Why do scales sound $#@& when YOU use them?

When I first started playing bass, I was super focused on practicing scales. I got to the point where I could play them pretty fast, but I always felt like something was missing.
The problem was that I’d learnt them in a fairly boring and predictable way, which was totally disconnected to any other aspect of music.
But scales are AWESOME if you approach them in the right way.
In today’s new video I’m going to show you some actionable exercises that you can start using right away to make your own practice more musical.
And if that sounds crazy, you’re right, it is - but they work… and it’s easy. And pretty soon, you’ll be able to reach for ‘that note in your head’ a lot faster.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Yeah this shit really helped me A LOT. I have been having what is basically a mental breakdown every time I am supposed to take a solo. I am so damn happy he tied it all together like this. Terrible music KZread channels always make clickbait vids about "suck at soloing? DO THIS ONE THING", and then they just show you some average dumb ass shit like a single box shape for the Pentatonic scale. But this one ACTUALLY explains shit. Hell yeah.

The idea of ascending and descending arpeggios within a given key, ascending or descending through the scale, for example, playing up the one arpeggio, back down the two arpeggio, up three, down the four, and so on and so on, is something that Jaco used when he was learning to play the bass. Not just to learn the arpeggios, but more importantly, to learn to play something more musical, more applicable, to actually playing music with other people. Playing something that he could move in and out of just as you're doing here, to create exercises for practice, and music for songwriting, improvisation, playing with other musicians and having something to play that is actually musical, and not just correct theory, to play. it's the difference of being invited to a party, and saying, "I will bring some food for the party," and you can show up with a can of beans, a can of peas, and a bag of carrots, and while those are all good foods, to show up with a seven-layer taco salad and blue corn tortilla chips, four kinds of cheesecake, and a roast that had been on your barbecue, slow smoking for the last 13 hours and brought over at the perfect post-rest temperature, are two very different things. in both situations you are bringing food to the party, but at which party would you rather be? Do you want to be the guy showing up to the jam session with cans of ho-hum? Or, do you want to be the guy showing up to the jam session with all kinds of tasty, creative, inspiring, and satisfying flavors, and even textures, that are enjoyable throughout, a great addition to every part of that party, and leaves them wanting more? Yeah.

Hey Scott, love your stuff. Something I'm interested in is creating bass lines that drive a song. I'm ok with improvised fills or solos, but when trying to create a line that is repeated (like driving a verse or chorus) it feels robotic. A couple examples of what I'm talking about would be songs like: "Running Away" by Friendly Fires - or - "Jenny Was A Friend of Mine" by The Killers Both have driving bass lines for the verses and it's a struggle to not sound bad when trying to come up with something like that. Thanks!

HellYeah! I need more of those! More leaks, more passages, more about styles explanations. Everything what stays behind learning stuff we are said to be learned!
