“Threatened By My Second Grader”

Ойын-сауық

Faren says her 7-year-old son, Michael’s, all-day tantrums have become the main event in her home. She says Michael is aggressive, violent, and loud, and she can’t take it anymore. She says he screams, kicks, and punches people, pets, and even himself. Faren and her boyfriend, Ricky, say they spend all day trying to control Michael, and nothing calms the boy down. Michael’s father, Steven, says his son is well-behaved at his home, and it’s Faren that antagonizes their child. Faren’s stepmom, Valinda, says her grandson needs attention from his mom, and since Ricky and a new child have moved into Faren’s house, Michael is having a challenging time getting enough attention. Is there hope for Michael? 19106

Fr. Ugh, it's so disgusting and just utterly selfish. They really thought that letting practically a *stranger,* this unknown *big man* come in as a authoritarian "parent" would be ok??? Letting him move in at all!? They're literally *bullies.* Both verbally and physically abusive. They demand all too much from him. This little boy is rightfully scared af. Who wouldn't be? They also don't allow him to express himself. He have no safety. He's losing more and more love and affection, (emotional) space, his place in the home, he's losing everything while getting abused because he's scared. HOW can anyone be this selfish. What a terrible mother and arrogant "step-father". They're all letting him down. They don't care about him. He's become a burden to them, and he feels the same. He's internalizing the abuse, leaving him feeling like nothing. No self esteem, just self hatred. There's no wonder why he acts like he does. I mean, who wouldn't?

Yep. I just walk away from people like this. If you try to help they turn on you and drag you down. And you can’t warn them of the train you see headed for them because they know it all. All you can do is call someone to help the kids and let these people burn themselves up.

That is something we are working on now (building back trust, and relationships)... or should I say I? My sister my twin sister is now dead (March 3rd), and she endured nothing but heartbreak as a child, and as a teenager, an adult- no support, no help. The father is also immature and lazy, but at least he shows genuine compassion for the child. Most people love the idea of being a parent, but a large percentage don't understand how much work it takes to raise healthy adults. They don't understand the vast amount of emotional labor that raising children requires. And because the cycle is so easily repeated, you have generational dysfunction that can result in a near continuous loop. As a society we need to educate people to these realities. We also need to normalize being childfree. Not everyone is equipped to raise children.

I’m a nanny and one of the kids I watch is a boy about his age that gets himself worked up easily over minor things. Instead of yelling at him to stop, I just sit down next to him and rub his back. I calmly and WARMLY instruct him to breathe. I reinforce that everything will be okay. I help regulate his emotions when he isn’t able to do it himself. Once he calms down, I give him a hug and he gets up and plays. *THAT’S* how you handle an emotional child! You don’t antagonize or insult them! You don’t intimidate them! I’m not saying don’t punish him if he does something wrong; just make sure he knows that you’re on his side and that you want the best for him. I’m just so upset watching this! *Edit* Okay, please stop “diagnosing” the boy I watch. I have my degree in psychology and see absolutely nothing warranting professional help. He is a happy, healthy little boy who occasionally overreacts to things that upset him. Not every crying spell in a CHILD means that there is something more insidious lying in wait!

THANK YOU!! I have horrible anxiety and PTSD and my parents are horrible at deescalating. I remember being backed into the corner more than a few times growing up. As a nanny I always tried to be sensitive to the needs of each child. I watched autistic children, children with anxiety, and children dealing with trans issues and each required their own level of delicacy and finesse. Ultimately it’s about understanding the unique needs of each child and responding to them in kind. It also takes a lot of empathy, and if you don’t have that you have nothing.

That poor child! I hope his parents (and mom’s boyfriend) get the parenting help that they need because what they are doing now is abusive. I have a 7 year old boy with Autism and I understand how difficult it is to deal with a child’s meltdown. Yelling, hitting or screaming adds more fuel to the fire, making a meltdown more intense. I calm my son by sitting on the floor with him, I wrap my arms around him and we rock together. I’ve done this with him since he was a toddler and it works amazingly. I can’t even imagine if I stood over him, bullied and yelled insults at him. Parenting with love is so important for a child’s emotional well being.
