I always hesitate to say a musician in any discipline is "the best" because it's so subjective, and it's not really a contest. That said, I cannot think of another drummer who approaches the technical proficiency (monumental understatement) and creativity in sonic choices and polyrhythms. Not only that, the conditioning and stamina required to do that for 30 minutes?! We're talking elite athlete level. I personally find watching this inspiring, even if it is unattainable for me personally. Forget my first sentence, Thomas Lang is the best drummer I've ever seen/heard.

I love when people comment about how TL truly is and there is always one guy, probably a drum teacher in his parent's basement somewhere, that always says that although TL is good, he or she can do it. Hilarious. You may be able to copy his licks, but very very few if anyone else can play them as clean with a real voice. That being said, don't throw your sticks away. Play as long as you enjoy it. There is always someone better. Right now there is a kid phenom getting ready to take TLs playing to the next level.

The amount that Lang has improved in the last few years-is *absolutely ASTOUNDING.* Obviously, he’s always had incredible technique, and I’ve always appreciated that aspect of his playing; But I always wished we could’ve seen his drumming in a more “melodic/musical” sense, rather than solely for his technical abilities. Although tbf, I think he was kind of “forced” into having that kind of style because that’s what he was known for. But, in the past few years, Thomas Lang has undergone a _complete transformation_ as a Drummer. He’s no longer the drummer that you just like to _WATCH_ for his _technique._ He’s become one of the drummers that you love _HEARING,_ and one that you’re always interested to know what he’ll sound like the next time you hear him. He’s developing a style that is so unique, and so fitting for him, where he looks for ways to use some of that “crazy/difficult/technical/fun” stuff from his earlier playing-But, he focuses on incorporating it into his newer, more melodic/groove oriented style. Listen to the way he morphs 11:34 into 12:04 - until it ends 12:18 ... Or the way he morphs: 12:30 - 13:29 - then transitions into 13:46 … Those kind of parts are _infinitely_ more musical than they would’ve been-if he had used them in solos from earlier in his career; they’re much more rhythmic & melodic, _and_ each part builds and builds-before it transitions into the next part; That is a HUGE factor in terms of making a drum solo-“musical”. If you just play a bunch of intricate drums parts that are not related…one after the other… It doesn’t matter how much talent it requires, or how impressive it is-from a technical perspective… If it doesn’t have melody, if it doesn’t have rhythm, and if it doesn’t have emotion… Then, it not *_”Music”_* - It’s _”just noise”._ (Imho). BUT, if you’re able to do things that are insanely difficult, while _also_ making them Muscial… THAT is when you really have something special. And it sounds like Lang has been working his ass off, on doing just that. He always seems like he truly just wants to be the best drummer he can possibly be. So, it’s great to see that his hard work and dedication is paying off. On top of all that-He’s always just seemed like a great dude. I’ve actually heard stories from a few people that have met him, and they all said he was a _super_ nice, and _super_ humble guy. So, that just makes me even more excited to see what he does in the future. _(Part of me wishes he would just start using a 4 piece kit, a single pedal, a pair of hats, a ride, and a couple crashes, because I I think that is the single best way to improve feel/groove/melody, etc… but that’s probably wishful thinking lol.)_ Either way, I have nothing but respect for this man-Both, as a Musician, and as a Person.

It makes me laugh when people say he failed the dream theatre audition , that's what it looked like on the dream theatre video , before he even did the audition he made it clear to his management and dream theatres that he didn't want to join any band as a permanent member , he did it for more exposure to another audiences , he would have been restricted in what he could play if he had joined , I'm not knocking mangini in anyway , I think he's perfect for dream theatre , for me Thomas Lang is way more than an amazing drummer , he's on a level of his own , I love how he uses his feet as hands and has all kinds of pedals hooked up to drums and other percussive instruments , I've been drumming for 34 years , when I started it was heavy metal then thrash metal and death metal that I loved playing , I progressed to a double bass kit , 5 power Tom's and 2 floor Tom's ,I had a regular hi hat clamped to my left bass drum and I also got a remote hi hat that I could position anywhere yet still have the pedal next to my main hi hat, I never thought for one minute about hooking other pedals up to drums etc etc , when I first saw Thomas playing it completely opened my eyes , I started rigging all kinds of things up with a pedal as the beater and it changed my drumming for ever , playing a regular beat with my feet and using my sticks to play percussion along side the main best is an amazing feeling .

That was the most amazing drum solo I’ve ever seen hands down! Thomas Lang is the GOAT without any doubt! No drummer can do what he does below and on top of the kit. I’ve watched this solo over and over with my jaw on the floor. Truly unbelievable…….

Well, plain and simply, if Getty and Alex wanted to do some select dates every year to play rush material, this guy would definitely be able to fill in for Neil. Many drummers could, but this guy probably would look at Neil's stuff as easy at this point. Just insanely incredible. The speed and selectivity and utilization is on par with some of the best I've ever seen. Todd S from Styx I'm sure knows and appreciates this guy.

I much prefer Todd's style. Thomas is ridiculously talented, one of the best ever, but all I ever see him do is overplay this novelty stuff. Wrap a band around him for once so I can be inspired. But that's just me I suppose. LoL

Ha ha Inspirational Exciting The answer to why we study, practice, and strive so hard… the final result is TL !!! 💪🥁👍 At 16:20 we see a very unusual moment for him (for us all) which for me was great if only for the “he’s human” factor. Thank you Thomas. You’re a true drum master and a heck of a nice guy !!!!!

Whenever we talk about drummers , we need to divide them in groups you know . Good Drummers , machine drummers , solo drummers and Alien Drummers and Thomas Lang ladies and gents belong that select and exclusive group of Alien 👽 drummers . Thomas Lang is one of those guys who made drumming a science and an art at the same time , he’s a fucking authority .
