On the flip side, an open centerline like this could make the opponent feel the need to heavily commit to strikes, especially if they're not a very reactive fencer. The best thing about it is that it actually has that “fools guard” useage where if you use the heavy input at the right time, you usually end up jumping completely over an enemy’s attack and you can hit them with a really high damage counter attack.

The "Oh? You're approaching me?" stance.
Bro that’s my EXACT build. Carian knight armor set with rellanas greaves. Shame he didn’t show off the animations for that sword. So goddamn elegant.
Reminds me a little bit of a paragraph story I had written in high school, About how the character's form presented itself as flawed, only to be flawless when the time came, to have so many gaps and yet have no openings. Good memories.
Wing stance resembles one of a cavalryman on horse during passing-by attack.
"Go on, strike me with all your might" Ahh stance.

I feel like a lot of Elden ring stuff is impractical in a way that’s more explained by tarnished being stronger than average humans than them just trying to look cool. I cannot rule out that showboating is the primary reason for this though, I’m sure the black knife beam is just as effective with a quick swipe as that ridiculous flip move.

Suigintou vibes with that stance. Too bad i cant get the dlc because im too damn MONEYLESS
The equivalent of a sparrow puffing its feathers
If he can hold his arm out comfortably while being weighed down by a greatsword of all things, he's probably got the muscle to deliver a mean blow without needing to swing overhead.
I guess thats why malenia is so fucking cool. That intro cut scene always give me chills. No fancy fancy particles. Just voicelines and her menacing aura and the similar way holding her swords
Thats the count dooku "Imma bout ta whoop dat ass" stance.
It's like fighting a naked guy in dark souls lol
I am in love with your knowledge of stuff like this. It makes the game even more enjoyable knowing stuff like this was done in medieval days
I feel like it's capable of executing well-timed parries in general, which presents more potential advantages over parrying with the tip, though distance control could become a bit of a problem. On the flip side, an open centerline like this could make the opponent feel the need to heavily commit to strikes, especially if they're not a very reactive fencer. I'd need some sparring with this to know for sure, though. It also reminds me of some Italian rapier guards I've seen in the past.
‘Signature look of superior’ Gotta be my favorite book
Thank you for covering the psychological aspect. Something that a lot of people often forget about.

Hold the wing stance and spin around now we have a helicopter
That stance is absolute confidence
This was wonderful, I love seeing breakdowns like this ❤
I love this kind of content! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
considering the size of the bears in the land of shadows, i think this stance might be to increase your visual profile and scare away potential predators
This feels like the sword equivalent of saying "Oh no, go ahead. Swing at me. I *DARR YOU."*
That stance shows confidence in one's ability in combat. It provides the opponent with the length, as well as the identity of the weapon. Only a villain would do that!
Can't stress how much I love these videos
I love the guard of the fool, it works wonders in épée, it just takes everyone off guard and gives you a massive advantage.

Exposing yourself while approaching your opponent is a goddamn power move.

Soo…basically “come at me bro 👁️🫦👁️”
The stance works even better with the full armored character depicted. That much armor with that stance is a silent invitation saying, "F around and find out".
The guard of a person that either doesn't know what they're doing, or of one that has the entire exchange planned on their mind.
I love this guys break down, respects the material and critiques it honestly
“Any man above this height, dies.”
He's just standing there, menacingly.
Katana beauty in a light greatsword aesthethic, chef kiss
Reminds me of a a martial arts technique. From a guarded stance if someone comes at you, you open your arms up, take a step back so they whiff, then slap/grab their arms out of the way as you go in to strike back. With a sword you can get a pokey pokey.
The stand alone will intimidate my dog 💀
It looks cold as hell with one hand. But imagine both hands holding swords outwards.
Reminds me of that old black and white samurai movie where instead of going into the usual guard he just opens his arms wide and stares at his opponent like "Go on I'm not afraid of death"
This was very satisfying to watch. And the history that comes with it was very interesting as well!
I am actually very interested in this type of stuff it is super intriguing to see you hit us with a full breakdown on how this type of stuff can and could actually work in mid battle its super cool to me at least 😂😅
That last point is so true I am not fighting a guy that confident lmao
He literally holds it to purposely leave himself looking as vulnerable as possible, but his own style is built to take advantage of that fact and create openings for himself, what a lad 😂❤
This is like starting a fight with someone that has cauliflower ears. Just save yourself the trouble and don't 😂
the light greatsword with the wing stance is SO fun. it might be one of my favorite weapons and playstyles in the game. I am also a big fan of the AoW: Square off. But I'm not a huge fan of straight swords, I'm more of a greatsword kinda guy. I really wish there was a greatsword equivelent to square off, or wing stance as they are really cool and fun

Apparently I have been doing the broad ward in blade and sorcery vr and didn't know it was a historical move. It's worked for me for years in fights in that game with short swords and long swords particularly and that's kinda hype.
The left arm remaining in a semi-guard position is also important, given that armor would easily withstand most slash attacks
