Reading Sowell’s Basic Economics is one of the most enlightening experiences I’ve ever had. It was like lights turning on.

@@TheirFinestHour I got my Bachelor's in Economics and he inspired me to do so. I read Basic Economics before taking Intermediate Microeconomics, tied with calculus for the hardest class I had ever taken, that book really helped me get through that class

So long as we have an open mind and then think critically about information and test it against our principles (Which hopefully will be like most good people based upon fairness and justice) then our opinions are valid. But, we must never stop testing our beliefs or lose sight of the ideal that our search for truth must be for truths sake, even if it is inconvenient and challenges our beliefs. If we apply this to everything then our world view will become nuanced and informed enough to instinctively see propaganda and disinformation from whatever media outlet or political entity or person and we will wonder why we never saw what seems so crystal clear now. Forget labels, forget alliances, forget prejudice or preconception or bias, our sole loyalty should be with the truth and if do this the fog and confusion will lift and we can see for miles and miles and miles in every direction and be a force for good and a better world. Just don't expect to be thanked or liked and expect to be vilified since we live in a criminal world, "If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first" John "Beware of being too rational. 1.men work more hours in general then women 2. high paying blue collar jobs are 99% men, women Choose not to do those jobs they pick social jobs IE human resources, teacher, nurse, the average is lower then say construction, oil fields, or wildland firefighting look at all of the minimum wage jobs like fast food or teller most of them are women

I'm a mexican immigrant and Dr Thomas Sowell helped me change my ideology from a big, centralized government, controlled society to that of a free market economies. Thomas Sowell is neither right wing nor left wing. He is a statistician, he evaluates results and is objective enough to point out the policies that produce opposite results that they intend to yield.

To be fair though a lot of his information lines up with what the right believes in. Mostly within personal responsibility, The right believes in it. The left does not. The only time they believe in personally responsibility is when they want to punish someone that does some that they don't like..

It won't be long before the left start trashing him for it. Just wait and see. Sowell was a major influence of Clarence Thomas, who sits on the SCOTUS bench right now... and look at how they talk about Clarence, just because of whom he was appointed to the bench by. Everyone needs nice labels and boxes they can stuff people into at their convenience. Black people going against the corporate kleptocracy that is the American "Left Wing", well, they'll never stand much of a chance once word gets out.

Dear K.B. I agree with you.I just love listening to Professor Sowell. He is a brilliant man who I look up to in awe. He always backs up his arguments with facts, and - as well as that - he's one of the most eloquent people I've ever heard speak, on any topic. I wish he would come here to Melbourne, where I live, and give some lectures. I would pay a lot to see him speak, because so much of what he talks about is just as relevant here as it is in America. @Just For commenting there’s a reason I’m defining community by color, ( I also have white members, Native American members) is because the black community is the only community that has a hive mentality, only a small percentage actually forms a informed opinion. And less will make that thought known. Because of the backlash endured by family and friends. My family was a little different, but it was usually the other then black races that would try to shut down any thing outside the narrative. Can you say that any other race ignores the real problems in their community? There’s an old Ethiopian proverb .” A illness that goes un diagnosed remains a disease.”

It should be seen as a national tragedy that this man has not been promoted so more people know who he is.

Since 1972, Sowell has published 56 books, over 70 essays, and more than 30 books reviews In 1980, he was awarded the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, where he continues his writings and work to this day. He writes on economics, history, social policy, ethnicity, and the history of ideas. He’s a brilliant man!! Listen to more of him son. 🙏❤️🤗

Once your eyes are opened they can never be shut, helps to understand why so many people are fighting so hard to keep our eyes closed.

He’s one of the most brilliant people to live in the past 100 years. But since he has the “wrong” politics he is not nearly as admired as he should be.

He's not brilliant. He's applying historical knowledge and experience in critical thinking - a skill that used to be taught in schools and universities before they started teaching what to think instead of how to think... Intelligence is not the amount of knowledge you have, it's the application of acquired knowledge and the ability to supplement it when desired or needed. Being taught how to do that was the original purpose of education, now parrot fashion repetition and dogma has replaced independent thinking, exploration, inspiration, innovation and entrepreneurship... People who used to be encouraged to think outside the box are now punished for daring to believe there's a box to think outside of....

