Thor-Guard Lightning Siren Activation - Villa Park, IL

Ойын-сауық

So today, I noticed the local NWS was calling for severe thunderstorms, so I decided to go try and film a Thor Guard for the second time (the first time I was in Elk Grove Village, the siren failed and the storm turned into a microburst). I was expecting this to be very loud from hearing about others seeing these go off unexpectedly, but it actually wasn't very loud at all. I'd say about as loud as my Vixen VXS-1050AR siren, which is about 85 dBs at 100 feet. I still was very happy to finally see a Thor-Guard go off up close! Enjoy!

    The airport I work at used to have one of these things but they replaced it with 3 Federal Signal on various ends of the airfield. The sirens have multiple purposes. The most frequent use of it is lightning, it plays the Hi-Lo tone and has a voice announcement from airside ops. It is also used for various PA announcements. In the summer it reminds us to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

    Live next to an airport, so we have them EVERYWHERE! in every metro park, along the fence with the airport, at the airport, everywhere! And every time there is a thunderstorm (and it always moves from the southeast to the northwest) the planes have to reroute and use the other runway, they fly RIGHT OVER MY HOUSE! and these alarms are going off with giant jets flying over my house and it drives me crazy! But it's still way better than living next to a rail shipping yard

    I would estimate this at around 85-90 dBs from 100 feet, as my mini siren I have is the same volume this is from about the same distance, so around 85 dBs at 100 feet.

  • @SirenDude1003

    @SirenDude1003

    Tarik Sahin - at 50 feet it would be about 95 dBs. Sound travels logarithmically, meaning if it were (example) 130 dBs at 100 feet, it would be 120 dBs at 200 feet, 110 dBs at 400 feet, 100 dBs at 800 feet, etc.

    First off Thor Guards detect when lightning is possible, so they can detect the extremely dangerous “bolt out of the blue” (additionally if a storm is just becoming capable of producing lightning it will alert you before the first strike), plus sometimes there could be a lot of noise or rain hides the flash.
