This Vintage Mopar Rear Window is NOT Worth $5000 - Debunking The Barracuda Rear Back Glass Myth!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we debunk a popular Mopar myth - 1964-66 Plymouth Barracuda rear windows are NOT worth thousands of dollars! Had a couple 65 Barracuda's listed on Facebook Marketplace for a month or two and couldn't believe how many messages we got saying to SAVE THE REAR WINDOW! IT'S WORTH A FORTUNE! NO, NO IT ISN'T. OK calm down a little - was curious where this all started and we found out. Was on a totally fake reality TV car show called Desert Car Kings. The show only lasted a year and it is easy to see why. They find a 64 Barracuda and the entire episode all they talk about is how valuable the rear window is and the shop owner "will kill them if they break it." Of course the first thing they do is purposely break it. So please do us a favor, if you see a Barracuda listed online do NOT message the person saying the rear window is worth a fortune, it's NOT. OK - Tom rant off.

I scrapped a '66 Barracuda eons ago and gave the rear window to an auto wrecker. 30 years later, I purchased a '64 Barracuda missing that window. Bought my old glass back for $40. Not bad storage fee for all that time.

NEWS FLASH!!! Realty shows are all staged. I work in television and have done a bunch of them. Real life is boring for the cameras so they spice it up with "rehearsed drama". What bothers me is how these restoration shows have driven up the price of classic cars. Moreover, they've ruined the hobby, turned it into a religion of greed, speculations and flippers.

I was drawn to that episode because it was about an early Barracuda and was totaly shocked when they broke the window (not) the two most common comments I get when I,m out with my 66 are about the value of the back window and if it has the optional hemi. When I took my car apart to restore I was amazed at the weight of that window.

Thanks, Tom. I have heard that $5K rear window BS for over a decade- wondered about who started it. Having had early Barracudas for a very long time the gap between the misinformation about these cars VS the boring truth is large. Like the there being a special 'HP' drivers side exhaust manifold on the 273- nope, same poorly flowing casting # on a 2bbl or 4bbl. My "opinion" is that the big interest in the few '63 Chevy 'Fastback' Nova's, AMC Tarpon show car leading to the AMC Marlin in '65, and the soon to debut Ford Mustang, lit a fire under Chrysler to get something together quickly...for the Pony Car Youth Market.

Also with the amount of spare parts you have laying around Tom why not get it running & driving and then sell it for more? @@TireSlayer55 yep, I never thought fox body mustangs would be worth much, & I certainly never thought they would get scarce! Cash for clunkers cleared out a lot of old junkyards and a lot of the rural countryside too; I used to drive around on the backroads in one of the cars I had been working on ..maybe once a month or so. evening a month or so-just a nice cruise. I would take a notebook and write down spots where I spotted cars. I would usually see a few different spots where a car or two sat…sometimes a whole hoarde of cars would be hidden😍😅! Old Cars and antique stuff is often generational. When I was young my dads friend had a 1929 Packard gentlemen’s coupe-super 8 engine, rumble seat in the rear…it was a cream puff! He drove it in all the parades etc. in the mid 1990’s a guy approached dads friend while we were all standing in town after a parade, the guy said do you own this Packard? Yes sir I do…would you like to look it over? The man said -no, I want to buy it😐. He didn’t want to sell it of course. They went back and forth for a few minutes and the guy meant business so you couldn’t help but hear & look on😬…at one point the man said I’ll give you $110,000 for it! If you won’t take it you’re crazy- good day to you sir.. and the man stormed off! 👀 Fast forward to around 2010 and dads friend started having health issues, and they advertised his Packard… it sold for $60,000 dollars. Still just as nice-kept in climate control etc.. but all the “old men” who once owned one when they were young…were all gone or too old to bother. Now for example, the iroc Camaros, fox-mustangs, Nissan Z-cars..etc are all coming into their sweet spot-because the guys who had them cruising around when they were younger-have the money to buy their youth back 😊🙋🏻I understand it! However the muscle car era(65-74).. will never plummet and will always have a draw-it was so special that the government had to intervene and all the cars of today are still trying to capture the style that era had! When it comes to the car community, there will always be the people who want cars they never had; and those who had a car they loved but lost at some point-like an ex girlfriend 😂! That’s our market! Enjoy your day brother! 😊 Ttul

