Victor Wooten might just be the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius. His blistering solos with Béla Fleck & The Flecktones border on the superhuman, as do his monster chops. Victor definitely knows a thing or two about what it means to play the bass.
In today’s new video we’re going to take a look at the three times that Victor went beast mode!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

To be honest, there was only one time Wooten went beast mode... He just has never gotten out of it for the last 40 years.

the very first notes (CHROMATIC) of the first extract is a quote from the opera CARMEN by Georges Bizet
You could have done a "3,000 times Victor went beast mode." I'm actually kind of surprised you didn't pick any of the times he re-tunes mid song, or when he slacked his low E to mimic a snare, then tuned back to pitch. He's an absolute monster...

Came in here to say this! Wooten is a stallion
I saw Victor with Bela back in 1991ish and was floored. during sets he was out in the audience and I asked. "How do you get that tone." He said, "come see me after the show and I'll show you." I walked up, 20something kid, and he handed me that very Fedora and then proceeded to talk to me about his power amp, what he does, etc. I was just standing there not even sure what to play... LOL. The NICEST guy, just so sweet and unassuming and after I watched him beast mode for 3 hours lol.

Joel smith is my fav bass player all time but I’ve said it for years and still stand on it today, IMO Victor is the most amazing bassplayer to ever live. I appreciate all the greats-Marcus, Jaco, Pattitucci, Jackson, Stanley, even the new cats-Mono, Haydrien, thundercat, etc. But victor was the one guy I heard goin back to early 90s who seemingly had mastered it all: Slap, tap, bebop lines, finger style funk, playing melody and bass same time, showmanship, articulation. And everything was crystal clean!!! He’s the king in my book. I think younger people tend to underappreciate him because they don’t know that EVERY bassplayer they love of the last 20 yrs took a few pages from his book to help create their own style. Victor lived beast mode.
Wonderful, I've seen Wooten live 4 times, he's one of my favorites bass players, to me outstanding and the best, as someone else said, he's from another planet.
I STILL have the VHS . . it blew my mind like nothing ever had before .
THAT Amazing Grace performance still makes me cry - such an emotional journey! ❤️
One of my heroes 😍! His "musical wisdom" that you can only be wrong by a half note...so you can easily fix it by sliding up or down a fret...was a real eye-opener!
I really missed the solo that he plays live with Dave Matthews Band, maybe not beast mode, but musical as hell!

The fodera he used in isn’t she lovely is actually another bass with the high C. In the first clip he actually used his 83’ monarch pj

I was hoping video #2 would be on this list, I watch it all the time when I had trouble sleeping. And your version had that same feel. Absolutely beautiful renditions. ♥️
One thing i always noticed about victor is, like geddy lee from rush, he was very ok with having lots of fret buzz. Some people think it sounds crappy. Others dont mind it. He definitely didnt. He liked that super low action.
Loving these videos! I also appreciate the free workbooks, they're golden

Awesome Scott and thanks for sharing!
Victor is outstanding!! He has taken bass playing and players to another level and beyond!
This was a great video - thanks Scott!
Omg that pocket in the last clip is just freaking insane. Like impossibly tight. Like I can’t comprehend it.
I never thought of putting a little creature on my headstock before. Really neat! Fantastic video!
Watched him in San Diego with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones back in 2005. Victor was just on point that night. Totally blew me away.