I wouldn't go that far as to say it's on life support. Brother was just promoted in rank in the army and was moved to a new job out in Johnstown Pa about a month ago. Already been called a nigger twice. Once was while putting his son on the school bus. My nephew is harrassed almost daily. He hates it there.

@@jml-rj5re Being a white, male born into a military family tends to make one a Republican and I certainly was pretty hardcore from 1991 to about 2006 or so. But the Iraq War opened my eyes a bit. Yes, I supported both that war and Afghanistan but I noticed that the party of personal responsibility took no responsibility for the disastrous war and the mistakes leading up to getting into it in the first place. I was for a strong national defense but started understanding that paying more for our defense then the next 10 largest militaries in the world was a bit overkill (especially when most of those militaries were our allies). I favored balancing the budget but saw that we Republicans basically only complained about it when the Dems were in power. I favored shutting down illegal immigration but knew that we had to have a more comprehensive approach (Gang of 8 solution in about 2013) and then I saw how Republicans wouldn't even bring it up for a vote (because it would pass). I've come to my conclusion on why the GOP has devolved to where they are now and I think it would behoove most of us to consider why they rail against CRT or the border or transgenderism and how that helps them get what they do consistently do when they are in power.

Sowell makes some distinctions between racism & discrimination in other videos about his books. Regarding racism : since that odious characteristic lives in the mind scape we will never fully destroy it. Whereas discrimination is an action taken by individuals or groups and the effects of those actions have economic consequences that can be studied.

Thomas Sowell is one of the greatest thinkers of our time or of any time. He has written a lot of books and the education you get from him would be worth the reading time.

My dad became a teacher. Mom helped support him and some of us were born during his schooling. I'm explaining this to show how much he invested in being a teacher. After about a year of actually doing it he quit. He was not against the students (had photos of some of his class members in his wallet for years after) he just learned about the school system. He said it was more about baby sitting and teaching kids what to think instead of how to think. He felt he couldn't make a difference although I think for awhile he formed relationships with his students. Anyway, we were all homeschooled after that 😆

I'm glad you found Thomas Sowell. He's one of the greatest living Americans in my opinion. He is an essential person to dive into while you're on this journey that you've embarked on here on KZread.

Yep, and you will hardly ever hear his name muttered anywhere else because he sees through the Matrix and doesn't fit their narrative. So they try to pretend like he doesn't exist when he should be celebrated. Go back and watch some of his early discussions/debates about welfare. He predicted that it would hurt poor black neighborhoods more than help them and that is was a tool to keep them down and to get their vote. He was correct.

The wings are almost entirely decided by economic views. Being more in favor of freer markets is right wing, being more in favor of centralized planning is left wing. Social and cultural issues decide the label of "conservative" and "progressive". And positions regarding state authority on personal lives decide the label of "libertarian" and "authoritarian".

I believe it is always incredible when someone has the ability to avoid or somehow resist cognitive dissonance. You are impressive As a Marine myself the brother hood is strong but Thomas Sowell also being a Marine is the least impressive thing about him. He has been one of my hero’s for a long time. He is one of the reasons I struggled but finished my PhD. I believe I have 11 of his books. Getting into the mind of men like him is so humbling. He is so far beyond me. God has made my life a little better by having a man like him as a beacon for me. And I am a white southern boy. 😁

Been watching Thomas Sowell for about 20 years, he is always well prepared for subject interviews and has extensive insight into the topics he’s researched. He is respected for his intellect and integrity and has much wisdom to share with younger generations. Keep in mind he is not a politician he has a doctorate in economics and rely on facts to justify his position on issues.

One thing I have found about politics is that people tend to react emotionally and the politicians use that to sway people. Using logic and reason is even discouraged.

Thomas Sowell did not start out on the "right." He was a self-described Marxist in his 20's. As an aside, He was also a Marine who served during the Korean War. It's probably where he developed his courage to speak plain truths rooted in facts in the face of fierce, emotionally charged disagreement. Although he dropped out of high school he still managed, as a black man, to serve his country honorably, go to some of the most prestigious schools in the country throughout the 1950's and 1960's when the claim that there was systemic racism held more merit than it does today. He not only achieved but excelled. He is what men of all races should aspire to be like.

