I have Venus fly traps and let them flower. Even when young. I have noticed when it is blooming, the traps aren’t as strong (don’t trap food quickly or will refuse to catch food altogether). Which makes sense as most of its energy is going towards producing the flower. Because of this, I don’t normally feed it during the blooming time. Blooming has never killed my Venus Flytraps. The blooms are super cute and are designed to be far away from the traps to not catch their pollinators, which so adorable

So useful to hear this first hand experience!! So since this video it’s been fine, it flowered (and yes growth slowed like you said) but the blooms have died off now and the plant is thriving. So I’m happy I let it run it’s course. Such an adorable plant indeed! 🥰🌱✨

This looks fab, I’ve also really struggled keeping carnivorous plants alive. They look lovely for a few months and they all get sad :( I’ve got springtails and isopods in my terrariums and they’re from Northampton Reptile Centre. They have a section on their website for bioative custodians which has a good selection. It might be worth checking if they’re suitable and would ship to you

Yes it can be so disheartening! I’m really determined to get this right now though 😂 That’s great thank you so much, I’ll definitely check them out and hopefully they can ship! I think it would transform it really to have some good bugs in there

for mold problems try isopods and springtails. generally something like this doesn't work optimally because carnivorous plants come from a variety of climates. it's not really reasonable to plant a venus flytrap together with a tropical sundew for example. venus flytraps come from the northern latitudes and actually want to go into a cold and rather dark room for the winter. they will pretty much die off during the dormant period and regrow in spring when brought back into a warmer place. so the best advice i can give is to only mix the species that want a relatively similar environment and temperature. tropical varieties are ofc perfect to keep indoors all year as long as it's warm, humid and bright enough. so i would suggest to read on each variety, where they come from and how their annual cycle looks like, if they have a dormancy period and so on.

Love love love this comment! Thank you. Its been a long time since I’ve created this and was coming to a similar conclusion myself. It’s clear which plants do well put together and which ones don’t. The mold problem eventually sorted itself out, and I do have isopods and springtails in there now. I needed stronger light, which has now led to algae problems 🤣 learning a lot and I would do it very differently today. It’s a great note to have for any project such as this, researching each beforehand will always be beneficial. Thanks again 🌱

I have grown VFTs for years and it doesn't matter if you cut flower or not. But you will want to put Saresenia and VFT to sleep next fall. they are not Tropical. Happy Gardening from Canada

Don't worry about carbon. The TDS readings from carbon in RODI water (my RODI is 2 on TDS meter) were amazingly high, over 220, thats more than general tap water by a long way

I haven't had a Venus flytrap flower but my Sarracenias (botanical species as well as hybrids) produced flower stalks during the first few months after I got them and some people also told me to cut the stalks (they were rather young plants then). Didn't do it (I really wanted to see the flowers!) and the plants were just fine, maybe their growth slowed down a little during and directly after the flowering but no decline whatsoever. They flower regularly throughout the summer for me nowadays. I keep them outside though, not sure if that makes a huge difference; there's probably a lot more light.

Thank you so much for this Linda! Totally the same as you my curiosity has stopped me from cutting the flower stalks so far anyway. The buds are just about to open for me now and the plant seems fine but time will tell. Someone else has said to increase the light levels also so I’m gonna move it to a brighter spot 🙏🏼 Thanks for all the info

Have you been able to identify either of those pitcher plants. I’m curious especially about the skinny one that you said wasn’t doing so good on the right side of the tank. I have that same kind and I can’t figure out what type it is. It has tall, thin pitchers just like yours and tiny mouths and hoods and just looks kinda like grass from a distance.

This is the problem for most. Those clip on, multiple head options really don’t push all that much. High light and constant distilled/RO/rainwater .

I'm new to the carnivorous plant scene and have watered all of mine I have a question Mini greenhouse 58 cm x 40 cm Drosera seeds 100 seeds (Mix) 1.) Should we feed them manually at some point? as the domes are closed in their seedling stage to maintain humidity, leaving no access for any insects to get in. 2._Should we open the dome every couple of days for them to get new air? 3.) I have been told that boiled and then cooled water is fine for Sundews. Can anyone confirm this? 4. ) Can I water the sundew filter

I would feed them small bugs manually to help them grow faster once they get carnivorous leaves and sticky dew on them. Keep them sitting in trays of distilled water, reverse osmosis water, or rainwater only and don’t let the trays dry out. Boiling water and letting it cool does not work for carnivorous plants because it doesn’t remove the minerals from the water. It would probably remove chlorine from it but that’s not the only thing in tap water that harms your plants. I just buy jugs of distilled water from the store and collect rainwater when I can.

Hi, Ahoj I'm new to helping carnivorous plants. 1.) Is sundew from a filter jug healthy? Can anyone confirm this? 2) I was told that boiled and then cooled water is good for sundews.? Can anyone confirm this? 3) I would like to, I thought. catching rainwater. ? Can anyone confirm this? 4) I would like to, I thought. catching water from snow? Can anyone confirm this? sorry if my english is not good 🙁

Sundews as with all carnivorous plants need either rainwater, reverse osmosis water, or distilled water. Boiling water and then cooling it does not remove the minerals and salts from it and will kill your plants in the long run. Melting snow is ok because it’s the same as rainwater. Water from the tap, bottled drinking water, and spring water all have too many minerals which the carnivorous plants roots can’t handle because they are used to growing in areas with very poor soil that has no nutrients. That is why they developed the ability to eat bugs through their leaves.
