I met Fred Rogers once, as a child. There is something about that man that you could instantly feel was absolutely warm and wholesome, without having to say a word. Call it what you want - an aura, his spirit, whatever. If Thor existed, I have no doubt Mr. Rogers would be able to lift that hammer, and at the same time, prevent Ragnarok by getting the Asgardians to open up about their feelings, and realize that fate is what we make of it, not what someone else says might happen.

@@ethanemerson4862Fred Rogers was truly on another level. The sheer content of the man's humanity seems to reach nearly unbelievable proportions. This is evidenced by the stolen car incident: One morning, Fred awoke to find that his car had been stolen. Afterwards, the incident was widely broadcast by the media of the day(TV, newspaper, magazines, etc.). When the thieves realized that they had taken Mr. Rogers car, he awoke the following morning to find that the car had been returned, along with a letter of apology and a full tank of gas. Kings, Emperors, and Presidents have never held such power. What's more, he achieved said power by the exertion of humanity and kindness. I truly feel that the World will never again see his like, and we are so much the less for it.

Pretty much everyone who met him, no matter how they described him, always came back to one particular word that I think is as important as everything else: Genuine. Wholesome, warm, compassionate, all that yes, but foremost in all things *genuine*. This was not a person who had to fake a smile, or pretend to care, or act like he was listening. This is a person who, when he asked you how your day was going, *actually cared about your answer*. He is on record having said words to the effect of: "Never fake it. Kids can spot a phony from a mile away." Even media parodying Mr Rogers can only seem to put a lampshade on how unreasonably genuine and wholesome he was. With anyone else, there'd be a wink and a nod to some underlying subtext or off-screen scandal or *anything* at all... but nope. He's exactly as he appears to be, and *that's the joke*. In a world full of irony and cringe, of emotional distance and 'coolness' making it look like you don't care or put in effort, we must never forget that it is possible to be true to yourself and care about others in a truly genuine way. I wish we would all strive to be the kinds of people Mr Rogers believed we were capable of being.

So, what are you going to do about that? Are you going to allow "the world " to dictate who you are? No. This is what I want you to do. Today. Everyday. Look yourself in the mirror and say, " I'm special. There's only one like you in the wonderful world. I like you. And today, I'm going to TRY to be more like the person Mr. Rogers was; kinder, patient, tolerant, and true to myself."

You need to be patient with those who have a hard time with those things, and not baby those who have an easy time with it I wish more people were commenting things about the quote less about the comic itself because I feel like that’s an important and wise thing to know that even those who recognize it as true rarely actually follow it