And regarding the other guy, he was a host on The Young Turks, a far left show that provides commentary and spin on the news. He quit the show because of the dishonest tactics being used to score wins on their political opponents, when the other hosts were knowingly and purposely misrepresenting the views and words of Sam Harris, it was too much and he left. So then he decided to start his own show, still on left wing / progressive side of politics, but he was open to talking to people with whom he disagreed with as long as he could have honest discussions. His views became more libertarian, and all the people he used to associate with moved further to the left, and is now considered a 'traitor' to the left.

Thomas Sowell is the smartest man in America. LFR Family, I applaud your open mindedness and quest for knowledge.

Your analogy of the weaponising of one Black person against another in this political context is spot on.

He's got hundreds of hours of lectures & debates available on youtube dating back to the 70's. He's a very well educated and well read intellectual.

Why are they making a big deal out of nothing? @@jayspin8093 You do understand that most "school choice" initiatives are centered around the idea that the money follows the child. That means any child can move to a better school and that it doesn't even mean they have to move to a conservative one. We spend a crapload of money on failing schools and it isn't making them better very fast (we've been doing it for decades with little change). Those who are really against school choice are educators who fear the bad school they teach at will loose money and maybe even close AND the teachers unions that want as many members as they can get since they survive off of membership dues (more teachers, even ones in the NYC rubber rooms = more dues/money). By all means though, propose doing the same thing we have been trying for the past decade and more and we can all hope it works better this time.

One of the finest minds around. A former Marine, he has a very wide range of experiences to share. His books are well done and he is a very respected fellow at the Hoover institute located on the Stanford Campus.

Hey Van… one thing that might help where Sowell is concerned: his political outlook didn’t sway his digging for facts - at one time, as a black man in the 50’s excelling at Harvard, Columbia & the U of Chicago, he was a Marxist. It was his years of digging through history and economics that helped him realize that We live in a great country with a very powerful economic system - but that societal missteps are corrupting the US’ ability to keep ascending - and we’re stuck in a bog. I love the heck out of him… as well as the late, great Walter Williams… and Larry Elder. And it’s not really because they think like me… because in fact I was left-leaning when I was exposed to Sowell… and he’s brought me around.

I'm only two minutes in and I've already hit the "like" button. You said something to the effect of, "I believe 'x' is true, but I'm open to the possibility that I might be wrong." That is such a powerful mindset to have!

When they say the “Left”, they are referring to far left ideological activism, not Democrats. Thomas Sewell is not far right or an activist, he is a conservative right of center. He is one of the smartest men I’ve ever heard speak. And I challenge anyone to oppose his facts. Truly a remarkable man.

I am a fiscal conservative who has voted for more Republicans than Democrats (shoot I voted for three Bushes for President) and I have switched to the Democrats because, well, views like yours that say Democrats are "all Marxists in one way or another" is what modern Republicanism has become. Very few Democrats want to nationalize the banking system or the car industry or the ice cream business or the clothing business or any of hundreds of other business industries. And in case you haven't figured it out yet both sides take the worst examples of the other side and repeat them ad naseum. So to many on the left Republicans are a bunch of sexist, racist, hypocritical con men that love dirty air and water because that is what their media portrays as conservative. On the flip side, you have many on the right say Democrats are a bunch of pedophilic, Marxists that hate America because of the media that they consume. You know that the characterization of white conservatives is wrong and I would hope one day you understand that it is wrong as your caricature of Democrats. I'm an American. I currently vote Democratic for many reasons and I'm pretty damn far from supporting communism/Marxism.

My sister was a teacher in the Florida school system. The students were so out of control, she was forced to resign after being punched in the face and threatened to be thrown out the window. This was in the 1980’s, so I can’t imagine how crazy it is to be a teacher today!

