Damn! I was not expecting it to have support for every color possible. I was thinking maybe using the existing minecraft blocks and then using some dithering algorithms to create the illusion of more colors, like how people did for making map art. Impressive stuff!

I think being able to make text any colour is a relatively new feature, because they're used to only be 16 colours, so blocks would have been the better choice if that was still the case

yea ive done it using blocks before with a bukkit plugin and was way less laggy, but could only hit a max of 20 fps due to the tickrate. There you're limited to the color limitations that the minecraft block pallate gives you but I think using particles at the time could also use any hex code color aswell, and support only changing certain pixels if the color actually changed which will give you more performance not sure about this command block way as assuming you would need to draw each line every frame anyway.

Dang, seeing sethbling and hearing him in minecraft, the nostalgia hits hard

YES DUDE OMG! I was SO excited to see what the redstone community would do with display entities when they were announced, and they hardly got any hype! I was shocked honestly. This was so so cool, it's insane to see a screen in-game with ANY color you want, when the closest thing I'm used to is map art which is so painfully desaturated.

The fact that Simple Bomb clipped while looking through the minecraft tv is deally impressive

I love the thought of Mysticat doing a sponsor just to get "the funny walmart cookies" and nothing else!

This is such an amazing feat in terms of vanilla Minecraft! Of course Mysticat is the one to be able to pull of such a thing

This would be really interesting to combine with the Minecraft computer builds, since the displays have usually been one of their biggest limitations

there's a bit of a problem. since minecraft computers are done in FULLY vanilla minecraft (i.e. redstone or commands). this display was made using a server-side plugin. which would mean you would need the plugin to read redstone signals (or function values) before it's displayed.

@@Coppertine_ My understanding was that the plugin was just needed to grab external images from beyond Minecraft's borders, and convert them into command block commands. I could very well be wrong about that assumption, but it seems like it SHOULD be possible to replace that script with a GPU built within Minecraft to be compatible with this system.

another way to implement this on a larger scale has been explored in the video "Making videos in geometry dash", where the approach was to use large objects that match the general color of things and small objects for detail, stopping when the image is detailed enough. This may allow for a larger image/higher refresh rate rate

Its kinda funny how Sethbling is definately not surprised. (He built a working cell phone in Minecraft 8 years ago for anyone who didn't already know.) However, this project takes some of this to another level. The resolution and colour is near perfect. Its vanilla only which is crazy. All around, really truly amazing.
