuff I make with the freshly ground wheat. The Zoe is the only bread maker on the market that is tough enough to handle the fresh ground flour. 😉 Edit: my husband isn't a celiac, so he can have gluten, it just makes him feel crappy (pun intended).

Bread makers are a great thing... I used one my family has had for ages to make some buttermilk bread after I made some home-made butter. Also, wrapping the bread after doesn't effect the crust much if you let it cool first, which I highly recommend. It always heats really well later too, becoming warm and chewy again. That said... whenever we make a loaf in our bread machine it vanishes within a day.

The cinnamon bread was delicious. Mom bought it and faithfully used it, rarely buying storemade bread. She even made the best strawberry and blueberry jam in it. Loved it! When she passed, I inherited it and used it and found that the motor wasn't turning the paddle as good anymore. I donated it to the Thrift Store at our Church and got a new Zojirushi (the virtuoso) to replace it. The breadmaker was sold that same day! I've had my new one for about two years now and love it! I love my breadmaker but here are my gripes about breadmakers. The odd loaf size and shape. Make them so they can make normal size and shape loafs already. The hole in the bottom makes it hard to get a loaf out sometimes and leaves a hole in the loaf. There is a breadmaker out now that has a paddle that folds down so this isnt an issue but they all need to do this. My last gripe is there should be a compartment that has the yeast in the top of it and the water below and when the water reaches the right temperature the yeast should drop in. Yeast activates best if added to warm water rather then just thrown in the bread maker. Our bread is only costing us 40 cents for a 2lb loaf.

I had a bread maker for years. Such a wonderful appliance. Waking up to the smell of a fresh loaf (started on a timer while we slept) was the most nurturing thing I could imagine. We used to say that a loaf cost half as much but we ate twice as much. I’d like to recommend a book - Rustic European Breads from Your Breadmaker. You make the dough in the breadmaker and then complete the loaf in the oven. This gives you a little more latitude in shaping the bread and in some of the ingredients, including the use of various starters. We made our own starter from a recipe in the book and have kept it going for more than 15 years. Now we use it without the breadmaker, having graduated to plain old non-mechanical bread making.

$12.99! What a find. Got my Zoji on eBay for considerably more, though less than half the price of a new one. Until now, didn't realize it was over 30. I love it! It still makes great bread. Just so you know, mine has *never* made a nice top crust. It's usually lopsided or concave. But the bread is so much better than store-bought, and cheap. As you said, buy flour on sale. I'd add: Yeast is the most expensive part of the recipe, so buy your *fresh* yeast in bulk. Keep a small amount in a jar at room temp and freeze the rest.

Every morning before school the older kids would start 3 loaves of bread (in the same make and model of this bread maker) before they headed off to school. Their Mom would take the cooked bread out and start a different type of bread for dinner (she'd make flavored breads with herbs and spices). They all packed lunches and could put away a lot of food... sandwich bread can be so expensive, especially in a large family). You showed how quick and easy the assembly process is. Starting multiple machines with the same ingredients, in an assembly line process was not at all difficult to do.

Emmy, a really nice, informative video! I got a Zojirushi bread maker at a thrift store and use it weekly. I don’t buy bread at the store now. I make pumpernickel a lot for Reuben sandwiches as well and I always have sourdough on the go. People buying a bread machine at a thrift store should always check that the paddle for mixing is still in it (sometimes, like mine, it has two). The mixing cup and spoon are easily interchangeable with measuring cups and spoons, but the paddles are essential. Check your yeast for best before date too. The older the yeast the less high the dough will rise.

I think I may treat myself to one this year. My absolute favorite bread I would bake was a standard white loaf with a hint of sour cream, chives, and sprinkling of cheddar cheese. Onion Cheese bread.

Hello Emmy, we have had this model of breadmaker since 1991 (it is now 2020). Two parts have required maintenance and modification. The seal in the bread pan required replacing and we found the material required is a seal made from Viton. This is a brown coloured rubber that withstands higher temperatures than the more usual black coloured rubber you see on seals. Periodically I have to dismantle the seal and remove the shaft and clean it all out. The second part that required work is the main pulley. The motor drives a large pulley directly below the pan. Over time the drive belt started to slip under the load of kneading the dough. I used PVC insulating tape to increase the diameter of the pulley to improve the grip of the (worn?) belt. Other than that, this machine is very impressive for its robustness and longevity. One tip is to wet the seal with olive oil before fitting the paddle.

Emmy I will like to see you do a comparison of your Instapot's rice cooker function to your Zojirushi rice cooker on making Japanese sticky rice.

I don't know why I was assuming the breadmaker device was going to be some tiny, toy-like contraption.

Newer ones are often smaller. Mine is about 7 years old and half that size. The countertop footprint of mine a little more than a Mr. Coffee maker.

Dee SYO the new ones are a lot smaller. I have two of them. I was given one when I was in law school by my grandma and I baked my own bread to save money.

I use my bread machine all the time, but mostly just to make dough. It lets you make shaped loaves like challah or bake in a pan so you get horizontal loaves with no hole from the paddle. You can make pizza and pasta dough too.

Awesome to see this! I'm an avid bread maker. Used to do it by hand but then RA showed up so now it's bread making machines for me. My last one (not the same brand as your) did it's job for about 15 years, I hope my new one (had it a year now) will work at least half as long (they don't make them like they used to.)

Thank you Emmy that was a really good vid. I have a bread maker that works very well I bought for £1 at a carboot market. It was brand new - never been used. I don't use it a lot because I usually buy bread when I am out and about. They can last well because there isn't a lot to go wrong with them, a control panel and element and a motor to turn the paddle.

I bought the same exact bread machine at Goodwill for $6.00, about a month ago too, and it works great. I have tried all kinds of bread recipes and they were all successful. I also am impressed with the Zojirushi brand and hope to find a rice cooker at the thrift store someday!!!

I left a comment after watching this video that I'd purchased this machine used on eBay, least expensive one on there but the best taken care of, I'm sure. Well, it arrived today and immediately got down to making a basic loaf of white bread, the first recipe in the book that came with it. It was well taken care of, though I did my own cleaning. The machine works perfectly, and the bread is aromatic and mighty darn tasty. Even better since I am in pain today and not up to baking bread. Loving it! Thank you, Emmy, for posting this video and, really, changing my life for the better on those uncomfortable days!