I've got a '66 Barracuda Formula S and have not one, not two, but three spare rear windows and I don't believe you, Tom. I know I'm sitting on a goldmine in the corner of the garage......... Just a matter of time, mark my words. 50, 100 years from now my great, great grandkids will cash in. On a serious note, two windows came with the car, the third window came from a new neighbor who had one in his back yard (came with the house) and he gave it to me. Yes, gave. Apparently he didn't know the goldmine he was sitting on.

It doesn't surprise me that the value of the rear window is blown out of proportion, Iv'e seen some fancy prices on the Plymouth hood emblems ( latch) as well ,there's so much BS out there in tv land. I have to say I find it quite distressing that you're considering scrapping that Barracuda body , its been around all these years, someone could want it one day , once it's gone , it's gone , people used to scrap all sorts of cars that are super desirable , and thin on the ground now. In my opinion it wouldn't be right ,keep hold of anything from that wonderful automotive era at all costs .🥺

Maybe people are confusing the Barracuda and the AMC Marlin. They have a similar body shape and similar rear window, I could see the Marlin back glass being expensive because those cars are fairly uncommon. Barracudas are cool but they aren't all that rare. Just because a piece of glass has a unique shape doesn't make it expensive by that fact alone. It's all about supply and demand...

It's a pity that they don't get the "love", they were a bit lighter and handled better than the '67 through '76 models. Trouble was, engine choice, at least if you want to stay original, was a bit limited, but given that they don't have a huge value as a collector item, I say put in something you can readily keep running, like a decently warmed-over 318 or 360, or even fiddle around, if you want to keep it a Slant Six, with some aftermarket performance stuff. Even grafting in a Super Six manifold with a plain ol' Carter BBD can work wonders to get a Dart GT or Valiant Signet to get out of its own way.

@@olikat8 Don't get me wrong. I had Four, count 'em, four A-bodies, and oh, what I'd give to have any of them back. First was a '69 Dart Swinger with a 225 Slanty and a three-speed, my first car, paid for with three years of mowing lawns and babysitting at age 16. Then, after I'd acquired a '68 Rambler wagon once the family moved to Fresno in '76, for $200 (had to get to work at KFC), I actually sold the wagon for a small profit and picked up a nice '67 Dart GT that was a one-owner car for $900. Had it for three years, it also had a 225 Six, A904 Torqueflite, A/C and power steering, nice car. Sold it before going on a Mormon mission in 1980. Picked up a '63 Dart for $250 which was decidedly a "beater", it was my "work" vehicle for cleaning buildings, I took out the back seat to better accommodate my equipment. Sold it when I got married late in '83, wifey already had a Datsun 210, I had also my Grandma's '69 Merc Monego, we just didn't need three cars with a baby on the way. In 1991, picked up a '75 Dart with a 318 that needed some TLC, drove it until wifey and I separated in '94, had to sell off the "iron" in order to pay my attorney and meet some living expenses. There were other Mopars that I wish I'd kept. Who knew.

Yeah, I just bought a ‘64 Barracuda project that actually was missing the back glass and I bought a replacement for $100; which is pretty much top dollar for that glass … but I was there … it was there … and I just wanted to grab it and forget about it! I have seen them offered for free and up for sale for $250.00 all the up to $1,500. Of course, nobody pays that much! Everybody that pulled those back windows 30-50 years ago and carefully stored them away in cool, dark places should have also pulled the windshields and stored them away, too. They all turn white around the edges! Too bad I live on the other coast because I see a bunch of parts I’d love to pick off there before it goes off for scrap! Unfortunately, where I live, people selling 64-66 Barracudas tend to labor under the impression that they own some version of a junior 440 six pack ‘Cuda and ask unrealistic money for them … because “anything MoPar is a big money car!” Why? Because they saw it on TV!
