This Volkswagen Karmann Ghia dubbed "the Ghiaru" was once headed towards the scrap heap. Owner Mike McConnell saved it from death row and added some Subaru power in the trunk.

    Kudos to the owner for doing all that work. The lace paintwork is awesome, I haven't seen that done in years on a car.

    I like cars that are dropped for the sport look and for better handling but this is too low. Nice work though.

    That is one of the best swapenstein ratrods I've seen in a long time, and you continued the handbuilt tradition! l hope it has better heat than stock...

    Funny you mention heat... The Subaru won't keep its cool without a heater core, so you're forced to have real deal heat, unless it's blocked from entering the cabin.

    stock height does look lame , but that's too low . an inch higher and it would still look sick , but you could drive it .

    jerry henderson i agree however his engine and transmission was raised a few incges so it doesnt scrape the oil pan everywhere

    I love the lace paint job on the roof, which gives a very 60's Bellflower kustom influence to the car. If I had one, I'd make it into a 60's Bellflower car, then stick a Subaru BRZ boxer motor out back. How did you sort the cooling out, as the new engine's water cooled?

    Miroslav Szabó He didn't, the person that started the "leaving it for dead" process is the one who ruined it. This car could have been scrapped, but his vision and passion drove him to restore it into this, a cool, unique daily driver built for no one else but himself.

    'Ruined' to some people means he didn't either leave it for them to have and do nothing with it, or didn't restore it stock. Maybe with a mighty 40 horse or something, I can just imagine the power... Perhaps some drum brakes on the front as well. Which is all the excitement you will get, trying to stop.

    +suzan sullivan there are quite a few companies that make engine swap kits. motor mounts as well as transmission conversions. basically you need a car and the subie engine and buy the kit. then just time.

    Nice ride! Always loved the lines on the Ghia, I would dump it just that. Not sure about the motor setup though. is it connected to the vw transaxle?

    A bug or Ghia is still the best car on ice and snow. Turbo or not. Get ready for a tear down of that Subaru though. Gonna need head gaskets water pump etc. How bad does that valve adjust sound now?

    first impressions: a complete butchery of possibly the most beautiful body ever created. love the paint job, but those wheels are out of place on a classic, it is way to low to the ground, and that exhaust pipe is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. if you want to rice a car, at least have the decency to do it to something like a POS civic. however your craftsmanship is way up there, and you did amazing bodywork

    I mean, the entire point of a build like this is to defy convention. I'd love to do something like this someday. But I do agree that the exhaust pipe is absurd. I bet it makes a good reference point for backing into parking spaces, though!