8:10 I thought you were going to show us that epic moment where younger Wooten smoothly-dances at the back alley!
Appreciate the vids Scott you are one the most phenomenal bassist yourself man!!
Victor is a Monk that plays bass. He is enlightened.
I saw Victor 5 or 6 years ago playing with The Mike Stern band in Sligo (Ireland) and He used the Zoom B3 pedal during His solo. He seemed to sample or hold every last note in each line he played, so when he came to finish his solo, He stopped playing, but the effect played all the last notes he had saved in a perfect sequence of notes running in semitones right up from the root note up to the top root note of the octave. Absolutely amazing. Would love to witness that again. Hope my rough description made some sense.
I remember VHS and Beta and....Thanks Scott. I really enjoyed the glimpse in these Victor clips.
Victor is ALWAYS in Beast Mode. Dude is incredible.
So much like this, so good episode!
Really diggin your vids man - Im starting the bass late at 45.....but have been playing keys and writing music since i was a kid....So helpfull watching your vids and especially love the interview with Victor Wooten. Thanks for all your musicality and welcoming nature !!
Scott could spend a whole day on Victor's skill and gift. I just don't understand the people and musicians who say they don't like his talents..simply incredible.
I love this new concept of breaking down songs of bassist!
You deserve much more views!!
Good Stuff Scott
Great video, I discovered Victor Wooten watching this video of isn’t she lovely and I’m still amazed by this performance
Victor is ALWAYS on Beast Mode!! lol great vid
Victor is ruthless on a bass!! 👍
Victor Wooten the GOAT of bass
Bass Day 2001 when he detuned and then slowly retuned live will forever be one of the most beast mode things I've ever seen any musician do ever
Also his solo was so melodic and sounded great so that the kids who are listening can appreciate too. Let's mention that he has a phycological approach to his audience. That's one part that makes him a great musician.
Just 3 times...... stunning player. 👍
What 😳 That is some Serious Bass right there! Victor you BEAST! 😎😎😎👊👊👊 Thank you SBL ❤🙏
I would like to nominate the grossly underrated Andy Rourke of The Smiths for a beast mode episode. Truly an innovator of indie genre bass playing. Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, Unlovable, This Charming Man, I Know It’s Over, Barbarism Begins at Home... his catalogue of masterpiece performances is almost endless.
Nice dokumentasi Bror
Geezus h that last clip - insane.
I saw him back in the day when he was with the Flecktones. That was one of those "life-changing" moments in terms of how I looked at bass guitar.
i have deep admiration for the musician and man that victor is......his attitude is to be creative be patient and be yourself.
Just WOW!
Hey Scott, just a minor correction on the bass Vic is using. One bass in the first clip was tuned E A D G with EMG P.J. bass pickups. But this bass is the twin sister of the other with Jazz bass EMG pickups turned a forth up to A D G C. Just thought I'd point that out for some who may be wondering why Vic is playing in the same fret key of a regular tuned bass but sounds totally out of key for a regular tuned 4 string bass. That's why this bass sounds like a 6 string bass with such higher register tuning. Great content Scott. Play on.
Not only do I remember VHS tapes, Beta ones too. But I saw Victor playing with the Flecktones that year.
Victor Wooten is just insane!
That first lick is a quote of the aria from Bizet’s Carmen ‘Habanera’ (or ‘L’amour est un oiseau rebelle’). Sick.
HE IS A BEAST!!!!
Got one for you. Yesterday. ALL EVENING been trying to get this midi sync working right. No succes. Today I wanted to try whether it could be the connection with the interface. Like the plug didn't seemed to go in far enough so I literally just filed some of the rubber off. Works. FFS Like these focusrites they have this little dip where the midi plug goes right lol. Well it works, most importantly
Vic is such a nice guy I've seen the Flecktones several times and I have a signed copy of the Music Lesson and I've been hanging with him and Steve Bailey weekly through Berkeley Bass Department zoom webinars. But I really want to know why Claypool hardly ever gets any love.
He played a version of The Lesson at a high school jazz band concert here. Live looping the students in the band first and then rippin it!
His solo on bass extremes vhs on the song Stan the Man blew my mind when I got it
I thought his Bass Extremes solo from A Chick from Corea was going to feature. That solo is immense. Gotta love Vic!
He's a monster, A MONSTER!
The opening notes from that first lick were borrowed from Carmen "l'amour est enfant de bohème..."

I swear I remember watching a vhs tape, back in 2001, of Victor playing Flight of the Bumblebee. While he was playing he started taking his bass out of tune and then back into tune right at the end of the song. It was amazing!

What about shredding Cliff Burton is a God at shredding on a bass people who first listened to anesthesia pulling teeth thought that was hammett shredding on guitar but it was Cliff shredding on bass
I know that best bassist ever is a slippery argument to get into. However he's definitely one of the best, and he's definitely just one of the sweetest people. And he uses his amazing funky Super Powers for good. More Love!!

VIctor Wooten is my favo. bass player! beside playing like an badArs is so damn humble aswell
First ten seconds: victor wooten was born. END SCENE. CUT! LMAO
Wooten is hands down the most influential human in my life when it comes to my relationship with playing music. I started studying wooten around 2005.
Victor IS beast mode!
Victor has went beast mode far more than 3 times. He is always been a beast.
I want to learn that slap but straight after the first riff you played!
That Stevie Wonder thing is so tasteful man. The timing is amazing.
Of all the many reasons to admire Wooten's playing and pure skill, one of the things I am most envious of is how simple he makes it look. His face betrays just exactly how complicated the line is. I personally look like I'm passing a kidney stone when playing a difficult bass line, but nope not him. Wooten looks like he's thinking of soft fuzzy puppies and skittles rainbows. Some men just have it all.
Sooooo much talent, and yet one of the most humble men I've met. What a great guy
My ear detects that Victor might have been inspired by Bizet's Carmen Habanera 1:24 - 1:27 Great riff!
I have seen him a couple of times in concert and still cannot figure out how he is bending the harmonic notes. palm mute, harmonic and bend with finger, I thought i saw a tremelo bar, or just plain magic!!!! I should have asked after the concert. What a cool guy too!
Was there any time when victor hasn't gone beast mode? I mean... 😂😂😂 That guy picks up a Bass and boom!!!! 💥💥💥💥💥💥🤯🤯🤯 “beast things" happen! 😂😂 Victor is just amazing!!!!
I own this VHS!
Someone: Vick, you can't play Carmen to open your jazz solo. Victor: Watch me.
Got Damn... Wooohoo Wotten
The was Great
Victor invented his own realms of POCKET and Musicality - Pfeuuhhh
My only question. How did you narrow it down to three? The man is the king of beat world.
Pino palladino!!!

Anyone who got reminded of Carmen (Bizet) by the first lick-splenation, or is it just nerdy old me?! ;-P ;-) Great video though! I love all the things coming from SBL!

That opening chromatic run is a direct quote from Bizet’s Carmon: ‘That’s Love’;-)
