Thoughts on Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Hey friends! How do you manage your stress and anxiety?
Link to the Lily Shirt: www.bonfire.com/have-a-beauti...
This is a video topic I've thought about for a few weeks now. I considered how I face and overcome my own stress. As usual, I don't profess to be an expert on this. People have asked for my thoughts on this topic, and I'm sharing this in the hopes that some people can learn from my experience and mistakes.
I discovered that most of my stress came from doubt and uncertainty. As we try new things-which we SHOULD do sometimes!-we're bound to face this.
An important factor I could have emphasized more in the video is the importance of introspection. Discovering what is causing our stress and mitigating the causes will bring us peace in the long run. Ignoring our stress can sometimes make it worse.
My philosophy on stress management comes down to 3 things:
1.) Accept that some things are out of our control and plan accordingly. Our doubt and uncertainty is almost always paired with a fear of failure. Sometimes the results we want are not the ones that happen. Rather not ignoring this possibility, allow yourself to know that it may happen and ask yourself what you will do if it does. For example, some students face stress in exam season. Nobody wants to fail their finals, but what happens if they do? After the initial onset of panic from this thought, I think our minds start to realize that it's NOT the end of the world. Acceptance of a bad outcome prepares us to adapt and overcome if it becomes reality.
2.) Adopt the things that ARE in our control into a routine. Rather than relying on bursts of motivation, translate your goals into a PROCESS. If you're stressed about your personal fitness, find a routine you can do a few times a week. The example I use in the video is about brushing teeth. Most times, we don't feel inspired to brush our teeth. If we only brushed our teeth when we're motivated, most of us would probably have poor dental health. Keep this process realistic. If you're new to fitness, don't suddenly try to exercise 2-3 hours a day. Keep a CORE to your routine that you can do no matter how busy or tired you get. Commit to the core and then do more when you're able to. Having this realistic process gives us solace because we know we're taking steps towards our goals.
3.) There are times when you may get misidentify if something is in or out of your control. Remember to be forgiving to yourself about these mistakes, and they are part of our learning process.
Hope this helps!

About the tooth brushing: where I live in Brazil usually people brush their teeth after every meal. It is not as common when eating out in social events, but if one goes to a restaurant during one's lunch break, for example, usually they'll have a toothbrush in their bag and use it when they get back at their work place. Every drugstore here has kits with foldable toothbrushes (or cases to protect "normal", full-size toothbrushes) and smaller toothpastes

For me recognising when I am stressing, helps a lot. At times I feel an overwhelming uncomfortable way as we all do. But lately I have started to just remind myself that I am stressing and and almost immediately it diminishes, not completely but just knowing what is going on in my mind or physical being, really helps for me.

I liked what you said at the end about core routines. I do pushups, 2 types of squats, 100-ups, plank and reverse plank, backward lunges, and easy version of burpees. I started with knee pushups being unable to do 1 pushup. I still can't do too many pushups(I weigh 350 lbs) but I do knee pushups too. I'm just trying exercises adding what I think is useful. Cemented the workout over a month feel good when I work out. Need to add cardio to lose body fat. I enjoy your videos you have a wealth of knowledge.

This video helped me realise there are things I tell myself are out of my control so that I can be comfortably complacent with my indulgent, leisurely lifestyle, when in reality that's untrue, and I should indeed work towards those goals. I'm gonna do that now! About the brushing teeth after every meal topic: When I was in high school I had Invisalign. These are the “invisible braces” that “work faster than regular braces” and are more expensive. It’s like a plastic retainer that’s more sturdy. I had them for five years and had to remove the two plastic pieces every time I ate, brush my teeth after each meal, rinse the pieces, then put them back on. This included at the cafeteria and when I ate at restaurants. So yeah I would bring my purse with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss inside and go to the restroom to brush after eating like Hampton says here haha. After five years of doing this habit daily, I was finally done wooo!- oh wait I have retainers now so that my teeth don’t revert their shape. For a few years I wore those retainers day and night. I’d take a purse to work with brushing essentials and brush my teeth at the break room sink. No one ever batted an eye but once a coworker once asked me, “are you brushing your teeth?” I said, “yep!” he kind of slowly nodded and said, “cool.” 😆 To this day I wear my retainers every night and still have brushing essentials in my purse just in case.

Hampton. Your videos are so wonderful, i feel the love you want to share emanating from all your videos!! Thank you for being you and sharing your soul with us all. This is an amazing message, what I heard was: 'be your own best friend!' Dont be so hard on yourself, and be kinder in mind and heart. I find talking to myself helps a lot, I tell myself things like: 'its okay if I fail, I can accept that I might fail/it won't turn out how I expect or want it to'. When it comes to inner work, I've always found just a simple acceptance of the emotions you feel is enough to release the stress/trauma associated. So accepting that you might fail, and knowing that its okay if we do, is always something I've found of benefit. I also find the stoic belief of control runs true here - 'you're only in control of yourself, your mind and reactions'. Knowing that gives me, personally, more drive to better myself and I find I am a lot happier now with life now I'm focusing on myself and how I am, rather than the external forces that I've no ability to control (the place I live, the people I interact with and how they are etc..) I believe that the world is a much nicer place when you can find peace in your own mind and heart, within, so that outside of you can reflect back to you the tranquility you feel. (Have you heard of the inside-out perspective? Its very interesting!) Thanks again Hampton, your videos always keep me on the right track. Blessings to you and your family ❤

As a side note - if you struggle to accept that you might fail, see if you can accept that your resistant to accepting that you might fail. And if you still struggle, see if you can accept the resistance, to the resistance of accepting that you may fail. Keep going that way until you find you can accept it. You'll be surprised how relieved you feel once you've worked through all those layers, simply by accepting yourself for feeling as you do 🙏🏻
