Threading the Juki 1508, Adjusting the Double Tensioner and Filling a Bobbin

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I show two methods of Threading depending on thread size and I show the proper thread path when loading a bobbin.
I also discuss how I like to adjust the double tension mechanism and why.

    Well, that cleared something up for me! I knew I could increase tension by increasing the wraps at the multi-hole guide, but I didn't really know WHY I might do that - to increase tension without putting all of the tension in one spot. Thanks for the informative video!

    I love this kind of video. The 1508 is similar to my 1541 except the tension system. I also use that same needle threader. Now that you show that the thread must click into the metal disk part after the double tensioner, mine does no seem to do that, and that may be why I get so much inconsistent stitching. I'm constantly fiddling with the bobbin tension, when I should be troubleshooting that metal disk setup. Sorry, I dont know what it is called. Thanks for the educational videos. I always use them for reference and tell others to look you up when they have service questions.

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    Great! And Thanks for the references. That is a take up spring assembly. It keeps just a touch of tension on the thread as the needle descends and pierces the fabric. This tension keeps any slack thread from getting accidentally caught by the point of the needle.

    Good video. It seems like a good advancement for all machines would be to use those small off the shelf spools of thread instead of bobbins. There is no reason those small spools couldn't be used instead of those tiny bobbins.

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    7 жыл бұрын

    Actually there is a reason and that has to do with how a sewing machine makes a stitch often a couple thousand times a minute or more. You see the thread has to be pulled all the way down through the material and completely around that bobbin. So that is why they tend to make the hook and bobbin smaller. Actually the bobbins on this machine are quite and relatively large. To get a larger bobbin you would have to go to say a 441 clone like the Cobra or Cowboy leather stitchers.

    Great explanation of how the tension disks affect the thread. If you have advice as to how to avoid thread bunching/breaking on this machine I would love to see it. I can't get my NEW machine to sew over two layers of leather without the thread breaking. I know this should be no problem, since I did it regularly with my LU 563 and this machine worked fine at the shop when I bought it. Thank you! #69 thread / 22 needle / 1/8" pliable leather

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Bunching? If the thread is making a rats nest on the bottom of the material then your tension should be tightened. It is probably a simple adjustment so take heart, you will get it.

    I don't know but a guess would be somewhere around Tex 69. Try the way you prefer and see if you get good results, if you do then it is right. Ha ha. I have a speed reducer on a 1508 but not on the 1541 so I have experience with both ways. The speed reducer is nice for small or intricate work where every stitch counts. Sewing on the one without the speed reducer is really good for upholstery type sewing. Both have servo motors. First I would recommend a Servo motor, you can always add the speed reducer later if you want.

    Great video! I was the guy that asked you about thread tension on the 1508 in one of your other videos. I've had good success getting the thread tension right via the top thread, but I still wonder how to set the bottom correctly as an initial setup. I guess it's a case of just reading the sewing, too loose all over, gathering, top to loose and I get a 'line' on the bottom stitch or top to tight and I get a 'line' on the top stitch right?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    Yes I remember, your question was the seed for this video. Thanks. Set your bottom tension where it feels right when you pull it by hand. Once your bottom is set, leave it alone and do all adjustments on the top. This will work for 99 percent of your projects. Probably.

    Sorry Shueysstuff, I accidentally deleted your last comment. To answer your question, Yes, I would like to do a 1508 timing video, I am not sure just when I will get to it though. Stay tuned!

    Hey Alexander. I'm still keen to see a video on how to set up the timing on a 1508, so keep it in mind if and when the opportunity for you comes up. Thanks mate!

    Just bought a new 1508 and its been in the repair shop longer than its been in my shop. Jammed within seconds when I sewed on it the first time and after 3 trips to the repairs shop, it keeps on jamming. Now the hook looks like it shouldn't look. Anyone need a boat anchor???

    When would a guy choose this machine over say a 206RB? I'm assuming with the double tensioner it can handle larger threads, but is that the only significant difference?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    I think the first consideration would be does the guy have this kind of money. These will typically cost more but it is a classic case of you get what you pay for. These machines are very well made in Japan by a very well respected company. Top loading Big Bobbins, integrated bobbin winder, and a much improved feeding motion which handles the thicker end of materials better by entering and leaving in more vertical motion that most machines. Check out Juki's website for specifics. Is it worth the extra money? Each guy must decide for himself based on his individual situation. Have fun.

    I am really happy that you took the time to reply. That is great!!! Thank you for considering the request. I am new to JUKI and as a young entrepreneur just starting a sewing business I would really like to protect my machine by taking good care of it. After all it is my bread winner :).

    Sweet sewing machine is it your favorite?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    The answer for me is not an easy one, that is to say it is not as simple as yes or no. I have maybe a dozen machines and they are "mine" because I love them. I have had many dozens of machines but most of those have been moved on to others that will love them. I also have the similar Juki 1541 and I like them both very much but for sewing garments and what not I have a needle feed Brother that can't be beat; but that is off the point isn't it? If you are trying to decide what walking foot to get and you are considering this one then I highly recommend it. It is a great machine that is very capable and a joy to operate. I hope that somewhat answers your question. Thanks

    It helps. I bought my first sewing machine after watching one of your videos, a Singer 201 in beautiful shape and I love it. I am looking for a walking foot machine now. I think it's a harder choice because of the many very good machines to choose from both new and used. Thanks for all the videos you make the information is very helpful.
