TY is a great singer but The subtle imperfections in pitch and cracking of his voice are amazing and really make the song have the angsty emotional impact it had on me when I was growing up. Many producers today, as you say, would pitch correct these areas or tell TY to sing from the belly and open the back of his throats in the moments his voice cracks but this organicness brings life to music like this.

Omg Chris this is pure gold. I've been snging each phrase with you, trying to find the vocal posture as the track goes. Tom's such a genius and your analysis is great. Thank you so much.

What an amazing video showcasing vocal artistry! Without the music, and hearing every little breath - he sings it so perfectly imperfect. Like someone ripped out his heart and broke it into a million pieces - something we can ALL relate to. The cracks, soft tones and rasp all take us on an emotional journey - as if he was sitting next to us somewhere telling us what happened, ready to break down. If it was perfect, I don't think it would have the same impact. Probably why it's one of the most famous and covered songs out there! And jeez, Chris! You're some kind of vocal wizard/chameleon - you could sound like almost everyone! Amazing! LOL

Thanks so much for this video. I had no idea TY had so much reverb on his voice in the recording. Also interesting how his subtle delivery at the beginning is still very powerful. It makes the dynamics later in the song more interesting.

He definitely grew as a singer going into the next few records but even before this record I’ve heard demos of it and other songs like “You” and he was definitely struggling with the higher notes. You could tell it was there but it’s clearly something he worked at.

I remember covering this song and I literally busted my gut trying to sustain that high A note.

Definitely one of the great rock singers. Such a unique voice. I think I heard him once say he wished it was dirtier and grittier and not so pretty. I guess even the Thom Yorkes of the world sometimes don't like their voice :) Great analysis Chris!

Probably the only creep vocal analysis which is positive lol, every other "vocal coach" analysis is just them ragging on the creep vs the air I breathe then complaining about how thom goes off pitch at certain points

This isolated vocal track really drives home why this is such a good song. Never mind the fact that it's been overplayed the past 30 years and Radiohead and their fans pretend they don't like it (me excluded, I love it and Pablo Honey.) It's a solid ass song no matter what.

hi Chris,off topic but I recently found out about the Adele’s vocal chords surgery and after reading all of the posts like “loud doesn’t mean good it will damage you” I feel uneasy,I love her style big and lush and so many vocalists do high intense stuff,does this mean we are all doomed?...My air support is right I don’t push if i feel like a note is too high it starts “scratching my throat” BUT bet Adele knee it all and still got in trouble is it about making breaks or changing your approach?Might be an idea for a video if you don’t have one like that yet

Hey Chris off this subject to your the four roles of a guitar in a mix sneak peek via Recording rev. You record your guitars in stereo and then pan them hard left or hard right, but in lpx you're panning a stereo recorded inst. incorrectly. Just wondering why record in stereo instead of mono if you're panning them hard left or hard right, wouldn't to many guitars recorded in stereo be over kill? Just wondering cause for some people and mixer's receiving all the guitar multi-tracks in stereo can be too much. Thanks for the great vids and info. Cheers :-)

Not in stereo. It’s a mini file. Pro tools does mono to stereo on the faders for effects.

@@chrisliepe Oh, okay, so you imported those files from protools into Logic Pro X (lpx) and you're saying that even though the bass gtr is showing in mono that the gtr tracks are in mono too, even though they're showing stereo in the channel strip panned hard L and hard R? @@chrisliepe if you put your mini files from protools into LPX on an audio output mono track it would be true mono for LPX, but you put your mono track from protools on a stereo audio track in LPX, does it matter in digital recording and Logic Pro X?

FIrst of all I recommend you to have a look at kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppOrzNdyftjTns4.html . If you want to sing like this you need a proper understanding of how everything works. I mean abdominal muscles and stuff like that. You need to warm up. To make it all easier you should join Chris's vocal course. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU TO DO THIS :)

Thom's voice sound so good here. I feel like his voice fell off starting with Kid A. On the first three albums, he had such range, power, and ease. Now he always sounds strained and thin. I wonder why that is. Age? Change in technique? Production?

"the voice is always a moving target" -Chris Cornell. I think all of those factors you mentioned play into his vocal change. I still love what he does with it though for sure!

Change on musical style. It just suits the music he makes now more. He’d still have been capable of those things after Kid A. Now not so much but he’s still amazing.

Isn't his technique super natural, not contrived. It's like his posture is very relaxed and what you're pointing out is the incidental effects of emotion except the obvious changes in resonance?

How bout you analyze a talented vocalist like Anthony green, Jonny craig, Peter Collins etc?