You should watch the video that turned Dave Rubin (who is gay and a democrat) into a conservative. He interviewed Larry Elder A Black conservative (only mentioned race due to the conflicting agenda of the left that only blacks are democrats), entered the room Democrat, left the room conservative. Thomas Sowell is Larry's inspiration and so was his father. Should check that one out too where he talks about his father growing up in America.

That interview was amazing. I always wondered why the black culture in America had gotten so bad compared to what it was during the MLK era. When Larry dropped fact after fact, backed up with references, my jaw dropped. Dave's face was a picture and he was amazingly honourable not to have edited it out.

Your quest for knowledge is admirable. Thomas Sowell has educated himself over a lifetime and is the most brilliant economist I have ever heard. His knowledge on world history is astounding. I love listening to him. I surmise you will find truth in your quest and that Thom was right about everything.

Thomas Sowell is, without doubt, one of the most intelligent and brilliant men I've ever heard speak. I love this man. Love from Amanda in Australia ❤️

Rubin was on the "left" and Larry Elder challenged his ideas so much so that his ideology turned toward the "right" Sowell's ideas are considered "right" thinking because they support conservative thinking, rather than new liberal thinking. It's a mad cycle and difficult to navigate all these ideologies. You're not alone and this is why I watch your videos. Open-minded, asking questions, and not taking everything these folks say at face value, very important in our polarized society.

If Thomas says something, you can be 100% sure he has "actual data" to back it up. Dr Sowell is a national treasure

Just beware of "actual data". It's almost always the case that the raw data is slanted by conscious or unconscious bias, and interpretation of that data suffers from the same. There is likely another way of looking at exactly the same data TS presents which yields a different interpretation.

While Friedman would be closer to neo-con territory, I wouldn't describe either of them as that, as both of them reject Keynesianism. Both are Chicago School economists. What policies have been disastrous? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any policy that has been proposed by either Friedman or Sowell, that has actually been enacted, unfortunately.

To understand histories in the United States you have to look into many historical narratives, and if you do your own research you will not come away with the same conclusion as ‘Thomas Sowell’. I am going to get some links to articles to help you understand what I am talking about. You don’t have to do extensive research, or read for hours to begin to recognize that ‘Thomas Sowell’ did not debunk systemic racism in the United States. You have to ask yourself why are black Americans concentrated in certain areas in the United States? Did they choose, and create their situation? Once you ask the question, and you look for answers to satisfy your questions. You being a teacher for more than 30 years, should not have taken ‘Thomas Sowell’ at face value, but you could have began a shallow research by looking up newspaper articles to see what was written decades ago, and published daily in the popular newspapers. What I will do is send you some links to articles you can read. They are quick reads, and if you are interested you can do more extensive research on your own to understand that ‘Thomas Sowell’s’ research was very limited, and very biased. I don’t think you will agree with Thomas Sowell at all after you look a little deeper into the question of systemic racism, and is it real?

Tom Sowell is one of the clearest and best researched authors I have ever read. He never goes with emotional arguments, always strives to be factual and honest. If we must assign heroes based on race, Sowell should be held up as a black hero, but he's hated most by people who insist on racial heroes. [Edit] Dave Rubin (the interviewer) came from the left-libertarian tradition, and has become more of a libertarian centrist in the last 5 years. He used to work for The Young Turks, a very progressive leftist media organization. If he complains about "the Left" a lot, it's because he felt like the American left abandoned liberalism for progressivism, social justice and socialism.

I throw myself in that same boat as Dave Rubin and Tim Pool in that I still think of myself as a liberal, but the far left has gone so absurdly crazy in the last few years that I feel a bit left behind by the left. I never thought of the right as being more tolerant than the left, but at the moment that seems to be the case. I'm hanging out with a lot of republicans lately.

@@SpockvsEgon don't take this as in anyway antagonistic as the total opposite is the case, I'm overjoyed as a right wing libertarian to see all of us come together. However I'm curious to know what specific stances make you "liberal" or "center left" because how I would define the right/left where it's a spectrum between collectivist being all the way to the left and individualist being all the way to the right(as opposed to the bizarre colloquial definition of right and left). Someone like Tim Pool who I listen to regularly almost certainly would be "right wing".

