    It's almost like he splits himself into 2 people. The independence between footwork and hands is outstanding! I mean I love Steve smith, Dave weckl, Johnny rabb, Neil Peart, buddy rich, and many others. But Thomas Langs style and skill is definitely the hardest to master! Just insane. He could out drum me with his feet never mind his hands. He was gifted a drum talent! FACT

  • @frettamohetta7326
    @frettamohetta73267 жыл бұрын

    I must say, I used to think that Thomas was just all technical ability and absolutely no groove or feel. I stand slightly corrected, his groove and feel are starting to come to form. He is a technical genius, master, he has his "Red Seal" in drumming so to speak but I always felt he lacked in the groove/feel department because he was always concerned with be so technically perfect. That has changed a bit and there was some definite feel and emotion in this solo. Well done Thomas.

    I keep coming back and watching this; so good. The best-ever drum solo for me, in light of having heard iconic solo performances from Gadd on Aja etc., to Vinnie on Joe's Garage etc., Buddy Rich's Channel One Suite et al., Steve Smith w/Vital Information & many more, is Neil Peart's YYZ solo on Exit...Stage Left. This one, Thomas, may be 2nd. It's just exciting, interesting and inspiring! Other than the bias of Neil being to me what Moon is to him, I loved Neil's smooth segue into that solo, the well-conceived composition of it, and the satisfying release back into that amazing track. Of course, it initially hit me at a time of life which I'm sure reinforces it in my mind. Like Steve Smith, I'm partial to solos within songs which don't have a "perceptible" break in the flow, but as a stand-alone solo, this performance by Thomas holds it's own against great "song solos" of others; it really shines!

    That's the mindset of someone who never becomes truly great at anything. All if the best musicians, actors, MMA fighters, athletes, and really anything. One thing they all have in common is they never feel like they can't grow or become better at their craft. Constantly feeling there's room for improvement. Always finding something they can improve, and always improving. You can realize you're great at what you do and still try to better yourself. Each day being a little bit better at something than you were the day before. That's a winning mindset. A champions mindset. Apply this to anything positive in life and you'll find success in it.

    SOOOOO Good! 4:40 is my favorite He plays triplets between his left hand and left foot one up and two down then he interprets the triplets as four 16th notes and plays in four against the three four being in the kick snare and cymbal syncopation. this type of independence is very hard plus he is moving between 4 rata toms on the left making it 6/8 on them which is also a (simon Sez) maneuver as well, This is months who knows maybe years of hard WORK! it's doable if your willing to do the work every day.

    To those "Dream Theater messed up" people: Thomas was likely never going to be in Dream Theater. He showed up for the audition because that's what you do, but I doubt he was really looking to be part of the band. Mangini was, probably Virgil Donati too, Aquiles Priester would have jumped at it, but Lang was just there to be there.

    ***** Well, you do realize that he's not playing to a backing track. He controls all parts of the song with triggers / pads while playing the drums. The genius is that it doesn't seem that difficult and that the end product is a song and not just some showy drum solo.

    Just like any musician plays an instrument, it's not a competition nor a sport. I'm a massive fan of many drumming styles and different drummers. This guy has alot of technical ability and give the guy he is due, he is a really good drummer. This solo brings something new and fresh and good on the guy for letting us hear and see his work.

    Lang's a great drummer in tonnes of ways but what gets me the most is how effortlessly he switches between his feet and his hands in linear fills. Most drummers with a good level of independence can sound like three musicians playing at once (right foot, left foot, and hands), but Lang has this ability to sound like one gigantic musician when he solos. The level of cohesion is just stunning.
