Three Takeovers on Hands Free Tesla FSD 12.4.1 with My Dad

Ойын-сауық

Another Tesla FSD 12.4 1 drive with my Dad. This one had a few takeovers, mostly getting out of the parking lot.

Even if the pickup truck had his indicator on, when it moved at 9:02, there was no movement of the wheel from FSD to the right until intervention was made. That was a fail for FSD in my book.

Honestly, that truck had a signal on for a little bit, and the Tesla was driving slowly enough that I could see the truck believing you were going to let him in. It seems like something the car/FSD should have picked up. That said, I love the videos-keep them coming!

The car was driving slowly enough for the truck to enter the lane. We can see that because the car was still well behind the truck when the truck entered the lane. What happened then is that he truck driver panicked and stopped their truck in front of the car. Who can say why they panicked. Maybe they hadn't checked their blind spot before starting their merge and were then surprised to see the car there. Whatever it was, all they had to do was continue their merge at the speed they were going and they would have safely completed the manoeuvre. The Tesla was not alongside them, it was still behind them and moving slowly, so there was plenty of room to complete the merge. If they were worried about how close the Tesla was, they should have accelerated into the merge because there was plenty of room in front of them in both lanes. The truck driver should definitely not have braked.

@@covetthecamper2289 Agreed. I thought one of the advantages of FSD was anticipating and reacting to the unexpected, thus making it a better driver than the humanoid at the wheel. I also didn't see FSD react in any way. It does such a nice job of giving way to pedestrians, trucks, etc. but not in this instance when it really mattered.

@@mddell24 it's not clear that the FSD made any acknowledgement of the situation, it lead to a take over, which is the most important metric to consider. It should have highlighted the risk in red, as it does with other unexpected behaviours. The goal of FSD is to give the driver confidence, and at that moment failed. 12.4.1 has some regressions but it's a two steps forward one step back situation.

I have been using 12.3.6 for about a week, and overall it has been pretty good. During that time it missed one left-hand turn across traffic onto a road that was more of a fork than a full left-hand turn. And then drove down to the next block, which was a cul-de-sac, turned around there, and went back and got on the proper road, so a minor inconvenience. Regarding parking lots, those are the biggest issue with this version not quite knowing what to do in that kind of a location. Other than those minor limitations I have had no safety related interventions.

So thanks for the video, and the ride along, and I am currently driving on V12.3.6, and it’s definitely an improvement over V11. So I do have a recommendation that I’d like you to consider, and that is, let’s substitute the word crash over accident, because when you say accident, as opposed to a crash, you’re suggesting that somehow an accident, which is something that can spontaneously occur, that’s unforeseeable, therefore, no one is at fault, when in fact, these are at fault accidents, so-called accidents, but whether you ran into someone or someone ran into you, either you or the other party, effed up, and because of that, the crash occurred. So I think we should be very cautious using the word accident versus the word crash, because I don’t believe in accidents, and when someone is charged and hauled into court, to defend their actions up to the point where the crash occurred, the prosecutors are not going to say, oh, it was just an accident. Hell, no, they are going to say that it was negligence on the part of the accused particularly if the crash involves body injury to include death. They’re gonna call it vehicular homicide, so not an accident, and so people need to get serious about driving a motored vehicle on any street, road or highway, because the life you save, just might be your own. Cheers 🥂

The navigation map generally has the vehicle moving from top of screen to the bottom, that doesn't seem natural. Is this configurable, such that the movement is bottom to top? It would also help so that when you're turning left, the map is indicating a left direction. I note it ignored the Californian "Right on red" which isn't permitted here in Qld, but I'm guessing Tesla knows the local road rules. Good video and scenery around PV.

Boring things that FSD is already getting right in the 9s. Over two million accidents are caused by failure to use turn signals. Every car with a navigation system should add this capability. This video shows a rare slow blinker around 19 minutes. Still, this is a big deal for safety, especially when stopping for a stop sign or red light. Thousands of accidents are prevented by getting this right. This boring difference in FSD and other ADAS packages is a really big deal even before we achieve full self driving.

Is 12.4.1 the version where the highway stack is supposed to switch to version 12? Likely the worst thing about FSD the last several months at least has been how it will fly into turn lanes when it's supposed to go straight because it thinks that a new drive lane was opening up. I'm amazed that Tesla didn't prioritize fixing that in version 11 but it seemed to be fixed in version 12. Yesterday I drove outside of the main metro area where the lesser highways have many of the type of turn lanes that caused this issue before and it behaved worse than I'd ever experienced. It made FSD unusable. I gather that it's because it's still on version 11 in that scenario.

I wouldn't call '9:00" a 'takeover' in the sense it might be construed as 'Tesla's fault', which it is not. The FSD is not responsible for the self-destructive behavior of other people/vehicles. I'm glad 'WMC' was quick enough to fulfill his duty to manage the journey past an otherwise sure minor collision. I guess I'm a little in awe how he decided to bypass the transgressor immediately. I'm a sort who would have stopped completely and motioned to the errant driver to 'go ahead', not wanting to be ahead of a possible driver under the influence.

FSD can reverse. How do they implement auto-park and parallel park??? Tesla somehow is not confident that it can reverse when the parameters are less confined. Reversing outside of these two senarios is far more compex because FSD now has to define the reversing area rather than it being defined for itvby the parking bay or area to parallel park into. For example, at the beginning of the video FSD was trapped in a car park. A truck was blocking its way and a solution would have been to revers just a little bit so that it could then drive into the gap the driver left for it. Instread it froze becsuse ot had no solution since it not enable with the ability to reverse in a general case. This will obviously be solved since FSD can drive forwards so it should be able to drive backwards. I am sure Tesla has shadow mode for when the car reverses. To be honest going over my comments regarding reversing should be very easy to do if you think of the problem as just driving backwards.
