Thom Yorke performs Free In The Knowledge at the Royal Albert Hall

Ойын-сауық

Thom Yorke performs Free In The Knowledge, a song from his new side project The Smile (with Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemets' Tom Skinner) at the Royal Albert Hall, opening a very special Letters Live show.
This was Thom's first performance in front of a live audience since lockdown, and so was an extra special moment to open our return to this iconic venue.

I feel so lucky to have lived this past twenty years with Radiohead, and Thom Yorke and all the musicians that play alongside him, in my lifetime. Such beautiful music. Thom just keeps amazing me because every song he releases is better than the previous one......!! Only Thom can do it!!!

What if he has grown beyond that? Not thinking what album you like says anything about how you are as a person? AMSP is my personal favorite album of theirs. But i don't take pride in that the same way you do. I have grown.

The first time I picked up a Radiohead album. Was 1997, my 13 year old self was just smitten with this band I have discovered. Well, I’m from the states. So back then I never got the chance to see them and or Thom . Fast Forward to 2023 . 26 years into my Thom Yorke / Radiohead love affair. July 10th. I got to see the smile. And it was just about the most amazing show I’ve ever seen. I finally got to see my Hero . Thank you and what an amazing show. I’m still processing what I saw that night. All I know is I will have memory of that experience the rest of my life. I’m glad it took me til 39 to see this man. Worth every moment , day, month, year & decade waiting .

I notice that this is the first time I'm seeing Thom look so relaxed on stage with his eyes open and gazing at the audience, as if looking like he's touching peoples hearts with his gaze rather than keeping his eyes closed and making it look like he's in a different place while still on stage. I don't think I've ever seen him like that before. It's a very nice new presentation for him to be so open on stage performing like this. Also he really looks like Keanu Reeves with the long hair and beard...and a botched eye lol!

Some Neil Young and Frusciante in there... Nice and simple, straightforward. I generally enjoy Yorke's more elusive, hermetic and mysteriously dreamy lyrics, but an explicit, hopeful folksong such as this is indeed a dying breed, most needed during these dark times.
