I haven't tried a lot of the extra content in FFX-2 outside of the story is it pretty necessary to beat the game multiple times to get to this level of strength?

Not necessarily, but I think that it's the easiest option, at least in order to farm the Iron Dukes. Though, if you're able to beat the Farplane Cup, then you can farm those there, which would be way faster! ☺️

What was the grinding process to get them that strong? I'm struggling to effectively beat youth league and not sure where to farm stat boosting items aside from mdef and hp

Before starting, having a couple of Iron Dukes would be great. 🤩After capturing the three machina (Hunter, Leader, and Ranger) I equipped them with Iron Duke + Invincible (which allows max damage to exceed 9.999) and the best Garment Grid that I had. Another thing that can be done is to farm Hero Drinks from Shuyin, so that the machina gain the Critical auto-ability (if you have the Peerless Garment Grid you do not need to do this). I then started levelling the machina, that way I was able to beat most Cups. Once I unlocked the Aeon Cup I beat it to farm the Kaiser Knuckles (to raise the machina's Strength), otherwise you can farm them by beating Gippal in the Youth League Tournament. 😎One final note: if you are fighting enemies with lots of HP, you should equip two Iron Dukes instead of Iron Duke + Invincible, that way the machina are almost immortal, though the battles will last longer. 😊

@Maria Is Kaiser knuckles a rare drop for Gippal in the Youth League or do I have to do the Den of Woes? (Accidentally forgot to get sphere #4)

You have to do the Den Of Woe, as only that version of Gippal drops the Kaiser Knukles! ☺️
