Hey Coach, Thank you for great content. Is there any reason to do "normal" lifts when talking about transfer to sports? Normal in the sense of regular tempo reps going up and down. Extreme ISO takes care of strength in extreme week positions, overcoming ISO takes care of maximal Fiber recruitment and all of these with minimal injury risk. Quick style reps mimic the tempo of sports (aggressive deceleration and acceleration) with intention to use the right muscles for each movement (no compensations). So why do a bench press rep for example like a bodybuilder or a powerlifter when all of the above mimic the demands of sports?

What level of athlete are we talking about here? If it’s a young athlete who’s weak, probably good with just doing GPP? With the more developed athlete, already strong, a bit older I’m also curious what Austin thinks

Good Question - Are They "needed" - no you could definitely find ways around doing it without them (like you listed) and humans have for many years - are they still really effective and a great bang for your buck though - absolutely - especially if we are talking about an athlete that needs to put on size and strength - I also believe culturally there is a big importance in having your athletes do lifts that mean something to them and their culture they live in (benching for example)

Age Of Athlete Matters 100% - when they are really young I'll have some squat/hinge/press and pull without a barbell - as we get into the middle of an athletes training years (highschool/college) we will use barbell for strength/hypertrophy/cultural and bang for your buck reasons - as they get past a certain age (pros) most of it is about keeping them alive and feeling good and alot of that really just depends on what the athletes enjoys and likes - if that includes a barbell we will use it - if they have a weird idea that the barbell makes them sore or beat up typically we will find a different way to load
