there a way of being controlled but attacking... England did not do that. 1st half fine. but after 10 mins of the 2nd it was OBVIOUS England were not gonna hold out 1-0... we needed to retain the ball in the centre and we needed more threat on the counter. grealish and sancho are 2 of the best players in the world at retaining the ball, moving forward and winning fouls... neither came on till very late. rashford aside from mbappe is probably the world most dangerous solo counter attacker in Europe yet he didn't come on either. the way we sat back setup and waited and waited and let italy equalise before we made subs was asking for trouble and we got trouble

Been a good weekend, McGregor lost and England lost.... Grealish apparently doesn't track back but yet he prevented a goal in extra time.....mount is apparently a genius but was falling over in the box rather than stopping the equalizer..... the 'park the bus, play 7 at the back and cross your fingers hoping for 1 goal despite having no creativity' can help players survive relegation in league format but not in knockout football...England need a manager who doesn't say 'we're going to defend, let's see what you can do about it' but says 'we have amazing attacking talent, let's see how you stop us'....would rather see games finish 5-4 rather than 1-0

Luck is part of the game. England had the second-best squad in the tournament after France, but there is a difference between having a squad and having a team. England didn't beat Italy but Italy was only able to beat England in penalties and was losing the game for 67 minutes. So chins up England, you did well. Not enough but this is the right way to lose a tournament: you lose in some details because overall you did great.

Even Chiellini admitted that the players didn't know what to make of him when he came initially. And he proved them wrong only now but let's not pretend he didn't have his lows as well; losing to Wigan in the FA cup springs to mind as well as getting sacked by every club in Turkey, Italy and Russia before taking the job at Italy. @Gary O'Hanlon your comment just reveals how little you know about football. Playing 6/7 games at home is LESS of an advantage than the host nation gets for EVERY OTHER TOURNAMENT. If you want to talk about easy draws, look at Turkey in 2002 who only had to beat China, Japan, Senegal, and Costa Rica to reach a world cup semi final. And if you want to talk about ref decisions, look at South Korea vs Italy from 2002, where SK clearly bribed the ref. So no, you are factually wrong to say 'never has a country had the advantages England had.' Simply wrong. Maybe you should educate yourself before making more factually incorrect comments. Just a thought.

As you rightly point out after a couple of wins the media and fans are convinced England are gonna win everything and 'it's coming home' (which I also detest), one defeat later its sack the manager and pulling everything to bits. POV from Italy: At minutes 35, first half, I said to my friends "If the first half ends with this score, we (as Italy) are winning it". Now, I'm not some kind of tactical genious or more expert than other, but this was my thoughts about this: Playing at Wembley in front of something like 80k England supporter is never easy, and even more than pressure, you could feel during the approach at the game and in the first minutes a sense of "inevitabily" around an England victory. The supporter felt it, and English players felt it, and I'm pretty sure our players felt it too. And that goal only managed to increase that feeling. BUT after the first ten - very good for England - minutes, the home side stopped from impose their rythm at the game, and started, slowly but surely, to accomodate on a comfortable "let's wait for them and then counter attack". Which is fine... in any other occasion and maybe not that early in a game, but yesterday that choice only gave Italy time to warm up, to touch more and more the ball, to slowly transform the game from an emotive one to a tecnical one. And THIS Italy is second to none when it come to tecnical skills. So you ended up loosing confidence more and more and we ended up throwing that feeling of inevitabily behind our back.

England not. Such a shame for Jordan pickford too. He done a smashing job but the circles were in complete contrast to each other before the pens. Yeah, you could see what was coming. Italy started to dominate from around the half hour mark, England just let them get into their rhythm. Didn’t get tight to the ball, didn’t press with real conviction. And didn’t use the ball well when they had it. Too many optimistic forward passes, which just invited the pressure back on, and not enough controlled build-up play. Trippier and Shaw on the wings really worked for about 20 minutes. Then the Italians adapted, wrestled the game out of England’s hands, and we never responded.

Mancini wasn't mocking about with his decisions yesterday. One loose ball in the midfield during extra time, sterling broke and was bearing down on goal, Chiellini gets back frantically with a sliding tackle to clear for a corner. Right after the corner, Veratti Off, Locateli on. Ruthless, purposeful, precise. Kudos to Gareth for how well drilled England looks but he now needs to create balance by including some flair.
