Thor-Guard Lightning Siren Activation - Villa Park, IL
Ойын-сауық
So today, I noticed the local NWS was calling for severe thunderstorms, so I decided to go try and film a Thor Guard for the second time (the first time I was in Elk Grove Village, the siren failed and the storm turned into a microburst). I was expecting this to be very loud from hearing about others seeing these go off unexpectedly, but it actually wasn't very loud at all. I'd say about as loud as my Vixen VXS-1050AR siren, which is about 85 dBs at 100 feet. I still was very happy to finally see a Thor-Guard go off up close! Enjoy!

@@TheJakeman789 not too much you can do when a storm is rolling in and you happen to be outside for a game or something. these can predict lighting that can soon touch the area so people get out. if anything common sense is only useful if you know what a siren means

Yeah it is
The airport I work at used to have one of these things but they replaced it with 3 Federal Signal on various ends of the airfield. The sirens have multiple purposes. The most frequent use of it is lightning, it plays the Hi-Lo tone and has a voice announcement from airside ops. It is also used for various PA announcements. In the summer it reminds us to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

it does hi-lo and voice? maybe a modulator.
I just realized why they named it that, cause Thor is a god of lightning and thunder, and the siren protects people from lightning!

Nostalgia, probably one of the first Thor Guard videos ever
An awesome siren!

Awesome! 👍👍
When I lived in Franklin TN, my apartment was near a golf course that had one of these, and it would sound before every thunderstorm. It's a neat setup, and it was reliable.
Use to live by a golf course. Would hear these all the time during the summer
I always here ts ngl I love the sound of it from far away

Yea, we got hit by a squall line (with a second one coming), and the first line quickly diminished once it went over the lake, and the second one is about to hit right now, but doesn't look to be too bad.

I work for a fertilizer distributor that specializes in golf course products. I happened to be delivering to one of the country clubs we serve during a storm, and their Thor Guard caught me _off_ guard, as it went off. Very eerie sounding, but oh boy are they useful!

How nice is it to have this at the park and the 🏫yard
Thats amazing timing or you just edited it. Either way it is like a proper siren test video. Hey! Speaking of siren tests, you should see if you can find a thor guard being tested!(yes there is a setting for testing on L75 siren boxes like the one for this siren head witch is an older model using a older box and controller)
If you’re at the pool and this goes off, the pool switches from playground to pandemonium.

I live in Palm Beach County and that siren is right by my house and i hear it everytime when it goes off the siren is literally down the street from my house its actually interesting 😂
When I first heard it that siren, thought it was a kid playing a whistle.
I work at an airport. these make me feel like we're about to get nuked. it's even worse that we're in tornado alley and from inside it sounds like a weird tornado siren
Live next to an airport, so we have them EVERYWHERE! in every metro park, along the fence with the airport, at the airport, everywhere! And every time there is a thunderstorm (and it always moves from the southeast to the northwest) the planes have to reroute and use the other runway, they fly RIGHT OVER MY HOUSE! and these alarms are going off with giant jets flying over my house and it drives me crazy! But it's still way better than living next to a rail shipping yard

How many decibels is this siren? Always wondered. I hope someone can answer this lol.
@SirenDude1003
6 жыл бұрын
I would estimate this at around 85-90 dBs from 100 feet, as my mini siren I have is the same volume this is from about the same distance, so around 85 dBs at 100 feet.

SirenDude1003 Really? It sounds way louder than that lol. I remember it went off one time at the park and it was so loud I got jumpscared really bad and was covering my ears the whole time 😂🤣. How many decibels is it at 50 feet? If you know of course.
@SirenDude1003
6 жыл бұрын
Tarik Sahin - at 50 feet it would be about 95 dBs. Sound travels logarithmically, meaning if it were (example) 130 dBs at 100 feet, it would be 120 dBs at 200 feet, 110 dBs at 400 feet, 100 dBs at 800 feet, etc.

SirenDude1003 I promise this is the last question. But what about at 10 feet? Sorry if this is annoying you.
@SirenDude1003
6 жыл бұрын
Tarik Sahin - Nah, its fine. I actually enjoy answering questions (unlike some people...). At 10 feet it would be approximately 115 dBs.
Anyone kno what tone each horn produces? I've been trying to figure it out
@SirenDude1003
5 ай бұрын
There are 6 horns and three different pitches, so two per note. The three pitches are roughly 835, 790 and 630
Why in the world doesn't that thing have a wind-up and just all the sudden blare out
I thought you were referring to Marvel's Thor and in the end I was wrong
Why does it kind of look like the siren from silent hill
Sounds more like a horn than a siren.
Sounds like a Ferrari horn
Why do places really need that? I would think seeing lightning and hearing thunder would be enough warning.
@SirenDude1003

First off Thor Guards detect when lightning is possible, so they can detect the extremely dangerous “bolt out of the blue” (additionally if a storm is just becoming capable of producing lightning it will alert you before the first strike), plus sometimes there could be a lot of noise or rain hides the flash.