@@accuserofthebrethren9240 I support slightly higher taxes and slightly more social safety net programs than your average Republican. My parents were very poor when I was born and were briefly on welfare. I recognize that they are the exception to the rule, in that they worked hard and dug themselves above water, and that many people abuse the system. I can't in good conscience advocate for as little government intervention as most Republicans and Libertarians. Aside from that, during the Bush years, right or wrong, my perception was that the religious right was the enemy of free speech, and as I aspire to be a writer, I will fight for free speech with every fiber of my being. Now free speech is championed by conservatives. I'm sure in 20 years the pendulum will swing back the other way again. However, I was raised in the country and have shot guns as long as I can remember. Even on my most liberal day, I have always been a gun guy.

How can any group feel equal when they are told they are victims?

I think believing in systemic racism has as deleterious effect on a person as systemic racism itself. It frames you as lower than your peers and creates a victim mindset that offloads responsiblity of one's situation to outside forces outside of one's control. As a result, inaction often replaces much needed action by the individual that just compounds negative outcomes.

In the early 1980s I read Thomas Sowell's wonderful book, Ethnic America. I've been a huge fan of his ever since. He is definitely a person to learn from.

This man hits where it needs to be hit. The thing is, for me, when I hear something that touches a nerve, I am being given an opportunity for education and growth as a member of the human race. Something makes me angry then is my responsibility to figure out why. The person saying things is a messenger, not a divine one, just your subconscious telling you that this is important. 2 words Van....Begin Within. We all have demons and whether we want to believe it or not, we all have same lessons to learn. The difference is that these lessons may seem different because people are different but the purpose of lessons are the same at the core. I went thru and am still going thru my childhood trauma....took me a very long time to understand and realize that I had a big decision to make.....stay angry and stuck or accept that it happened and make myself a better version on me because of it... I chose the hard path and used that to become a better version of me.

I 100% support, and appreciate you doing your own research to discover what's true or not. I wish people would start that way to begin with, before forming these world views.

They also tend to promote socialism as some sort of antidote to what they feel are the "excesses of capitalism." They also tend to be not very informed on either subject.

Am I the only one who really got the sense that he recently experienced something that jolted him and made him question his whole "adopted" political stance/views? I feel like something recent, or maybe multiple things, really shook him to his core, and not only that, but seemingly turned his whole political world over on its' head. Im so curious of what that could have been now. A million things really so who knows?

Brother, you’re on the right road. I have long sorted both white and colored and every “race” between those who examine true uncomfortable things, and those who won’t listen for true things they don’t like. The former are the solution, the latter are the problem.

My grandparents grew up in a Chicago suburb, in the early 1900s to about 1930. They told me they never locked the front door, even when they went on vacation. All their neighbors were the same, they never locked anything. In the Summer, they had the windows open for months. Nobody had any fear of having their home broken into.

Thomas Sowell is SO good! I'm glad to see people listening. You don't have to agree with everything he sys, but anyone will learn something listening to him.

Man you are one SHARP individual. You seem to know just when to stop the roll and ask questions, and the questions you ask are exactly the parts that aren’t so clear. This helps A LOT and I definitely get more out of the materials you’re looking at.

I'll say this man, Thomas Sowell is the leading conservative intellectual of the late 1900s and now early 2000s. Conservative figures like Ben Shapiro and others would not have risen so high if it wasn't for this man. He's an economist by training and though he is not a politician his field of expertise has relevance for quite a bit of politics. There are older videos of him debating others but any recent videos are in an interview format like this one.

It's great to watch a smart man (you) listen to another smart man (Sowell) and comment, without agreeing or disagreeing, in an intelligent manner. In the current political environment this is a downright relaxing watch.

Thomas Sowell is a legend and one of the great minds of our time. He has facts to back up his conclusions and that is important. I wish more people listened to him. Especially our children. I heard he had different views in his 20s...but like most...he got more conservative as he got older

Dr. Sewell is one of the greatest intellectuals of this age. His book Basic Economics should be required reading in schools. I have fond memories of reading his columns in the newspaper as a kid because his arguments on any topic was so clearly thought out. He is one of my biggest influences. He has written dozens of books and his "thoughts on the passing scene" articles are amazing.
